System Benefits

• Regenerative braking recharges batteries leading to reduced braking and engine wear.

• Parallel hybrid system means the diesel powertrain remains fully functional in the unlikely event the hybrid drive unit goes offline.

* Dependent on duty cycle, driver behavior, weight and operating conditions.

Eaton's proven hybrid electric system provides up to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy* and significantly reduces emissions while maintaining drivability. It's well suited for the daily stop-and-go duty cycles of a standard school bus. And with the addition of Eaton's unique Hill Start Assist technology, school districts have an added level of safety and security.

Frequently Asked Questions

For more Eaton Hybrid information, call 1-800-826-4357.

Q. Who else is using Eaton’s hybrid electric system?

A. There are more than 4,500 Eaton-hybrid electric pow-ered commercial trucks and buses in service today that have accumulated more than 150 million miles of clean, safe reliable service around the world with more miles being added every day. Applications include package delivery, beverage tractor, shuttle bus, city transit bus, utility truck and now Class C school buses.

Q. How much horsepower and torque does the hybrid system provide?

A. The Eaton system includes a 44 kw electric motor that provides the equivalent of 59 hp and 310 lb ft of peak torque. It is positioned in front of an industry-leading Eaton transmission so that it takes advantage of the torque and power multipli-cation from the transmis-sion gearing. Competitive systems locate the motor behind the transmission and have to use larger electric motors that con-sume more energy because they are unable to leverage the torque from the transmission.

Q. What differences might the driver notice while driving a hybrid equipped vehicle? Does the engine shut off?

A. The diesel engine will be running at all times in order to power the vehicle’s 12 volt, HVAC, air brake, and power steering systems. Even with the diesel running the driver and passengers will notice smoother, quieter vehicle accelerations because the system will launch using the electric motor whenever possible.

The driver will also notice that there is no roll back when the hybrid bus is forced to stop and re-launch on a hill. This safety feature is called Hill Start Assist (HSA).

Drivers might also feel vehicle deceleration when they remove their foot from the throttle but before they apply the service brakes. This is the regenerative braking system putting energy back into the system.

Q. What is “regenerative braking” and why is it important?

A. Regenerative braking is the “generator side” of the Hybrid system. During a stop the system converts the vehicles kinetic energy into electricity and re-uses this energy to help launch the vehicle during the next acceleration. Normally this brake energy is converted to heat and lost to the atmosphere.

Q. What is the standard warranty on the Eaton hybrid system?

A. We have the highest standard coverage in the industry – 5 years/unlimited miles.

Q. How long will the battery last?

A. The life of the hybrid battery is extremely dependent on the duty cycle. School districts should anticipate a minimum of one PEC replacement assuming an average 15 year bus life. Please contact your local dealer for the replacement battery pack cost detail.

Q. Who takes care of my training, parts and service needs?

A. Eaton has developed training materials specifi-cally for the driver, systems maintenance and First Responders. Parts and technical service support is available from your authorized dealer who is supported by the same Roadranger Field Market-ing team that supports you. The Roadranger team is over 200 people strong with the vision and mission to support all Eaton and Dana drivetrain components. Information is only a phone call (800-826-4357) or click (Roadranger.com) away!

Q. How much weight is added? Is this more or less than competitive systems?

A. The net weight added to the vehicle is 850 lbs. This is approximately 400 lbs lighter than any other competing hybrid systems.

Q. What school bus manu-facturers offer the Eaton hybrid system?

A. You can order from either IC Bus™ or Thomas Built Bus today.
