First, think about what a non-chronological report is. What does chronological mean? Is it fiction or non-fiction? Where might you read a non- chronological report? Read the example non-chronological report on sharks in your resource pack. What is the purpose? (Why is the letter being written?) Who are the audience? (Who is it written for?) What is the form? (Is it formal/informal? What type of text is it?) Now look carefully again at the example. What things do you notice about it? What features does it have? (Don’t look at the checklist yet!) Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To identify right angles. This week we are going to be learning all about angles. An angle is created when two straight lines meet. We calculate the turn you would need to make to get from one line to the other from the point at which they meet. Angles are measured in degrees. A right angle is exactly 90˚ degrees and looks like a capital L. Today we are going to find right angles around our homes. First we are going to make a right angle finder to help us. Watch today’s teacher video to see how to make a right angle finder and how to use. There is an example right angle finder with the resources at the end of this document. Activity: Create a right angle finder and use it to check the angles of objects in your home. Can you find 10 objects with at least one right angle? Can you find objects with multiple right angles? Which object has the highest number of right angles? Week 2: Science lesson Learning Objective: To understand the lifecycle of a flowering plant Today we are going to look at the life cycle of a plant. Watch the video and work through the power-point posted on dojo to learn about the different stages of a plant’s life cycle. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zgqyrdm Once you have done this, there are three different levels of challenge to complete on the sheet attached in the next post. You can either use the sheet to help you or draw your own life cycle of a plant. Vocabulary that you need to use: seed germination dispersal pollination growing Just as a heads up, you are going to need some cress seeds for the next science lesson. You can get these from any garden centre or order them online very cheaply!

English Maths Topic

Monday Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To understand the features of a non-chronological report This week we are going to be writing a non-chronological report on an animal of your choice. First, think about what a non-chronological report is. What does chronological mean? Is it fiction or non-fiction? Where might you read a non-chronological report? Read the example non-chronological report on sharks in your resource pack.

What is the purpose? (Why is the letter being written?) Who are the audience? (Who is it written for?) What is the form? (Is it formal/informal? What type of text is it?) Now look carefully again at the example. What things do you notice about it? What features does it have? (Don’t look at the checklist yet!)

Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To identify right angles.

Page 2: Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner Learning ...€¦ · Monday Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To understand the features of a non-chronological report

Watch teacher video on features of a non-chronological report

Task: Stick the example text in the middle of a large piece of paper or whiteboard. Use the checklist to hunt for features and when you find them, label them as shown in the video. Extra challenge: Think about the purpose of each feature and add it to your label e.g. a sub-title or sub-heading introduces the theme of the paragraph so it’s easy to find the information that you need.

Remember an angle is where every pair of straight lines meet so check behind and underneath objects as well. Reasoning: What do you notice about the objects which contain right angles? Do they have similarities? How does this learning change your strategy for finding objects which contain a right angle? Use the reasoning bubbles in the resources below to help you with your explanation.

Tuesday Lesson 2: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To plan a non-chronological report Now that we’ve looked at the features, we can start to plan our own non-chronological report. First you need to choose an animal. Choose an animal that you either know lots about or can easily research. Choose some sub-headings for your non-chronological report –you need to choose three or four and then you might like to have a ‘fun fact’ or ‘did you know’ box too.

Lesson 2: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn. An angle is the turn you take from one straight line to another from the point they meet. Today we are going to create turns in jumps of 90˚. Watch today’s teacher video to see how to set up the activity and count each turn.

Week 2: Music lesson Learning objective: To listen and respond to The March Past of the Kitchen Utensils To link with our topic food to fork listen to a piece of classical music by Vaughan Williams called ‘March past of the of the kitchen utensils’ Link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi96gfl_Dog Activity 1 Draw a picture of what you imagine when listening to the piece of music. It maybe objects, real things or patterns.

I am going to model planning using a mind map but there is another planning option on the resources sheet if you prefer! Watch teacher video on planning a non-chronological report using a mind map Task: Use a mindmap or the planning sheet provided to plan your non-chronological report. Use the features checklist to make sure that your non-chronological report has everything in it! Extra challenge: Plan a picture and caption to use in your report.

Remember clockwise goes in the direction the hands move around a clock and anti-clockwise is the opposite direction (as if you are going back in time). There is a ‘turns’ help sheet with the resources at the end of this document. Activity: Try this turns activity at home, draw the turns on a circle and use an object to make ¼ ½ ¾ turns clockwise and anti-clockwise. Then send a video of the turns you have created. Make sure you describe each turn as you make it. You can also use your own body instead of an object by drawing the turns circle in chalk on the pavement outside. Just call out each turn as you make it. Remember you are turning 90˚ every time you complete a ¼ turn. Extra Challenge: Add together each 90˚ turn to calculate the total angle you have created. Use your 9 times table facts to help you add each 90˚.

Activity 2 Use the word mats listing words to describe dynamics (the volume) and the tempo (the speed) to help you answer the questions on the worksheet. You could write your answers in full sentences on a separate piece of paper and use the worksheet to prompt you.

Wednesday Lesson 3: approx. 1 hour Learning objective: To write a non-chronological report Today we’re ready to write our non-chronological report. Look back over your work from the previous two lessons and remind yourselves of the features of a non-chronological report. Re-read the example and your plan so that you can remember

Lesson 3: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle. To find acute and obtuse for angles greater or lesser than a right angle. Today we are going to learn about another two angles and how to identify them. A right angle is 90˚

Week 2: DT lesson Learning objective: To design a new object from leftover packaging How do we already reuse plastic? Can you think of any ways in your house that plastic packaging is reused? Think about ways in which packaging could be re-purposed. For example, could you make a

what your report is about and why you are writing it, as well as how the features can be used. Look at the writing ladder – how can you plan to use these in your writing?

Watch teacher video modelling how to write a non-chronological report Task: Write a non-chronological report on an animal of your choice. You can use the template in the resources pack if you wish, or you can use a blank piece of paper to design your own layout for the report.

Use the writing ladder to check your writing.

Acute angle is smaller than a right angle so is anything less than 90˚ Obtuse angle is bigger than a right angle (but less than a straight line which is 180˚)

Watch today’s teacher video to see how to use a right angle finder and a protractor to identify each of these angles. Activity: (see worksheets at the end) Task 1: Use the right angle finder, or a protractor, to decide if each angle is a right angle, bigger than or smaller than a right angle. Task 2: Use the right angle finder, or protractor, to identify and name each angle as right angle, acute or obtuse. Extra Challenge: Use the protractor to calculate the actual degrees of each angle, then order them from most to least.

‘Pringles’ pot into a pen/pencil holder? Could you remake a pot to hold hairclips in? What about a bird feeder? Mind map and discuss your ideas with someone in your household.

Task: Choose one of your mind map ideas to plan and design in more detail. Produce a labelled diagram of your design and you can colour it too if you like! Things to think about: -What materials will you need? -Will you need more than one item? -How will you decorate your item?

Page 5: Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner Learning ...€¦ · Monday Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To understand the features of a non-chronological report

Thursday Lesson 4: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To use a dictionary thesaurus to edit and improve my work Yesterday you wrote your non-chronological report so today we are going to edit and improve it. We are going to focus on using a thesaurus and a dictionary as our skills today but you can edit and improve your work in other ways too. First, read your work and check that it makes sense. Give yourself two stars and a wish:

I have used sub-headings to organise my paragraphs.

I have used correct punctuation all the way through.

I could use a conjunction to extend a sentence.

Now look through your work and identify five spellings you can improve and five words you could edit using a thesaurus. If you don’t have a thesaurus, try this: https://kidthesaurus.com/ Watch teacher video on using a dictionary and a thesaurus Task: Use a green pen to edit and improve your work. Start with your five spellings and five up-level words then use your green pen to edit the rest of the non-chronological report as you did last week.

Lesson 4: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To use reasoning to solve problems involving right angles. NRich: Right Angle Reasoning Challenge We are going to use our learning about angles from this week to take part in a reasoning challenge. Watch today’s teacher video to see how to set up the reasoning challenge. Activity: First use the prompts below to arrange the sticks to create right angles:

How can you place two sticks to make just one right angle?

Now make just two right angles using the two sticks.

Can you make three right angles? Four right angles?

How many right angles can you make using more sticks?

When you have completed the task, use the reasoning bubbles in the resources below to explain the strategies you used and the patterns you noticed.

Week 2: Geography Lesson Learning objective: To use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps. Last week we investigated how the physical and human features of Eaton have changed over the last 130 years. This week we are going to be looking closely at the area surrounding our homes and carrying out some field research. Use Digimaps to zoom in on the area surrounding your home and use this as a basis to create your own map. You can choose how far away from your home you include in your map. Here is an example of a map of our school.

Task: When you create your map, make sure you include:

Roads

Page 6: Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner Learning ...€¦ · Monday Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To understand the features of a non-chronological report

Houses (size, shape, position)

Any natural features (gardens, trees, fields, stream etc.)

Landmarks (churches, shops, monuments etc.)

A key to show which symbol or pattern represents each of the above

A compass to show the direction of north What do you notice about the features surrounding your home? Which human (man-made) features can you see? Which physical (natural) features can you see? If you don’t want to create a map for your own home, then create one for the school instead. https://digimapforschools.edina.ac.uk/ Username: NR46HS Password: rhubes7531

Friday Week 2: PSHE lesson (CR)

In the story Jenny becomes weighed down by the amount of worries she has.

Watch teacher video reading the story on Friday

Activity 1 You might not have any worries which is great. If you or someone does have worries what is the best thing to do? Make a list of the grown- ups you could go to if you have a worry.

What happens to worries in the light of day?

Page 7: Eaton Primary School Home Learning Planner Learning ...€¦ · Monday Lesson 1: approx. length 1 hour Learning objective: To understand the features of a non-chronological report

The little girl in the book had worries that looked like monsters. Draw a picture of your worries (if you have any) or write words to describe your worries).

Activity 2 Talking to a trusted adult can be really helpful if we are feeling a little anxious are upset. Being with friends can also be really helpful. What do you think makes a good friend? Why? Show me (in as creative way as you want!) what makes a good friend. Activity 3 Think of all the things you enjoy doing and make a list of them with some pictures. What is it you enjoy about these activities? If you’re allowed, choose one of the activities on your list to do. I look forward to seeing your ideas, Mrs Rushworth
