2011 Echelon Events – What you need to know:Echelon produces cycling events that are of a different f lavor—a new-fangled festive series in which the experience stirs the senses, and where we guarantee you an event that will be the highlight of your cycling season.

While you may have heard the Italian term Gran Fondo or “Big Ride”, our series takes the European cycling experience to

a new level. At an Echelon event, expect announcers, over-the-road banners, cheerleaders, helicopters, live music, super-quality rest stops, and a cast of characters that you might see on Alpe d’Huez. Our hill climbs are timed, and some with partial road closures. Like an echelon formation should, all of our riders start together with a police escorted promenade though town, making all participants feel like pampered riders at a grand tour.

Echelon is not your father’s century ride. While we do line up a few fast riders on the front, we welcome all rider types and will spoil you with some great on course support and really, really good food and entertainment—before, during and after our post event festivals.

We are the only gran fondo series that gives its participants the option to fundraise or just simply just pay a registration fee in which a portion of all proceeds will benefit our partner beneficiaries.

Tucson Challenge and Gran FondoMay 1st, 2011

Tucson Gran FondoOur Tucson Echelon Gran Fondo begins with a ceremonial start from the University of Arizona campus with a full 15 mile moderately paced police escort to the base of Mt. Lemmon—it is there where your personal challenge begins. Keep pedaling, as the course will go from the desert f loor and climb 5,000 feet to the summit. This specially timed climb weaves through a plethora of rock formations, cacti, pine trees and stunning views of the Sonoran desert. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to be a part of the first organized ride in years going up Mt. Lemmon.

Ride the Tucson Challenge The Tucson Challenge is a closed 1 ½ mile circuit course that stays open for 12 hours while your friends are out on the gran fondo course. Anything goes—all non motorized vehicles welcome—road bikes, mountain bikes, beach cruisers. Three rock bands are positioned on the University of Arizona Campus for this party atmosphere on wheels. In this lapathon event, the more you ride, the more you raise!

After a 15 mile casual warm up, the 5,000 feet timed climb begins up Mt. Lemmon. While the course is not super steep, it is 21 miles long but you can turn around at any time to shorten the ride.

to the Pacific coast. Upon hitting the coast, riders will pass a lighthouse, jagged coastal cliffs and untouched wetlands. After this epic coastal encounter, get ready as the ride heads up the infamous Tunitas Creek road.
