Such restrictive rules are not what Eating Naturally is all about. We are also not about fad diets. publisher's note
Dick Benson PUBLISHER
Last summer, our family moved into a new house. This meant leaving behind our beloved vegetable garden that we worked on
for several years. It provided us with our summer supply of green beans, salad greens, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, and even a small crop of fall squash. But because we moved in June, we were too late to plant a garden in our new yard. So, we relied on our local farmers’ market for our fresh vegetables.
The seed companies have followed me to my new address, sending me all of their sales catalogs. It’s exciting to see the many new varieties of plants, and it’s even more fun to find classic heirloom varieties. Taking a year off of gardening, I’ve had time to think about what we will plant in our new garden. Less space will be devoted to green beans and cucumbers, because they are
readily available at the farmers’ market. More space will be devoted to plants such as berries, asparagus, and rhubarb, which will grow back year after year.
I’m also planning a small herb garden and some space to experiment with new plants that I have never grown before. But the most important part will be a small area that I can share with my grandchildren. I think they missed our garden last year even more than I did. Their favorite plants are the purple beans that turn green when they are cooked. They also love watching their Halloween pumpkins grow as summer comes to an end.
Gardens are a great family activity. Even if you don’t have a lot of yard space, a few containers can provide some fresh veggies all summer long.
This issue of Eating Naturally includes a feature on smoothies. Though we have included several smoothie recipes (along with many
