she teaches courses on the economic, social and urban history of Quebec and Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries, and she is also involved in the university’s programme in museum and heritage studies. Joanne Burgess is the principal investigator and director of two research partnerhips, both of which focus on the history and heritage of Montreal – they are the Laboratoire d’histoire et de patrimoine de Montréal, a team which has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, and the SSHRC Partnership Montréal, plaque tournante des échanges : histoire, patrimoine, devenir. Joanne Burgess’ research interests and publications are focussed on the history of industrialization as well as the evolution of urban space and society since 1800. Her current projects explore the history of consumption and the changes in commercial spaces and business practices in Victorian Montreal, the city’s role as a major seaport and commercial hub in the 19th century as well as the evolving spatial and social dynamics underlying the provisioning of the city. Professor Burgess has always engaged in public history, with a range of partners, in order to reach the broadest possible audience through a host of different media: academic and popular publications, conference presentations and public lectures, museum and virtual exhibitions, heritage studies and reports, as well as the development of web and other digital content. Most recently, she was a co-editor of Collecting Knowledge: New Dialogues on McCord Museum Collections/À la recherche du savoir: nouveaux regards sur les collections du Musée McCord. Finally, she and her collaborators have received the financial support of major granting agencies and they are also the recipients of numerous awards for excellence.
