Erie Community College Style GuideGiven both the multifaceted nature of Erie Community College and the wide array of the college’s publications—utilizing print, Web and other visual media—it is important to maintain a strong, consistent visual presence for the college and create an integrated look and feel to ECC publications.

The Style Guide is the college’s way of creating a strong, unified set of visual standards for representing ECC’s multiple departments, programs and offices. By setting standards for all uses of school colors, fonts, logos and the official college seal—and thus influencing everything from campus signs to high-tech digital media—the guide creates a visual identity that unites the college community. This visual identity gives our institution a familiar and welcoming public presence, immediately recognizable to the many people we serve, while enabling ECC’s departments and other units to communicate their unique identities within the overall Erie Community College brand.

Elements of the Visual IdentityThe Erie Community College visual identity comprises the different versions of the college’s name, fonts, logo, colors and the college seal. For each of these elements, acceptable practices of presentation are outlined in this guide. The names, logos, colors and seals in this guide are the only ones that may be used for communications in print or electronic form and on other materials. If you have questions or would like to request an exception to the approved usage presented in this guide, please contact the Public Relations Office.

Official College SealThe official college seal is reserved for formal uses, such as authenticating diplomas, transcripts and other official documents. It is not to be used for any other purposes. Any questions about the appropriate use of the official college seal should be referred to the Public Relations Office.

DescriptionThe official college seal is a circular plaque, with “Erie Community College” surrounding an inner triangle, a timeless symbol of strength and stability. On the inner triangle is the original ECC logo, signifying the college’s adaptability and ability to re-invent itself with the changing times and technology.

Official College LogoThe official college logo is comprised of the State University of New York acronym SUNY running along the side of the lowercase letter acronym ECC. The lower case letters where chosen to represent a more personable approach to education, while the block sans sarif writing is a symbol of technology, advancement and strength. Together they create a cohesive unit geared toward achievement and success.

College NamesThere are three acceptable nomenclature options for our college:

1. Erie Community College, State University of New York. This is our full, most formal name; it is used on all communications intended for national audiences.

2. Erie Community College. This is our less formal name, and it may be used to communicate internally and with external groups who are familiar with our college and its stature within the State University of New York system.

3. ECC. This is our most informal name; it is our preferred casual name.

Please see the ECC Editorial Style Guide for more indepth explinations and procedures on how the college name should appear, what is acceptable, as well as other standards for writing.

Official College Signature LogoThe Erie Community College signature combines the merged ECC logo with supporting typography (also known as a logotype) creating the keystone of ECC’s visual identity.

The combination of these elements makes the identification of our college striking, dramatic and immediate. The merged lower case letters ecc are hand-drawn and are therefore unique from commercially available fonts. The bold ECC logo, sarif font (Minion Pro) and sans sarif font Helvetica Neue used in the logotype work together to blend modern and traditional images. The weight of the bold lettering used in our logo and logotype emphasize our Erie Community College name; using lower case is a welcoming, more inviting modern touch. The delicate sarif font dignifies our stature within the State University of New York system.

Signature Variations & What not to do

What not to do with the ECC logoThe logo must not be altered in any way and should always be used in the proportion and configuration shown. Reproportioning or rotating the logo within the logo, or including it as part of a larger image, diminishes visual impact and undermines the goal of creating a strong image. If you have any questions or concerns about what is acceptable and what is not please contact the Public Relations Department.

Unit Signature LogosA unit logo is a way of adapting the ECC signature to fit the needs of a particular office or department. Unit logos conform to and support the overall college signature and therefore promote the Erie Community College brand. At the same time, however, they promote a clear, prominent and recognizable identity for each particular unit or department.

Unit logos are available for use by departments and other units, at the discretion of the appropriate college officer (associate vice president, dean, chair, etc.).

The dominant feature of the identity is the merged ECC logo—it is seen first, and it is the image that stays the longest in the mind’s eye, establishing the unique identity of each respective department. The unit name is displayed at the upper right of the merged ECC logo. Our formal name—Erie Community College—completes the identity and is located directly beneath the department name, creating the ECC Departmental Unit Signature logo.

Fonts

Official FontsHelvetica Neue and Minion Pro are the official college font families and are used in our signature logo’s supporting typography.

Neither Helvetica Neue nor Minion Pro is bundled with standard Microsoft Office systems. When producing print materials using software programs such as MS Word, substitute Garamond or Times New Roman for Minion Pro, and substitute Arial or Helvetica for Helvetica Neue. When working with commercial printing companies and design firms, request the use of our official college fonts.
