Always use both hands on the handles. Do not operateone-handed.

Always hold the unit with the fingers and thumbs encirclingthe handles.

• Keep your body warm, especially the head and neck, feet and ankles, and hands and wrists.

• Maintain good blood circulation by performing vigorousarm exercises during frequent work breaks, and also bynot smoking.

• Limit the number of hours of operation. Try to fill each daywith jobs where operating the trimmer or other hand-heldpower equipment is not required.

• If you experience discomfort redness and swelling of thefingers, followed by whitening and loss of feeling, consultyour physician before exposing yourself further to coldand vibration.

VIBRATION AND COLD

It is believed that a condition called Raynaud’s Phenom-enon which affects the fingers of certain individuals may bebrought about by exposure to vibration and cold. Exposureto vibration and cold may cause tingling and burning, followed by loss of colour and numbness in the fingers.

The following precautions are strongly recommendedbecause the minimum exposure which might trigger theailment is unknown.

Painful or numbfingers?See your doctorimmediatelty!

REPETITIVE STRESS INJURIES

It is believed that over-using the muscles and tendons ofthe fingers, hands, arms and shoulders may causesoreness, swelling, numbness, weakness and extremepain to the areas just mentioned. Certain repetitive handactivities may put you at a high risk for developing arepetitive stress injury (RSI).

To reduce the risk of RSI, do the following:

• Avoid using your wrist in a bent, extended or twistedposition.

• Take periodic breaks to minimize repetition and rest yourhands. Reduce the speed and force in which you do therepetitive movement.

• Do exercises to strengthen hand and arm muscles.

• See a doctor if you feel tingling, numbness or pain in yourfingers, hands, wrists or arms. The sooner RSI isdiagnosed, the more likely permanent nerve and muscledamage can be prevented.

Do not operate one-handed

For nearly all cutting, it is good to tilt the nylon cutter so thatcontact is made on the part of line circle where the line ismoving away from you and the shield (See appropriatepicture). This results in the debris being thrown away fromyou.

Tilting the head to the wrong side will shoot the debristoward you. If the nylon line cutter is held flat to the groundso that cutting occurs on the whole line circle, debris will bethrown at you, drag will slow the engine, and you will useup a lot of line.

WARNINGUSE ONLY FLEXIBLE, NON-METALLIC LINERECOMMENDED BY KIORITZ CORPORATION.

Nylon line head rotatesclockwise. The knife will be on the rightside of the shield.

Debris

Cut on this side

The basic cutting actions pictured are:Trimming, scything, scalping and lawn edging. These actions are as follows:

TRIMMING: This is feeding the trimmer carefully into thematerial you wish to cut. Tilt the head slightly to direct thedebris away from you. If cutting up to a barrier such as afence, wall or tree, approach from an angle where anydebris ricocheting off the barrier will fly away from you.

Move the line head slowly until the grass is cut right up tothe barrier, but do not jam (overfeed) the line into thebarrier. If trimming up to wire mesh or chain link fencing, becareful to feed only up to the wire. If you go too far, the linewill snap off around the wire.

Trimming can be done to cut through weed stems one at atime. Place the nylon line cutter near the bottom of theweed never high up, which could cause the weed to chatterand catch the line. Rather than cut the weed right through, just use the very end of the line to wear through the stemslowly.

Angle to groundAngle to wall

Debris

Knife side raised

Scalping Edging

ScythingSCYTHING: This is the cutting or mowing of large grassyareas by sweeping or swinging the trimmer in a level arc.Use a smooth, easy motion. Do not try to hack or chopdown the grass. Tilt the line head to direct the debris awayfrom you on the scything stroke. Then return withoutcutting grass for another stroke. If you are well protectedand do not care whether some debris is thrown in yourdirection, you may scythe in both directions.

SCALPING AND EDGING: Both of these are done with theline head tilted at a steep angle. Scalping is removing topgrowth, leaving the earth bare. Edging is trimming thegrass back where it has spread over a pavement ordriveway. During both edging and scalping, hold the unit ata steep angle in a position where the debris, and anydislodged dirt and stone, will not come back towards youeven if it ricochets off the hard surface.Although the pictures show how to edge and scalp, everyoperator must find for himself the angles which suit hisbody size and cutting situation.

Always wear proper eye protection against thrown objects.Objects can bounce up at you from the ground under theshield, or ricochet off any nearby hard surface.

Do not trim at high speed near roadways when there istraffic, or in places where there are pedestrians. If you musttrim where people are in the zone of risk use a much loweror reduced speed, by using a partial trigger setting. Do notuse full throttle.

Do not push the line into tough weeds, trees, or wirefences. Pushing the line into chicken wire, chain linkfencing or thick brush can result in snapped-off line endsbeing hurled back at the operator. The proper way is to cutright up to a barrier, such as any of those mentioned, butnever run the line into or through the obstruction. Do not cutclosely to obstruction or barrier.

DANGERALWAYS STOP THE ENGINE WHEN A CUTTINGATTACHMENT JAM OCCURS. DO NOT ATTEMPTTO REMOVE AN OBJECT CAUSING A JAM IF THEENGINE IS RUNNING. INJURY CAN OCCUR IF AJAM IS REMOVED AND THE CUTTINGATTACHMENT SUDDENLY STARTS.

Avoid nylon line contact with broken wire fencing. Piecesof wire broken off by the trimmer can be hurled at highspeeds.

WARNINGDO NOT TRIM IN ANY AREA WHERE THERE AREBROKEN STRANDS OF FENCING WIRE. REMOVETHE BROKEN PIECES OF WIRE, OR GIVE THEAREA WIDE BERTH. WEAR PROPER SAFETYPROTECTION. DO NOT CUT WHERE YOUCANNOT SEE WHAT THE CUTTING DEVICE ISCUTTING.

COOLING SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

IMPORTANTTo maintain proper engine operating temperature, cooling air must pass freely through the cylinderfin area. This flow of air carries combustion heataway from the engine.

Overheating and engine seizure can occur when:

• Air intakes are blocked, preventing cooling airfrom reaching the cylinder,

or

• Dust and grass build up on the out side of thecylinder. This build-up insulates the engine andprevents the heat from leaving.

Removal of cooling passage blockages orcleaning of cylinder fins is considered “NormalMaintenance”. Any resultant failure attributed tolack of maintenance is not warranted.

• Remove dust and dirt from between fins.

• Before each use, remove accumulated debris from bottomengine intake grille located between the fuel tank andstarter.

CHECK SPARK PLUG

• Check plug gap. Correct gap is 0.6 to 0.7 mm.

• Inspect electrode for wear.

• Inspect insulator for oil or other deposits.

• Replace plug if needed and tighten to 15 - 17 N•m (150to 170 kgf•cm).
