year!we!continue!to!see!improvement!in!reporting.!In!2014,!United!Methodist!
Women!had!60%!of!the!conferences!reportingd!in!2015,!we!had!an!increase!
to!89%!of!the!conferences!reporting.!We!hope!that!with!improved!
communication,!helpful!new!instructional!videos,!and!improved!online!

In!October,!the!Embry!Hills!UMW!sponsored!a!Paint!It!Forward!event.!The!painting!session!was!
guided!by!two!awesome!ladies!from!Caring!Canvases.!!Fifteen!women!and!girls!painted!canvases!
that!were!donated!to!Breakthru!House,!where!they!will!hang!in!a!large!cottage!that!had!no!artwork.!
This!day!was!a!blessing!for!all!who!attended.!Being!together,!creating!art!to!bring!joy!and!hope!to!
the!women!of!Breakthru!House!was!amazing!!If!you!think!your!group!might!be!interested,!we!are!

On!Saturday!December!3,!the!United!Methodist!Women!of!Duluth!First!Methodist!hosted!and!
participated!in!a!delightful!Christmas!brunch.!The!busy!UMW!elves!were!as!busy!as!Santa’s!elves!
making!arrangements,!buying!and!preparing!food,!decorating!our!Fellowship!Hall,!and!planning!
and!rehearsing!music!and!narratives.!Our!brunch!planning!committee!headed!by!Sue!French!and!
Jenny!Masterson!had!met!several!times!to!finalize!our!“Light!of!the!World”!program!celebrating!the!
coming!of!Jesus!Christ,!and!his!gifts!of!light,!hope,!joy,!and!love.!Cathy!Haas!provided!Christmas!
piano!music!as!the!guests!gathered!for!the!brunch,!and!our!Senior!Pastor!Reverend!Terry!
Tippens,!with!his!wife!Missy!nearby,!opened!our!brunch!with!a!prayer.!Chancel!Choir!member!
Kristen!Shappert!and!her!daughters!Marin!(12)!and!Clare!(8)!sang!“Mary!Did!You!Know”!for!the!
guests!gathered,!and!their!trio!of!voices!were!so!beautiful.!We!then!had!our!delicious!brunch!of!
breakfast!bagels,!breads,!spinach!quiche!with!bacon,!cheesy!potatoes!with!ham,!and!fresh!fruit.!!
The!coffee!pot!never!stopped!percolating!!We!had!approximately!90!women!in!attendance.!The!
Fellowship!Hall!was!decorated!for!Christmas!in!a!beautiful!and!happy!show!of!Christmas!lanterns!
everywhere,!to!celebrate!Jesus!as!“The!Light!of!the!World.”!We!had!wreaths,!greenery,!and!fresh!
holly!and!magnolia!leaves!on!each!table,!surrounding!the!lanterns.!Cathy’s!Jim!Shore!nativity!with!
a!flying!Angel!of!the!Lord,!and!Wise!men!with!their!gifts,!was!on!the!stage.!!After!brunch,!we!
opened!our!Christmas!program!by!singing!“Adeste!Fideles”!and!Silent!Night.”!Our!readers!read!
select!Bible!verses!of!the!Christmas!Story,!and!we!sang!carols!between!readings.!The!Shappert!
ladies!sang!“Angels!We!Have!Heard!on!High,”!and!their!“Glorias”!in!the!refrain!were!truly!angelic!!!
Our!Spiritual!Growth!Coordinator!Jenny!Masterson!gave!the!last!reading,!which!Jenny!had!written,!
and!it!was!a!beautiful!meditation!on!Christ!as!the!Light!of!the!World.!We!closed!the!program!with!a!

Our!first!big!event!for!our!new!local!unit!was!a!Tea!Party!to!raise!money!for!our!three!Guatemalan!
scholarship!students.!The!tables!were!set!exquisitely!with!teapots,!beautiful!china,!and!
centerpieces.!It!was!great!fun,!and!with!great!success!we!raised!more!than!$1,000.!We!even!had!a!
little!girls’!table.!Helping!us!to!raise!the!proceeds!was!the!“auctioning!off”!of!an!American!Girl!Bitty!
Baby!complete!with!wardrobe!and!cradle!created!and!provided!by!our!Social!Action!chair!Chris!
Dauer.!

At!our!October!Quarterly!meeting!we!fortunate!to!hear!the!history!behind!the!new!CEB*Women’s*Bible!and!how!it!is!organized,!presented!to!us!by!Dr.!Beth!Corrie,!who!wrote!some!of!the!side!articles!for!it.!We!were!each!given!“The!Letter!to!Ephesians”!from!this!new!Bible.!One!interesting!
fact!about!this!new!Bible!is!that!every!woman!mentioned!in!the!Bible!(both!named!and!unnamed)!
is!indexed.!This!might!be!a!very!special!holiday!gift!for!a!woman!in!your!life.!
