Information Page Iain Cunningham from Engage Renfrewshire was nominated and short listed for the Social Enterprise Champion of the year at the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2015. All those shortlisted were invited to the Scottish Parliament for an evening

Reception on Tuesday 3 November, where the winners were announced. Iain’s nomination and shortlisting was in recognition for the promotion and support that Engage, through Iain conducts daily to ensure that existing and aspiring social enterprises are given access to every development and funding opportunity to ensure that they maximise their potential. Unfortunately Iain did not win this time around. Our congratulations go to Isobel Grigor of the Calman Trust. However on a local note; congratulations to Arkleston Primary School who won the Inspiring Youth award. Scotland’s annual awards for innovation and success in social enterprise showcase how social enterprises are improving Scotland’s economy and society. 2015 also marks the 10 year anniversary of Social Enterprise Scotland, as well as the year of the first ever Social Enterprise Census Scotland, demonstrating a robust and growing business community. Fraser Kelly, Chief Executive, Social Enterprise Scotland, said: “The Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2015 is a unique opportunity for social enterprises of all types to step up and be counted and show us how they’re changing Scotland. The diversity and quality of applications this year has been fantastic, congratulations to the winners and to everyone who was commended and shortlisted. Social enterprise is the future of business in Scotland, as a more sustainable and progressive way to deliver essential goods and services for everyone.”

Awards for All Scotland is an easy way for smaller organisations to get small amounts of funding.

It is focussed on organisations who have not received a grant from the pro-gramme in the last three years.

Awards For All Scotland gives groups a chance to apply for a grant of between £500 and £10,000 for projects that aim to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need.

You can apply to Awards For All Scotland if you are a not for profit / voluntary or community group, social enter-prise, community council, school or statutory body.

We will fund a range of projects which involve bringing local people together, helping people learn, improving local spaces and getting people more active.

The programme is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund Scotland and sportscotland .

As you may already be aware, Paisley is bidding to be UK City of Culture in 2021...and we’re all invited to be part of it! The bid is taking place as part of a wider push by the council and its partners to use culture and heritage to transform Renfrewshire’s future.

The public launch took place on Saturday 14 November alongside the town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on.

What is UK City of Culture? UK City of Culture is run by the UK Government’s Department of Culture,

Media and Sport and takes place every four years. The two previous winners were Derry (2013) and Hull (2017). It sees a 12-month extravaganza of major national events in one place - for example, Derry hosted Radio 1’s Big Weekend and the Turner Prize, among others. But it isn’t just a big year-long party...it’s about using the spotlight to create long-lasting economic, social and cultural change. Bids are due to be lodged in spring 2017 with the winner to be announced at the end of that year. How will winning actually benefit Paisley and Renfrewshire? A successful bid would put Paisley in the international spotlight, help us attract visitors, generate footfall for our town centre and bring new energy to the High Street. It will also create jobs, change perceptions of the area at home and abroad and help build a new sense of pride in Paisley. Paisley isn’t a city...so how can it be a city of culture? The competition rules say it is open to large towns and urban areas. Who is actually running the bid? The bid is very much a partnership and is being governed by a Paisley 2021 board, chaired by the leader of Renfrewshire Council and including senior people from UWS, West College Scotland and Glasgow Airport, as well as business and community representatives. How can I get involved? You can show your support for the bid on social media by sharing your thoughts on what the town means to you and why you think we can win the title by using #Paisley2021 The website www.paisley2021.co.uk is due to be launched very soon and you can go online to sign up for the newsletter and register your name as a volunteer. Cllr Mark Macmillan, Chair of Paisley for UK City of Culture 2021 Partnership Board said: “The name Paisley is already known around the world thanks to the Pattern which bears its name. Paisley's bid for UK City of Culture will take the town's unique story and retell it to the world. "For its size, Paisley's contribution to the world has been massive and I don’t want us to be shy in shouting about it”.

ANNOUNCING YEAR OF THE DAD 2016! www.yearofthedad.org Would you like to celebrate the difference a great dad can make – to children, families and society? Then why not get involved in Year of the Dad, a clarion-call for collaboration and shared insight to employers and services across the country, starting in January 2016. Masterminded by the charity Fathers’ Network Scotland with Scottish Government funding and the support of a coalition of partner organisations, the Year of the Dad is an opportunity to accelerate culture change away from age-old stereotypes of mum as carer and dad as wage slave, and towards gender equality both in parenting and the workplace. Research overwhelmingly shows how children and women benefit from the positive involvement of fathers right from the start. That needs to be reflected in everything from antenatal classes to employment practice, and the Year of the Dad will help by showcasing those already showing best practice, and resourcing those who want to make changes. Key to all this will be the Fathers’ Charter, currently in its final stages of market-testing, which offers employers and services the chance to kitemark their good practice and set a course for father-inclusive practice. If you’d like to know more about it, and have your say, you’re invited to attend an event for [Cathy can you input the details here?] Take the example of John and Nikki Duncan: when the couple decided to adopt 2-year-old twins last summer, their shared employer Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board allowed Nikki to take the first five months off as main carer, while John took over for the next seven – a practice only more recently enshrined in legislation as shared parental leave. “It wasn’t difficult, but it was very unusual,” says John, a respiratory nurse specialist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. “My own line manager has been absolutely fantastic about it. At the end of the day, employers have nothing to worry about, because people given this opportunity will be more loyal, so it’s win-win.” You may already have other great examples of fathers fully included as service users or supported as employees - or you may need support to make those culture changes. Either way, please sign up for more information about this positive campaign at: www.yearofthedad.org/join. @yearofthedad Together we can help make Scotland the best place in the world for children to grow up! Saltire Awards are the new Scottish awards designed to formally recognise the commitment and contribution of youth volunteering to voluntary organisations. These awards are issued to young volunteers between the ages of 12-25 years. Saltire Awards are designed to encourage, enable and reward youth volunteering and

to make it easy for organisations to support young people to take part. Supported by the Scottish Government the Saltire Awards enable young volunteers to record the skills, experience and learning gained through successful volunteering placements provided by local and national voluntary agencies. Achievement is recognised in the form of Saltire Award certificates and Young Scot reward points. Engage Renfrewshire actively promotes Saltire Awards across Renfrewshire to young volunteers via schools, further education establishments, youth and community groups. Engage Renfrewshire issues the Saltire Award certificates to those young volunteers who are registered with Saltire and have established a Saltire Ambassador group to peer assess Saltire Summit nominations. VOLUNTEERS WANTED @ RENFREWSHIRE CARERS

VOLUNTEER MINIBUS DRIVERS

Renfrewshire Carers Centre Young Carers Project provides information advice and support to young carers up to the age of 18, who are looking after a family member who is affected by disability, physical illness, drug or alcohol use, a

relative who is frail or elderly, learning disability, mental ill health or HIV/AIDS.

A big part of this work is to give them some time out from caring and the chance to be a child again without all the responsibility that a caring gives.

To do this they presently offer group session for young carers 4 evenings a week. As it is not always easy for parents to bring and collect the young people from the centre due to either having a disability themselves or having the care of a disabled child we transport the young people to and from the activity and take them home after the session has finished. To do this they presently offer group session for young carers 4 evenings a week. As it is not always easy for parents to bring and collect the young people from the centre due to either having a disability themselves or having the care of a disabled child we transport the young people to and from the activity and take them home after the session has finished.

To do this the project has acquired the use of a minibus but now we ungently need drivers who would be able to help provide this service.

If you could spare a 2–3 hours in an evening between 6pm and 9pm then this may be the ideal role for you.

STALLED SPACES SCOTLAND update

Renfrewshire Council has funding in place of £20,000 to run a grant funding scheme called Stalled Spaces Scotland as a means of revitalising town / local centres and empowering communities. This scheme is man-aged by Architecture and Design Scotland (A&DS) who provided funding of £10,000 which was conditional on it being matched by Renfrewshire Council. Renfrewshire Council is one of seven Scottish local authorities to have been offered Stalled Spaces Scotland funding.
