TODAY’S HEADLINESRACING REVIEW

LION’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH YORK CONTINUESThe John Gosden-trained Roaring Lion stormed to victory in the Gr.1 Juddmonte International on the Knavesmire yesterday, the scene of his Gr.2 Dante Stakes romp.

The son of the now Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms-based Kitten’s Joy raced in mid-division on the inside as Thunder Snow (Helmet) and Latrobe (Camelot) took the eight runners along. Having turned for home, the field tacked across to the stand’s rail and the winner now found himself on the outside. Poet’s Word (Poet’s Voice) suffered the opposite fate and, while he was jostling for racing room, Roaring Lion and Oisin Murphy were racing away into a two-length lead. Poet’s Word got out and gave chase, but the winner was away and gone and scored by three and a quarter lengths. Thundering Blue (Exchange Rate) came with a typical late finish to claim third, a half a length behind the second, justifying his supplementation for £75,000.

Roaring Lion made his racecourse debut this time last year over 1m at Newmarket and backed it up with another novice at Kempton Park before going up in grade. He landed the Gr.2 Royal

Lodge Stakes at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course before finishing second to Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) in the Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy. Third in the Gr.3 Craven Stakes to subsequent Gr.1 Derby winner Masar (New Approach), he was then fifth in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas before producing a terrific performance when landing the Gr.2 Dante Stakes here. He perhaps did not stay the 1m4f in the Gr.1 Derby, but finished a creditable third.

out of the winning Street Sense mare Vionnet, a half-sister to the US Gr.2 winners Moulin De Mougin (Curlin) and Schiaparelli (Ghostzapper), out of a Gr.3-winning full-sister to the multiple Gr.3 winner California Flag (Avenue Of Flags).

PERSIAN LEADS HOME VOLTIGEUR 1-2 FOR GODOLPHIN AND APPLEBY Old Persian (Dubawi) and Cross Counter (Teofilo) completed a 1-2 for Godolphin homebreds and Charlie Appleby in the 1m4f Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes.

The son of Dubawi raced in second as Nelson (Frankel) ensured that this would be a true test of stamina. The pace did not seem to relent much, but the winner, as well as Cross Counter, came through to take it up three furlongs out. The latter put in a strong challenge, but Old Persian stayed on gallantly, holding off his stablemate by a head, with Kew Gardens (Galileo) staying on well in the closing stages one and a half lengths adrift of the leading pair.

A dual winner over a mile at two, he made his seasonal reappearance in a 1m2f Newmarket handicap before coming second in the Listed Newmarket Stakes and winning the Listed Fairway Stakes at the same track. He improved for a step up to 1m4f when landing the Gr.2 King Edward VII Stakes in good style, but could only manage sixth in the Gr.1 Irish Derby on his most recent start.

He is a half-brother to two-year-old Chapelli (Poet’s Voice), who was fourth in the Gr.3 Princess Margaret Stakes, out of Indian Petal (Singspiel), a lightly-raced full-sister to the 2007 Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes winner Silkwood. The third dam, Massaraat (Nureyev), is a Listed-winning full-sister to Miesque, a multiple Gr.1 winner and dam of two Classic winners in Kingmambo and East Of The Moon, grandam of another, Study Of Man, and third dam of two more, Karakonti and Alpha Centauri, also heroine of the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes, Gr.1 Falmouth Stakes and Gr.1 Prix Jacques Le Marois.

PHOENIX FLIES HOME IN ACOMB STAKESPhoenix Of Spain took a big step forward from winning a 7f Wolverhampton novice last month when landing the Gr.3 Acomb Stakes in good style for Charlie Hills.

The son of Lope De Vega was waited with out the back by Jamie Spencer as Swissterious (Swiss Spirit) and Ventura Ocean (Raven’s Pass) set a strong gallop. Phoenix Of Spain tacked across to the stand’s rail and began to make headway over two furlongs

out. With Swissterious weakening, the favourite Watan (Toronado) came through to take it up, but Spencer had plenty of horse underneath him and Phoenix Of Spain stayed on well to score by a length and a half, with Persian Moon (Makfi) a further two lengths back in third.

Bred by Cherry Faeste, he is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Royal Whip Stakes third Central Square (Azamour), the Gr.3 (then) Dee Stakes-placed Kingsdesire (King’s Best) and the dual Listed-placed Lucky Beggar (Verglas). Their dam, Lucky Clio (Key Of Luck), is a half-sister to the dual Gr.2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein winner and sire Special Kaldoun (Alzao).

I CAN FLY LANDS LISTED RUBY STAKESI Can Fly led home a 1-2 for the fillies in the Listed Ruby Stakes at Killarney yesterday afternoon, staying on strongly to record her first Stakes victory.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock was held up in second-last place by Seamie Heffernan as Marshall Jennings (Lawman) led the field through the first furlong of the one-mile contest. Petticoat (Cape Cross) took over at the head of affairs, as I Can Fly crept into contention until she hit the front over two furlongs out. From there, victory looked assured as she powered clear and stayed on well to win by three and a quarter lengths from fellow three-year-old Rionach (Sea The Stars), who stayed on well to overcome Marshall Jennings inside the final furlong, with the latter finishing third by a length.

A winner on debut at Dundalk last September, I Can Fly has been highly-tried ever since, earning her first black type when third in the Gr.3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at two, and filling the same place in the Gr.3 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown in April. Well beaten in the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket and again in the Gr.1 Oaks at Epsom, she showed promise when staying on well into fourth in the Listed Corrib Stakes at Galway at the beginning of August, beaten only a length.

A 240,000gns graduate of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, I Can Fly is a half-sister to the Listed 7f winner Viscount Barfield (Raven’s Pass) and the 1m4f maiden winner All Of Me (Teofilo), out of a placed half-sister to the top-class miler Landseer (Danehill), and the Listed winner and Gr.1-placed Ikhtyar (Unfuwain).

SEVEN HOPING TO TURN THE TIDE AGAINST A SEA OF CLASSSeven top fillies are set to line up against the favourite Sea Of Class for an intriguing clash in the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks today. The Sea The Stars filly, who won the Gr.1 Irish Oaks under a cool hands and heels ride from James Doyle, will once again be partnered by the in-form rider and, although the runner-up that day, the Gr.1 Oaks winner Forever Together, misses out on a rematch, Sea Of Class will be re-opposed by the fourth and fifth in Bye Bye Baby (Galileo) and Magic Wand (Galileo). Winners of the Gr.3 Blue Wind Stakes and the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes respectively, they were more than five and nine lengths behind the winner.

The Gr.1 Prix de Diane winner Laurens is chief among Sea Of Class’s market rivals, but will be stepping up to a mile and a half for the first time. The winner of the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile at two, stamina was a worry for the daughter of Siyouni when tackling the Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary, but she battled gamely to triumph by a short head before taking the Chantilly Classic.

The Classic generation face stiff competition from some high-class older fillies, including Coronet (Dubawi). The winner of the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes last year, she was runner-up to Enable here 12 months ago and defeated Horseplay (Cape Cross) by a length and a half in the 1m2½f Gr.2 Middleton Stakes in May. Horseplay did bounce back to win the Gr.2 Lancashire Oaks over this trip in July and had the three-year-old Flattering (Galileo) 14 and a half lengths in arrears.

Eziyra (Teofilo) is another high-class runner representing the older fillies. She was third to Enable in last year’s Gr.1 Irish Oaks and landed back-to-back Gr.3 victories in the Give Thanks Stakes and the Enterprise Stakes in the months following. She was not seen for 334 days but returned to the winner’s enclosure when taking the Gr.3 Ballyroan Stakes less than two weeks ago.

This was a smart winning debut from Hello Youmzain (Kodiac), who was brought into contention with a couple of furlongs still to run and stayed on well after taking the lead inside the final furlong before drawing away to win by four lengths from Arabic Channel (English Channel).

He is a half-brother to this season’s dual G3 winner in Germany, Royal Youmzain (Youmzain), also Gr.1-placed on his latest start over 1m4f, the Listed 5f winner Zuhoor Baynoona (Elnadim), as well as Saglawy (Youmzain), a winner and Listed-placed on the Flat over 1m1f and a Gr.2 winner over hurdles. Their dam is an unraced half-sister to the Listed 1m2f winner Persian Majesty (Grand Lodge), out of a half-sister to the Gr.2 Hardwicke Stakes victor and sire Sandmason (Grand Lodge), and the 1m2f Listed winner and black-type producer Sardegna (Pharly).

Spasha produced a colt by Dragon Pulse this year.

The third dam is the French winner Macedoine (King Of Macedon), who produced four winners from seven foals.

Lucky Clio has a yearling full-brother to this winner (Lot 383 at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale).

“This will take a bit out of her as she has had a tough run first-up. We will get her home and assess things, but at this stage she will be going to Hastings next. She didn’t have a great three-year-old season, but it looks like we are in for a great year this year.”

Bred by Marie Leicester, Melody Belle was a NZ$57,500 purchase for Te Akau principal David Ellis from the Haunui Farm draft during the Premier session of the 2016 National Yearling Sale at Karaka. The victory takes her career earnings to more than NZ$986,000 from six victories, with five of those at Stakes level, including the rich Listed Karaka Million (1200m) as a two-year-old.

SEA KING NATIONAL HERO AT FOURTH ATTEMPTTwelve-year-old New Zealand jumper Sea King (NZ) (Shinko King) chased down Spying On You (NZ) (Yamanin Vital) in the final strides of a drama-filled running of the A$350,000 Grand National Steeplechase (4500m) at Ballarat on Sunday.

Crisp Steeplechase (3900m) winner Excellent Rhythm (Elvstroem) strung the field out once more as he did at Sandown, but he was not able to last out the marathon trip this time around, with the home straight leaving it a race in three - Spying On You, Monarch Chimes (NZ) (Shinko King) and Sea King.

The Grant Young-trained Spying On You, partnered by New Zealand hoop Aaron Kuru, had seen off the Kiwi galloper Monarch Chimes, but the Patrick Payne-trained Sea King - who fell late in last year’s race when challenging Wells - had his day on Sunday.

Sunday was Sea King’s fourth shot at the National having finished third in 2014, fourth in 2016 before falling last year.

Winning trainer Patrick Payne deflected the credit for Sea King’s victory to New Zealand trainer Kevin Myers. “I can’t stick my chest out,” Payne said. “They sent him over fit and well and all I had to do was keep him breathing.”

Sea King has likely run his last race in Australia, where retirement is mandatory for horses beyond 12 years of age. The son of Shinko King has now won more than NZ$1 million in prize money with 20 wins and 24 placings from 77 starts.

NEWSTHIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

MELODY BELLE WINS FOXBRIDGE PLATEA nail-biting finish to the Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate (1200m) resulted in former top juvenile Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands) taking top honours.

Race favourite Julius (NZ) (Swiss Ace) and Melody Belle set down to a pitched battle in the middle of the track over the final 200m as they cleared out from their rivals.

Melody Belle and rider Shafiq Rusof refused to yield as she put her nose in front at the right time to snatch victory from a game Julius, with veteran stayer Authentic Paddy (NZ) (Howbaddouwantit) storming home late for third.

A Gr.1 winner as a two-year-old, the now four-year-old Commands mare had disappointed slightly in the latter stages of her three-year-old campaign when unplaced in two Sydney runs after taking out the Gr.3 Mongolian Khan Trophy (1200m) at Ellerslie in January.

Freshened up by the team at Te Akau Racing, the mare had endured an interrupted preparation with the postponement of the Te Teko trials forcing trainer Jamie Richards to line her up at Te Rapa without the benefit of a lead-up run.

None of that mattered as the mare showed plenty of heart to gain the win and announce herself as a major contender for the first Gr.1 race of the New Zealand season, the Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings on Saturday week.

Trainer Richards, who has taken over training the powerful Te Akau team on his own this season, was relieved the mare had performed to her best after providing him with some concerns in the build-up to the race.

“I was just a little bit worried during the week as her work wasn’t that flash on Tuesday,” he said. “I didn’t want to pump her up too much but she’s a real racehorse and she was given a lovely ride by Shafiq.

proved to be an astute purchase. Among the ten winners she bred were the unbeaten Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Regal Rose and her full-brother, the Japanese-raced Generalist, whose winnings nearly topped £1m and included a Stakes race now designated Gr.2. They were by Danehill, a son of Shaadi’s sire Danzig.

Regal Rose went on to breed the Medicean colt Royal Banker, who was placed in Graded Stakes company in America, but was otherwise relatively disappointing at stud and was passed on in 2012 for 65,000gns. However, her Fantastic Light daughter Regal Riband, who was successful as a juvenile, was retained, and she became the dam of the very smart filly Regal Realm, another by Medicean, who won the Gr.3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood at two and returned there to win the Gr.3 Oak Tree Stakes the next year.

Not all their purchases yielded such immediate dividends. Blonde Prospect, bought for $140,000, when carrying her first foal, produced only minor winners and soon found her way to Japan.

Although unplaced herself, she had an extremely attractive pedigree. Her dam, Bev Bev, was a smart two-year-old in France, where she finished third in the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale, and was a three-parts-sister of Ajdal. Also trained by Sir Michael Stoute, he was Sheikh Mohammed’s first colt to win a Gr.1 race when he was successful in the Dewhurst Stakes. He went on to become Champion sprinter at three after failing to stay in the Gr.1 Derby. Her dam also bred the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes winner Formidable (Forli) and the very smart French racemare Fabuleux Jane (Le Fabuleux).

David and Patricia Thompson’s Cheveley Park Stud has long been at the forefront of British breeders. The stud was purchased by them in 1975, in partnership with Ken

Mackey, with the intention that it was run partly as a stud and partly as a training centre. The Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes winner Music Boy, who was bought as a yearling, was trained there as a three-year-old, when he won the Gr.3 (then) King George Stakes, before becoming the stud’s first sire.

Following Ken Mackey’s death in 1983, the Thompsons took sole ownership and the whole focus was changed. The acreage was rapidly increased and the stallion roster expanded, with an emphasis on sprinters. Primo Dominie and Prince Sabo were among the first new recruits. Polar Falcon, purchased in training, was soon to follow, later to be joined by his son, the homebred Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes winner Pivotal, who was to play such an important part in the development of the stud.

At the same time, the Thompsons sought to expand and upgrade their broodmare band. Through the late eighties and nineties, under the expert guidance of their manager Chris Richardson, who took over in 1987, and initially advised by David Minton, the Thompsons were prolific buyers of both yearling fillies and mares at the sales.

In their quest, they were regular visitors to Keeneland. Among their earlier, and most significant, purchases was the Gr.2 (then) Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Exclusive Order, who was bought for $825,000 in 1987. She thoroughly justified that outlay when she went on to breed them their first Classic winner, the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas winner Entrepreneur; as well as the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes winner Exclusive, herself the dam of those very good fillies Chic and Echelon and the grandam of Integral. Among Exclusive Order’s other descendants are the Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes winner Virtual and the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes winner Iceman, who both stood at Cheveley Park.

Their most successful yearling purchase was probably Gay Gallanta, a $350,000 purchase at the July Sale from the family of A P Indy and Summer Squall. She was the Champion Two-Year-Old filly in 1994, after collecting both the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes and the Gr.3 (then) Queen Mary Stakes. She went on to breed the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes and Gr.2 Lennox Stakes hero Byron.

A less expensive buy was the Conquistador Cielo mare Ruthless Rose, who was bought for $189,000 in 1989. Although unplaced in her only two starts, her obvious attraction was that she was a half-sister to Shaadi, who earlier that year had won the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and the Gr.2 (then) St James’s Palace Stakes for Sir Michael Stoute, a long-time director of the stud. Blonde Prospect’s pedigree flourished in the immediate years after her purchase. Fabuleux Jane became the grandam of the outstanding juvenile Arazi, whose victory in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile will never be forgotten by anyone who witnessed it, and later of his three-parts-brother Noverre. Others such as the Gr.1 John Morris Handicap winner Link River; the Gr.3 Honey Bee Handicap winner Sterling Pound; the Gr.3 (then) Queen’s Vase hero Stelvio and his sister Safa, who was runner-up in the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile, added further lustre to the family. Sterling Pound went on to breed the Gr.2 Tom Fool Handicap winner Exchange Rate. Now a successful sire, his son Thundering Blue, third in yesterday’s Gr.1 Juddmonte International Stakes and winner of the Gr.2 York Stakes, and daughter Homerique took the Gr.3 Prix de Pysche at Deauville on the last weekend of July.

Only one daughter of Blonde Prospect was retained by the Thompsons, and that was the Nottingham 1m maiden winner White Palace, who was by Shirley Heights, the sire of Stelvio and Safa. It proved to be an inspired decision. Her eight winners included the Listed winners Portal (Hernando), who was also third in the Gr.2 Lancashire Oaks, and Ice Palace (Polar Falcon), as well as the latter’s close relative, the Listed-placed White Lake (Pivotal). Ice Palace has gone on to breed the dual Listed winner Queen Of Ice (Selkirk), while another of White Palace’s daughters, the useful 7f winner Palatial, has fared even better. Her progeny are headed by the very smart Nayef filly Spacious, winner of the Gr.2 May Hill Stakes at two and the Gr.2 Windsor Forest Stakes at four, as well as being runner-up in three Gr.1 contests, the 1,000 Guineas, the Falmouth Stakes and the Matron Stakes; and the Medicean gelding Dimension, the winner of three Gr.2 races in Canada, including the King Edward Stakes. Spacious in turn is the dam of the current very useful three-year-old Gabr, from the first crop of the very promising young sire Intello, who currently stands at Cheveley Park.

Regal Reality, another son of Intello, further advertised his prowess as a sire at Glorious Goodwood when an impressive winner of the Gr.3 Thoroughbred Stakes on only his third start. In so doing, he became his sire’s third Group winner, following in the footsteps of the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat winner Intellogent and Young Rascal. He is also the sire of Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Louis D’Or.

Regal Reality’s dam is none other than the aforementioned Regal Realm, whose third dam, as we have seen, is Ruthless Rose. Also on the mark at Goodwood was Portal’s daughter Pilaster, who was a very game winner of the Gr.2 Lillie Langtry Stakes. She is by Nathaniel, who is bred on the same Galileo/Danehill cross as Intello.

As already indicated, Regal Reality’s dam, Regal Realm, won the Gr.3 Oak Tree Stakes, another race held at Glorious Goodwood, and, by a strange coincidence, Portal also gained her most important win at that meeting when winning the Listed Alice Keppel Stakes, the forerunner of the Lillie Langtry before the race was upped in both distance and grade. Her best previous foal, the Hurricane Run colt Windshear, was beaten only a neck by Snow Sky in the Gr.3 Gordon Stakes at three and then returned the next season to finish third in the Gr.3 Glorious Stakes, both of which races are run there, too. The family obviously has a liking for the course.

Windshear probably put up his best effort when he finished fourth to Kingston Hill in the Gr.1 St Leger, but the stud decided to let Portal go last year and she was sold for just 16,000gns to Highgrove Stud at Tattersalls. The stud at least has the consolation that they still have Pilaster.

It proved to be an outstanding week overall for Cheveley Park at Goodwood. They were the owner-breeders of not only Regal Reality and Pilaster, but also of the Frankel filly Veracious who finished third in the Gr.1 Nassau Stakes. They also bred the Dutch Art colt More Than This, who landed a valuable nursery for Richard Fahey; while their stalwart stallion, Pivotal, sired his 28th individual Gr.1 winner when Lightning Spear finally landed his first top-level win at the sixteenth attempt in the feature race, the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes.

Veracious is a half-sister to Mutakayyef. Their dam, Infallible, winner of the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes and runner-up in the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes and the Gr.1 Falmouth Stakes, is out of Irresistible, the grandam of Garswood among others. Irresistible was a Listed and Group-placed winning daughter of the Danzig mare Polish Romance, a $450,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland by the stud in 1995. The results at Goodwood showed those early investments in the American market are certainly reaping rewards still.

Since Goodwood, there has been a further dividend. The Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes winner Advertise (Showcasing), another bred by Cheveley Park, is out of the Pivotal mare Furbelow, a winning full-sister to the American Listed winner Red Diadem. Their dam, Red Tiara, a three-parts-sister of the good Japanese sprinter Meiner Love, was another American purchase, having been bought at Keeneland July for $950,000. She was out of the four-time Group and Graded Stakes winner Heart Of Joy, who was also runner-up in the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas, and was yet another trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Red Tiara proved to be a disappointment on the course, but she is now not only the grandam of Advertise, but also of the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes winner Saayerr and the Gr.3 Flying Childers Stakes second Ornate.
