    From the Desk of KVR

    Dear Colleagues,

Time moves very fast and it seems as though I penned my previous note just a month back. Despite the not-so-good news on Indian and international economic situations, ourICs have raced against the challenges to win considerablequantum of orders during the first quarter of 2012-13.Our Chairman’s conviction of ‘staying focussed enhancesperformance and multiplies shareholder value’ stands

vindicated. Focus gets sharpened as the challenges increaseand it is quite true to our current business scenario. ‘A busy man has time for everything’ and let me wish all ourfellow L&T-ites to be focussed and busy in a constructive

way both in personal and professional life.

During my recent site visits, I had the pleasure of meetinga lot of L&T-ites especially the new entrants to L&T family.

With construction being the core, as the Company’s volume

increases, the staff strength would also increase. Inductionof close to 3000 GETs and DETs per year doesn’t sufficeour ever-increasing demand. While such a large-scalerecruitment – visiting nearly 250 institutions – is a massivechallenge in itself, we should be conscious of thisphenomenon and strive for increasing our staff productivity at various levels to be sure that such large-scale recruitment is inescapable to meet our needs.

Whenever I address a group of HR personnel, I insist upon having some robust measures to quickly mould thenew entrants to L&T’s way of working, culture and valuesystems. But I realise that this is not just the job of HR alone. It is everyone’s duty. Whosoever has, say, more than

4-5 years of experience within L&T should be the brand ambassador for its values, culture and way of life. We must be open, friendly and courteous. This should make thenewcomers to shed their inhibition and jell well in theteam.

Most of our senior management team members have risenthrough ranks and all of us had the fortune of someonehandholding us during those fragile formative periods. First impression is the best impression and when a person joinsthe L&T family his experience should be such that he

should feel that he has reached his dream job. This is very much within our hands. We may have time constraints dueto work exigencies but we should realise this is one of our

very important responsibilities. It is not out of place toquote our founding father Mr. Henning Holck-Larsen,“Machinery must be there, buildings must be there, but

without the people it’s all nothing. People are our only realasset”. L&T cherishes this value very much even today.

On the other hand, the newcomer must be proud of beingan L&T-ite. L&T stands for professionalism, meritocracy and rich values. L&T gives immense opportunities for itsemployees to learn and explore new things. Innovationand creativity are interwoven into its culture. Herebenchmarks are set only to be broken. Complacency is a

word unknown in L&T’s dictionary. My suggestion to new entrants would be to plan long-term and stay put. You aresure to reap benefits.

Wishing you all best of everything in life!

    EIP Visitor Information Portal Launched

Visitor Information Portal was inaugurated with a pre-launch demo to Mr. B.Ramakrishnan and Mr. A. Mohandas on April 18, 2012 by Mr. B. Srinivasan (Head –Information Systems), Mr. R. Giridharan (DGM – Systems), and team. The new portalis an upgradation of the existing Visitor Management System for managing visitors at HQ campus. A visitor at HQ can now register through the touchscreen-based visitorself-registration terminal which is enabled at the reception area. The whole process issimplified and the visitor only needs to key in his identity details and the person whomhe is scheduled to meet by providing the mobile number or part of the name or emailid etc. Once the registration is completed, he is given a visitor pass which has got abuilt-in RFID tag.

On a trial basis two visitors’ kiosks with touchscreen and RFID reader are enabled at the receptions of CRR centre and TC 2 building. Details of visitors entering thesebuildings are recognised, recorded and immediately flashed in the security terminal and on the Visitor Terminal in the respective buildings.

The RFID-based Visitor Information Portal keeps track of the visitor right from entry to exit through all the buildings they enter. A complete visitor analysis like how many visitors have come, how many have exited, how many have entered a particular building can be done at the security terminal. The RFID tags arere-usable and so eco-friendly and have no recurring cost. The passes have to be returned at the security terminal whileexiting.

BKS has had an eventful innings of close to18 years across significant projects. He states, “I was fortunateto be associated with a cross section of projects across different

sectors and this enabled my career evolution.”Speaking on this assignment he says “the coal handling packagefor 2x500 MW Anpara Thermal Power Plant is valued at Rs. 372 crore. The scope included detailed design, engineering, manufacture, shop fabrication, assembly testing and inspectionat manufacturer’s work, packing, dispatch, transportation, transit insurance, delivery to site, unloading, handling and storage at site, complete services of construction, erectionsupervision, testing, commissioning and handing over the plant to UPRVUNL after successful trial operation and conductingPerformance and Guarantee tests including all the associated electrical, civil, structural and architectural work.” BKShighlights, “the onus of executing India’s first thermal power

we were right on target to accomplish the commissioning of one of the largest renewable energy projects of the country.”

BR highlights “the team was divided into work activity groups based on the DC and electrical works. The solar field

was segregated into three zones and we had individual in-charges to oversee the DC works along with the civil activities.

We had in-charges for testing and commissioning. With a staff strength of only 15, we went about executing the project. As80% of job value comprised of supply materials, strategizingthe logistic planning was paramount to the execution. Thefoundation stub materials were procured without exemptionas much of the work was dependent on this activity.”

BR makes special mention of the support from the designteam. He says “to review the practical issues, the team was at

site and implemented prompt changes especially with regard to the inventor and control rooms. It was proposed by thedesign team to go in for pile design concreting of greaterdepth with smaller diameter, against the usual open typefoundations. This helped us to speed up the work and achievethe targets.” He adds the work gangs were continuously supplied with materials right on the field. The site achieved apeak production of 14000 modules erection per day and 45km of cable laying in a day.

BR hails from Trichy in Tamil Nadu. His family comprises hisparents and sister who reside in his hometown. The youngman has many talents up his sleeve, apart from his engineeringprowess; he plays the violin with élan and is good at

    badminton.

    24  April - June 2012 April - June 2012

In less than a year’s time Mr. K.C. Parameshaiah (KCP) hasbeen at the helm of four solar power projects. Commencing

with the 5 MW solar PV plant at Dhama, KCP subsequently executed the 6 MW, 20 MW and 25 MW plants at Charanka.KCP says “this was perhaps the most demanding phase of my career. The records are now a benchmark in the execution of solar PV projects and I’m proud to be a part of thesemilestones.”

In a career spanning close to 25 years, KCP has handled adiverse spectrum of power transmission and distributionprojects. It is this know-how and expertise which has givenhim the edge while executing stringent deadline projects. Hesays “project management is a versatile portfolio and the menholding forte need to be adept in various domains. In my longcareer with L&T, this versatility has been thrust at different phases of my career. The present role as a cluster project manager at Ahmedabad since April 2012 has been a challengingand interesting stint.”

Speaking on the execution, KCP says “since the time span wasminimal, we had to plan with precision and monitor on various

fronts such as design, procurement, execution etc. to ensurethat work was progressing round the clock to meet the stringent schedule. To capitalise on speed and time we have used prefabbuildings for the control and inverter rooms and speeded upthe ramming works by using state-of-the-art rammingmachines. Since the site was spread over an area of 350 acres, managing the resources and labour was a critical issue. Inaddition to this, we encountered unprecedented flooding

unseen in the last 25 years. The team had to negotiate thisnatural challenge. Handling the fragile and expensive framed,

frameless thin film, crystalline PV modules and inverters inrainy weather was a deft task.” He adds at a 25 MW plant inCharanka “we had to execute 60 modules with each structure

weighing close to 5 t. Out of the 12 plots, 11 had nearly 132structures generating around 2.25 MW each.”

On the home front, KCP has a loving family. His wife Gangais a homemaker. The couple has two children. Elder daughter,Vishakha, is in Class XII while son Vishal is in Class VI.

For Mr. Sachin Kumar Borisa (SKB), Assistant Construction Manager, at 25 MW Solar Photo-Voltaic Power Project, Charanka, this has been a landmark

assignment. Joining L&T in May 2011, SKB was immediately posted at site asin-charge. He says “the onus was complete and we worked as a team foraccomplishing this milestone which was inaugurated by the Prime Minster.”

Speaking on the travails of this project, SKB says “the most important thing isthe deadline. Unlike other projects, here it is just a couple of months and thelead time is almost nullified. We were given a time period of six months but unprecedented rains and local issues ensured that we were left with only threemonths to complete the task. The remote locale of the project meant that wehad to initially establish a firm set-up to proceed with the works. It was a hard task amidst a harsh environment. In addition to this was the execution hurdles.

The concrete foundations as per the design did not match the load carryingcapacity. Hence we had to supplement with appropriate reinforcement.Fabrication was another critical task which needed continuous monitoring toalign the matching of structural elements.”

Huge quantum of soil backfilling was another task which had to be carried out immediately after the heavy rains. SKB asserts “though the scope was not contractual, the onus was on us to make headway for execution. Since theschedule was lean, we had to implement parallel execution method withcontinuous monitoring and control measures. At places where there was large

waterlogging, we have implemented augur system for the foundation work of inverter room and control room, as against the pedestal and footing process, after the approval from the design team”

SKB’s family includes his wife Vinita who has done her M.Phil and is a homemaker. The couple has a daughter, Yashree. SKBcherishes his maiden assignment in L&T and says “this job was highly appreciated by GPCL for the quality of work and housekeeping achieved during the Prime Minister’s visit.”

    25 April - June 2012 April - June 2012

Hailing from an agricultural family, it was a sheer passion forengineering that drove Mr. K.S. Rangachar (KSRC), ClusterProject Manager for Solar BU at Bangalore, to take up aprofessional pursuit. Reflecting back on the choice made hesay, “It has been almost 28 years since I have done theengineering facet and the journey has been most fulfilling.Stepping into execution of the solar power projects has brought another dimension to my career. It is a new high and the urge

to explore and excel gets further intensified.”

KSRC’s solar project’s tryst began with the 5 MW ESP PV power plant at Dhama, Gujarat. This was followed by thetrendsetting 10 MW Millennium PV power plant at Dhama,Gujarat. He says “This project was executed with trackingtechnology using IDEEMAEC concept from Germany, whichis a first of its kind in Asia. The plant is spread across 70 acresand comprised 1753 trackers with mono crystalline PV panels.

The scope involved civil, structural and electrical works. Themajor challenge was in maintaining the tolerance level of thetubes (above which the tracker is affixed) within 0.2 degreelimits. The major structural work involved erection of theIdeematec tracker along with the vertical tube axis. Achievingthe perfect balance was a critical task.”

KSRC states “The remote locality was another bigger issuesince no contractor was ready to mobilize manpower. However, through effective networking and negotiation we were able tosource workmen. To speed up the civil works, the team went in for prefabricated buildings along with pile foundations.Since this was a first of its kind project, we went about inestablishing innovative procedures and systems. For civil works

we established a lab for concrete testing. The service of a BVQ agency was called for to monitor and guide over the quality issues. In the structural arena, we sent two potential engineers

to Pondicheery for getting trained in the erection process and developed the procedure for Ideematec structure erection.”

KSRC’s family includes his wife Saraswathi who is ahomemaker. The couple has two children. Elder son Dhananjay is an engineer who is settled and the second son is pursuinghis engineering degree course KSRC is a socially consciousperson and does his bit through a charitable trust log whichhe is a managing committee member.

Pushing over a lucrative offer in the research and development wing of aprestigious MNC, Mr. Arvind Kumar Limje (AKL) pursued his strong

penchant for renewable energy and sustainable technology. His green quest began in a small way and today he finds himself at the helm of India’s largest EPC solutions provider for solar power projects. Equipped with an M.Tech inEnergy Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay and a B.Tech in MechanicalEngineering from NIT Raipur, AKJ joined L&T Construction in February 2011.

His first major break was the 10 MW Millennium PV solar power plant at Dhama in Gujarat. Speaking on the project, AKL says “it was a first of its kind plant in Asia using Ideematec trackers. For me this was a great exposure and invaluable learning. A total of 1756 trackers were erected. The erectiondemanded high level of precision and adherence to tolerance limits of less than0.1 mm. Tracker cabling was another critical task as the excavation work wasclose to 95 km length running parallel to the tracker row. As a planningengineer the biggest challenge for me was to schedule the plan and incorporateall the activities. Since this was a first of its kind technology, we came up withmany innovative systems and procedures.”

AKL adds, “for civil works we established a lab for concrete testing. Theservice of BVQ agency was called for to monitor and guide over the quality issues. To develop a procedure for Ideematec structure erection, we deputed two potential engineers for getting trained in the erection process in Puducherry.

The major project activity was divided into parts and for each category there was an overall in-charge. The method of working helped us to progress on all fronts simultaneously and complete the task  within the scheduled time period.” AKL has moved on to his next solar project assignment which is a 125 MW CSP plant. As a planning engineer, this young professional has host of responsibilities and is in the thick of action. The opportunity isyet another new technology based on linear fresenel reflector and an invaluable learning for him.

An eligible bachelor, AKL’s family includes his parents and an elder brother and an elder sister. Reading and playing badminton

    are his fond hobbies.
