Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association History

There are five athletic associations for schools for the Deaf in the United States at the present time. These associations are Central, Eastern, Great Plains, Mason Dixon, and Western.

The Eastern Schools were the first to be organized. In 1927, Fred A. Moore, a teacher at the Old New Jersey School for the Deaf, hosted a basketball tournament among them. Ten schools participated: Kendall, New York (Fanwood), Pennsylvania, American, New Jersey, St. Joseph’s, Lexington, Western Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland. NJSD was the first tournament champion.

Six tournaments followed but they were not sponsored by any special group. George (Billy) Harlow, Athletic Director at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, suggested that an organization be started to sponsor these tournaments. This organization was called the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association – ESDAA. The first tournament sponsored by the ESDAA was held at St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf in 1934.

In 1961, the ESDAA Boys’ Basketball Teams were split into two divisions. For a brief time (1995-2001) it was modified into three divisions based on student population. It now is back to two divisions.

The Girls’ Basketball Tournament was started by Paul Barr at the Maryland School for the Deaf in 1977. This competition has grown in both scope and participation so that two divisions now exist.

Girls’ Volleyball has also grown since its inception in 1981. It is currently an all division tournament.

Cheerleaders were first invited to join the Boys’ Basketball Tournament in 1966 by Charles M. Jochem of MKSD. They competed informally until 1980 when, at St. Mary’s in Buffalo, the Cheerleading Tournament really began to take shape and become popular with events in both Division I and II. Currently there is one tournament for cheerleading and any school in the ESDAA may participate. It is run in conjunction with the Boys Division I Tournament.

The ESDAA also hosts tournaments in both 8-man and 11-man soccer.

The ESDAA also supports a Wrestling Tournament.

It is at the Track and Field Championships, however, that the true essence of sportsmanshipand camaraderie upon which the ESDAA has been built is exemplified. For here, all ESDAA members can come together to compete at the same time and a small school and large school trophies are awarded.

The WPSD Lions extend our heartfelt hospitality to the girls’ basketball teams of the American Tigers, Lexington Bluejays, Marie Philip Lady Ghosts, New York-Fanwood Tornadoes, and the Pennsylvania Panthers.

Our Deaf School Tournaments provide a wonderful and unique opportunity to rekindle old friendships and make new ones. They are also a spectacular chance for our athletic participants to highlight athletic skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Participation in these treasured opportunities underscores the importance of our cherished Schools for the Deaf for all of us! Welcome to the visiting schools, American School for the Deaf, Lexington School for the Deaf, Marie Philip School for the Deaf, New York School for the Deaf-Fanwood, and Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

While the student-athletes will be focusing on bringing home hardware, ESDAA is also a wonderful avenue for current student-athletes to create new friendships and lifelong memories. On behalf of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and Pittsburgh community, I personally want to extend a warm welcome to all participants for an enjoyable and successful 43rd Annual ESDAA Girls’ Basketball Tournament. I believe this year’s tournament will be a memorable one for each and every student who joins in the competition and fun. Over the next few days, I hope you enjoy the hospitality of the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and the Pittsburgh community. Our ESDAA Committee has been working very hard to ensure that you all have a memorable weekend.

We will welcome these schools as our guests: American, Lexington, Marie Philip, New York-Fanwood, and Pennsylvania schools for the Deaf for several basketball games. I hope you will make many new friends and be re-acquainted with those you’ve met in the past. Making friends and sharing ideas about your school and your life should be an important part of coming together. I strongly believe the ESDAA is a time to develop DEAF pride and to reinforce the fact that Deaf people working together can do anything they set out to accomplish. ESDAA is also a source of pride for the Deaf community and the students who have accomplished a high level of athletic achievement. Student involvement in athletics and other activities develops a sense of leadership and teamwork that leads to academic success and success in life.

For all basketball participants: Go out there on the court, making fantastic alley-oop passes, dunking, hitting 3-pointers, sinking free throws, and many other things that you are capable of doing and showcase your talents and sportsmanship!

For WPSD cheerleaders: Go out and cheer our teams to victory and many other things that you are capable of doing and showcase your talents and sportsmanship!

Let me again welcome all visitors for a good time of basketball games, social activities, and the positive spirit of competition that this 43rd Annual ESDAA Girls’ Basketball Tournament will provide.
