Departmental News

• Search Underway for New Department Head– After 10 years of service as Head, Dr. Marshall Molen

became first Ergon Distinguished Professor in September 2002

– Dr. Harden selected to be Interim Head and a search committee formed

– New Head not selected, as yet

Departmental News

• Undergraduate Enrollment (Fall 2003)– 1,948 Bagley College of Engineering Undergraduates– 417 ECE Undergrads (21% for the 10 Engineering Majors, ECE

FTF ACT Composite 26.6 in 2002)• 207 EEs• 210 CPEs

• Graduate Enrollment (Fall 2003) – 545 Bagley College of Engineering Undergraduates– 168 ECE Graduate Students (31% of Engineering grade students)

• 129 EEs• 39 CPEs

Departmental NewsStrategic Planning 2003-2008

• Undergraduate Program - Innovation in education, retention, recruitment, and assessment

• Graduate Program - Increasing number of Ph.D. graduates

• Curricula - Comprehensive review with program constituent inputs and evaluation of peer and emulate group programs

• Facilities - Improving electronic delivery and increasing space

Pitfalls to Avoid

• Academic Misconduct– 2001-2002 COE represents 44% or 64/144 of

cases filed with the Dean of Students (there are eight colleges and schools)

– Since 1994 it has been 40%– Engineering faculty take cheating seriously,

enforce the rules, and file misconduct forms

Pitfalls to Avoid• Computer Resources Misuse

– ITS and ECE System administrators routinely track misuse

– Students are responsible for all actions on their accounts. • No-No’s

– Do not spam others.– Do not lock a computer screen in the labs – ECE computers and resources are not to be used for

personal gain.– Do not use ECE computers to download copyrighted

material for the purpose of piracy (mp3s. Movies, etc.)– Do not use ECE computers and resources to download or

store pornographic material.

Pitfalls to Avoid

• Misuse of Facilities

– Obey rules on smoking, food and drink

– Only allow persons entry who have valid ECE access

– Failure will mean loss of access

• Take part in maintaining our resources

– Keep the student lounge in order (use trash can, reshelf books and magazines)

– Take care of equipment

convey exact meaning. Good written and oral communications skills

• Forward Looking - able to see trends in technology and project their effect on future designs and ways of approaching their job

• Hardworking - a responsible individual with a commitment to making things happen even under unexpected circumstances. Not prone to making excuses
