PARENTS’ CORNER

TIPS FOR PARENTS HELPING THEIR TEENS WITH HOMEWORK AND STUDY HABITS

Turn off the TV set. Make a house rule, depending on the location of the set, that when it is study time, it is “no TV” time. A television set that is on will draw youngsters like bees to honey. Designate specific areas for homework and studying. Possibilities include the child’s room or the kitchen or dining room table. Eliminate as much distraction as possible. Since many young people will study in their own rooms, function becomes more important than beauty. Encourage the use of a small book or pad for writing down assignments so that there is no confusion about when certain assignments must be turned in to the teacher. Keeping general supplies on hand is impor-tant. Check with your child about his needs. In fact, make it his responsibility to be well supplied with paper, pencils, note pads, notebook paper, et cetera. Regularity is a key factor in academic success. Try to organize the household so that supper is served at a standard time, and once it and family discussions are over, it’s time to crack the books. If the student doesn’t have other commitments and gets home reasonably early from school, some homework can be done before supper. Note-taking is a critical skill and should be developed. Many students don’t know how to take notes in those classes that require them. Some feel they have to write down every word the teacher says. Others have wisely realized the value of an outline form of note-taking. Help your child to feel confident for tests. Taking tests can be a traumatic experience for some students. Explain to your child that burning the midnight oil (cramming) the night before a test is not productive. Better to get a good night’s sleep. Students also need reminding that when taking a test, they should thoroughly and carefully read the directions before they haphazardly start to mark their test papers. They should be advised to skip over questions for which they don’t know the answers. They can always return to those if there’s time. Good advice for any student before taking a test: take a deep breath, relax, and dive in. Always bring an extra pencil just in case. Should parents help with homework? Yes-if it is clearly productive to do so, such as calling out spelling words or checking a math problem that won’t prove. No-if it is something the child can clearly handle himself and learn from the process. And help and support should always be calmly and cheerfully given. Grudging help is worse than no help at all! Read directions, or check over math problems after your child has completed the work. Remember to make positive comments – you don’t want your child to associate homework with fights at home. Model research skills by involving your child in planning a family trip. Help your child locate your destination on a map or atlas. Use traditional encyclopedia or a CD-ROM to find information about the place you will visit; try the Internet or books in the library.

LET'S DO IT ANYWAY When life is full of sufferings and hardships, you might be depressed. Let's just live life anyway. When you are happy, people may be jealous. Let's just be happy anyway. When you are kind, you might be accused of selfish motives. Let's just be kind anyway. When you are honest, some people may cheat you. Let's just be honest anyway. When you trust others, you might be betrayed. Let's just trust others anyway. When you succeed, you win false friends and true enemies. Let's just succeed anyway. When people are unreasonable and selfish, you might be hurt. Let's just forgive them anyway. When you've built for years, someone might destroy it overnight. Let's just build on anyway. When people make mistakes, you might have to suffer. Let's give them a second chance anyway. When you do something good today, it might be forgotten tomorrow. Let's just do good anyway. When people realize their mistakes and apologize for it, May be it's time to forgive them anyway. When you give your best, it might not seem enough. Let's give our best anyway. You see, the final analysis is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. By: Viraj Rajendra Sanap

TEACHERS’ CORNER HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE STUDENTS

The key to becoming an effective student is learning how to study smarter, not harder. An hour or two of studying a day is usually sufficient to make it through high school with satisfactory grades, but when college arrives, there aren't enough hours in the day to get all your studying in if you don't know how to study smarter. While some students are able to breeze through school with minimal effort, this is the exception. The vast majority of successful students achieve their success by developing and applying effective study habits. The following are the top 10 study habits employed by highly successful students. So if you want to become a successful student, don't get discouraged, don't give up, just work to develop each of the study habits below and you'll see your grades go up, your knowledge increase, and your ability to learn and assimilate information improve. 1. Don't attempt to cram your subject/study notes Ever find yourself up late at night expending more energy trying to keep your eyelids open than you are studying? If so, it's time for a change. Successful students typically space their work out over shorter periods of time and rarely try to cram all of their studying into just one or two ses-sions. If you want to become a successful student then you need to learn to be consistent in your studies and to have regular, yet shorter, study periods. 2. Plan when you're going to study Successful students schedule specific times throughout the week when they are going to study -- and then they stick with their schedule. Students who study sporadically and whimsically typical-ly do not perform as well as students who have a set study schedule. Even if you're all caught up with your studies, creating a weekly routine, where you set aside a period of time a few days a week, to review your courses will ensure you develop habits that will enable you to succeed in your education long term. 3. Study at the same time Not only is it important that you plan when you're going to study, it's important you create a consistent, daily study routine. When you study at the same time each day and each week, you're studying will become a regular part of your life. You'll be mentally and emotionally more pre-pared for each study session and each study session will become more productive. If you have to change your schedule from time to time due to unexpected events, that's okay, but get back on your routine as soon as the event has passed. 4. Each study time should have a specific goal Simply studying without direction is not effective. You need to know exactly what you need to accomplish during each study session. Before you start studying, set a study session goal that supports your overall academic goal (i.e. memorize 30 vocabulary words in order to ace the vocabulary section on an upcoming Spanish test.) 5. Never procrastinate your planned study session It's very easy, and common, to put off your study session because of lack of interest in the subject, because you have other things you need to get done, or just because the assignment is hard. Successful students DO NOT procrastinate studying. If you procrastinate your study session, your studying will become much less effective and you may not get everything accomplished that you

Page 8: ECHO - Laxmi€¦ · To boost the development, the world strives for creative thinkers and ... Therefore, clear goals, self-confidence, creative ideas, and learning approach are the

LAXMI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OCT- NOV 2016 8

need to. Procrastination also leads to rushing, and rushing is the number one cause of errors. 6. Start with the most difficult subject first As your most difficult assignment or subject will require the most effort and mental energy, you should start with it first. Once you've completed the most difficult work, it will be much easier to complete the rest of your work. Believe it or not, starting with the most difficult subject will greatly improve the effectiveness of your study sessions, and your academic performance. 7. Always review your notes before starting an assignment Obviously, before you can review your notes you must first have notes to review. Always make sure to take good notes in class. Before you start each study session, and before you start a particu-lar assignment, review your notes thoroughly to make sure you know how to complete the as-signment correctly. Reviewing your notes before each study session will help you remember important subject matter learned during the day, and make sure studying targeted and effective. 8. Make sure you're not distracted while you're studying Everyone gets distracted by something. Maybe it's the TV. Or your family. Or maybe it's too quite. Some people actually study better with a little background noise. Before you start studying find a place where you won't be disturbed or distracted. Some people this is a quite cubical in the re-cesses of the library. 9. Use study groups effectively Ever heard the phrase "two heads are better than one"? Well this can be especially true when it comes to studying. Working in groups enables you to (1) get help from others when you're strug-gling to understand a concept, (2) complete assignments more quickly, and (3) teach others whe-reby helping both the other students and yourselves to internalize the subject matter. However, study groups can become very ineffective if they're not structured and if groups members come unprepared. Effective students use study groups effectively. 10. Review your notes, schoolwork and other class materials over the weekend Successful students review what they've learned during the week over the weekend. This way they're well prepared to continue learning new concepts that build upon previous coursework and knowledge acquired the previous week. I am confident that if you'll develop the habits outlined above that you'll see a major improvement in your academic success. All the Best!!!

GLIMPSE IN THE LIFE OF A TEACHER

Once a teacher always a teacher. The one who is born under lucky stars and is favoured by fortune gets the privilege to become a teacher. Teaching profession may not be the one which gives you lots of monetary benefits however the mental satisfaction it gives is immense. Mental satisfaction because you mould the life of innocent minds and lead them to the path of success. As rightly said by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said, “A teacher is a beacon light that acts as a lighthouse to guide the stranded students in the sea of life.” A teacher plays a variety of roles. To be a successful and much loved teacher, one should be versatile, multifaceted and multi-talented. A teacher is a guru who shares his/ her wisdom and knowledge with students and tries to smoothen their path of progress. A teacher is a second parent who nurtures and nourishes the tender minds of the students with love and affection. A teacher is an actor who sometimes does acting in class to catch the eye of his/her pupil. A teacher is a friend in whom the student confides his/her secrets, fears, ambition. A teacher is a guide who mentors the students at each stage of life. A teacher has to be a judge settling the bickering and quarrel of students. A teacher is a sculptor who sculpts her pupils in the right shape. The job entails lot of responsibilities as teachers are the architects of a nation. Everyday a teacher deals with young minds of children and it is the responsibility of the teacher to handle the stu-dents such a manner that he/she does not cause any harm knowingly or unknowingly to their delicate minds and hearts. Just like a gardener tends to his garden with love and care, so is the role of a teacher. Each child is a tender bud waiting to blossom under the love and able guidance of the teacher. When the buds bloom and blossom the teacher’s joy and happiness is boundless. The satisfaction the job gives is incomparable. Teaching is the profession which teaches other profes-sions. The teacher is so engrossed in shaping the young minds that she forgets her own worries and tensions. A dedicated teacher is a nation’s treasure. So I take this opportunity to salute all my teachers and my dear students past and present for enriching my life. By: Mrs. Monaz Zaiwalla

“An Owe Aspiring Rising Star of LIS” Henil Pranav Bhavsar - Class 8 C

I have been to Las Vegas, USA, from 5th November to 17th November 2016. I went

there with my team that is from Genius Kids. We went there in a group of 24 students

and 5 supporting teachers. We had our competition there in Vegas on 8th, 9th and 10th

of November. It was a competition of Mental Math and Memory championship in West-

ern Hotel of Las Vegas. 1st day we had Opening Ceremony and my main subjects that’s-

Speed Card, Mental Multiplication, Names and Faces and Square Root. I met the

memory giants. They were – Hakan Gurbaslar , Yusnier Viera , Jan Van Koningsveld ,

Woon Chieng Wong , Nodas Boukovalas , Alex Mullen , Simon Reinhard , Johannes

Mallow , Christian Schafer and many more. The first day I was a bit nervous because

it was my first attempt in these types of International Competitions. The competition

hall was very well organised with a comfortable table and laptop and a name tag of the

particular candidate with his or her country’s flag and memoriad flag on it. Then the

second day we had Mental Additions, Mental Calendar Dates and Binary Digits. The

next day I was familiar with the hall and its situation. And the last day we had Mental

Division and Flash Numbers. We also went to Universal Studio, Disney Land, Grand

Canyon and many other places in USA. The experience was full of new learning.

WELLNESS TODAY

Don't skip breakfast. It’s called the most important meal of the day for a reason. Would you start your car without any fuel? No, so why start your day that way? Ideally, your breakfast will in-clude some protein: eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, nut butters, and whole grain carbs should do the trick

. Stack up on snacks. If you keep healthy snacks on hand, you will better equipped to avoid the high fat/sugar temptations. (Some of my favourites are KIND nut and spice bars, individual squeeze packets of almond and peanut butter, fruit leathers, and raw nuts.) Look for items with less than 10 gram of sugar and more than 3 gram of fibre. Sneak fitness in. Sometimes hitting the gym is hard to fit into a busy college schedule, so make a plan to do outdoor activities with friends or join an intramural group Hydrate! Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink. Start first thing in the morning, and keep a bottle of water on you all day. It helps muscle tone, skin, weight maintenance, and more.

Eat small, frequent meals. This can be as simple as eating half a sandwich for lunch and the other

half a few hours later. Or having a yogurt for breakfast and putting a healthy cereal in a baggie or

some raw nuts for a mid-morning snack.

Sleep. Major for health! You release hormones when you are in a deep sleep that helps to maintain

a healthy weight. Deprivation can lead to disaster!

QUICK TIPS

TIPS TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS

Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviours as well as intel-lectual capacity.

Successful students . . .

1. . . . are responsible and active.

Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it! Responsibility is the difference between leading and being led. Active classroom participation improves grades without increasing study time. You can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting.

2. . . . have educational goals.

Successful students are motivated by what their goals represent in terms of career aspirations and life's desires. Ask yourself these questions: What am I doing here? Is there some better place I could be? What does my presence here mean to me? Answers to these questions represent your "Hot Buttons" and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If your educational goals are truly yours, not someone else's, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a student, nothing can stop you; if you aren't and don't, everything can, and will!

3. . . . ask questions.

Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and know-ledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely impor-tant benefits. The process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. It's your choice.

4. . . . learn that a student and a professor make a team.

Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade. Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not an enemy, you share the same interests, the same goals - in short, you're teammates. Get to know your professor. You're the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

5. . . . take good notes.

Page 13: ECHO - Laxmi€¦ · To boost the development, the world strives for creative thinkers and ... Therefore, clear goals, self-confidence, creative ideas, and learning approach are the

LAXMI INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OCT- NOV 2016 13

Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often. Why put something into your notes you don't understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make your notes meaningful at some later time. A short review of your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps your learn more. The more you learn then, the less you'll have to learn later and the less time it will take because you won't have to include some deciphering time, also. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them, and use them often. The more you use them, the more they improve.

6. . . . understand that actions affect learning.

Successful students know their personal behaviour affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning. If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like you're bored, and you'll become bored. Act like you're uninte-rested, and you'll become uninterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom, "act" like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes, and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic.

7. . . . talk about what they're learning.

Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words. Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know some-thing, its a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory. You really don't "know" material until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don't do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend you're teaching your peers. "Talk-learning" produces a whole host of memory traces that result in more learning.

8. . . . don't cram for exams.

Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it. If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distributed study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You'll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions for Friday's exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Short, concentrated preparatory efforts are more efficient and rewarding than wasteful, inattentive, last moment marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?

9. . . . are good time managers.

Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life. An elemental truth: you will either control time or be controlled by it! It's your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. 1 study skills problem for college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non-students! Procrastinators are good excuse-makers. Don't make academics harder on yourself than it has to be. Stop procrastinating. And don't wait until tomorrow to do it!
