INSECTS (INSECTA)

Mosquitoes can transmit disease organisms to people and

domestic animals. Most mosquitoes are active during twilight hours and at night. However, around the home, the mosqui-

toes that breed in discarded containers and standing water are active during the day. Mosquitoes need water to complete their life cycle and can breed in almost any source of water.

The Wood Wasp a native to Europe, Asia and

northern Africa is rarely a pest. They kill pine trees and sometimes several other types of conifer trees by introduc-ing a toxic mucus and spores of a toxic fungus when the female lays her eggs through the bark and into the sapwood of the tree.

Flies carry diarrhea illnesses and germs and bacteria from con-

taminated sites to clean sites and food. Female flies may lay up to 150 eggs at one time.

Black Ants are a common household pest. They are so-

cial insects whose colonies can be found indoors and out. Some are attracted to sweets and some are attracted to animal proteins or plant proteins.

Red Fire Ants are a very aggressive, invasive and social

species of ants that bite, sting and swarm. The stingers are full of a necrotizing alkaloid venom that causes red itchy inflamed pimple - like bumps to form on the skin. These ants all sting

in unison causing major skin damage when they are accidentally provoked. Fire ants also destroy crops, pollinating bee populations and even some bird species are threatened by them.

American Cockroach adults have wings and will

occasionally fly. However, they are awkward fliers and prefer to run when disturbed. Cockroaches have been shown experimentally to transport a number of pathogenic bacteria and viruses on their legs and bodies. They have been found to carry the pathogens that cause tuberculosis, cholera, leprosy, dysentery, and ty-phoid, as well as over 40 other bacteria (like salmonella) or viruses that can cause disease. Thus, cockroaches, through their nocturnal feeding habits, rep-resent a serious potential health problem. Their presence should be elimi-nated or diminished in dwellings and food establishments.

FUMIGATION

SEA CARGO, FREIGHT TRUCKS, AIR CARGO CONTROL:

Use Bio Block® Organic Pest Control to fumigate Trucks Trailers, Air Cargo Holds and Sea Cargo Containers. Eco-Shield® Organic Pest Con-trol, our non-phytotoxic product, should be used in vehicles and cargo beds carrying produce and other food products. HOMS products will kill foreign pests before they can travel to new areas and prevent an infestation and keep venomous or disease-carrying pests from harming food sources and human populations. HOMS products are non-toxic to aquatic and marine life and are biodegrad-able. During indoor application, in order to avoid a possible allergic reaction, dwellings should be empty, but habitants can safely return after product has been released. HOMS products do not leave a toxic or harmful residue and are safe around pets. Our Bio Block® products are available in aerosols, total and partial release and in liquid form via 5 gallon pails, 55 gallon drums, or 265 gallon totes.

MUNICIPALITIES CONTROL:

BiteBlocker® BioUd® tick and mosquito control products are registered with the EPA and safe for use as a tick, mosquito, black fly, or other pest that are controlled by thermal or ULV fogging.

HOMS also offers BioUd® in bio-diesel instead of petro diesel. HOMS products are biodegradable and break down into beneficial nutrients for the ecosystem. They are safe for the environment, humans, pets and livestock. They will not harm aquatic life, in rivers or streams and in fact, the oils rise to the top of the water and act as a larvacide.

FOGGING

Traditionally, municipalities use Malathion or Permethrin (Kontron 44) in their ULV fogging applications. Malathion itself is a low toxin, but ab-sorption or ingestion by humans metabolizes into Malaoxon which is more toxic. Permethrin is extremely toxic to cats and aquatic life and both products are harmful to our rivers, lakes and streams.

Bed Bugs There are actually several species of "bed bugs"

but the species found most commonly in the U.S. is Cimex lectularius. They are very tough to eliminate when they have invaded someone’s home.

Black Widow Spiders are venomous spiders found in places that are

not frequented. Such as: under your house, a closet, gutters, well pump cov-ers and anywhere you’re going to reach without thinking.

Brown Recluse Spiders are equally venomous,

causing tissue death in the area around the bite. Both spi-ders usually bite when accidentally provoked such as in-side of shoes, fabrics or when tangled in webs under houses.

Wolf Spiders are similar to brown recluse spiders which are poisonous.

They usually live in dark areas and are active feeders.

Silverfish are primitive insects who prefer to live in places that are dark

and humid. Although they are generally harmless to humans they can con-taminate food and destroy books. The female deposits clusters of her eggs in cracks or crevices. They can live up to eight years.

Control: Bio Block® Organic Pest Control concentrate in a spray, mist or fog application. Use in the same places you use any other pest control product for insect control. Do not use on plants, shrubs, lawns & gardens.

If the application requires use near landscaping, Eco-Shield® Organic Pest Control concentrate is recommended. For use on plants, shrubs, lawns & gardens.

Both products residual activity lasts for up to 30 days in good weather.

INSECTS (INSECTA)

Carpenter Bees burrow into wood, forming a series of

chambers, typically 6-8. Each chamber is provisioned with pollen (mixed with regurgitated nectar) then a single egg is laid and then capped with a disk of wood pulp. The chamber is sealed and the adult does not return. Adults have been reported to use abandoned tunnels and other cavities to store pollen before hibernation.

Termites are social insects, living in large colonies

and are very destructive to wooden structures in the south. Colonies include the queen, workers, soldiers and nasutes (individuals that squirt noxious goo from their nozzle-like heads.)

Four families of termites in the southern US are: Hodotermitidae, Kaloter-mitidae, Rhinotermitidae and Termitidae.

Control: Bio Block® Outdoor Pest Deterrent and Wood Protector re-pels pest for 30 days and re-conditions wood decks, chairs, docks and other wood structures. Bio Block® can be used in conjunction with an adjuvant to make the product last longer.

RODENTS & REPTILES

Mice spread disease as well as roaches and other in-

sects. They also carry many different kinds of parasites i.e. fleas and mites. Mice can also ruin crops and home food supplies.

Rats often cause electrical fires in buildings by gnawing through plastic electrical junction boxes. Rats must con-stantly gnaw on hard objects to cut back their constantly growing incisor teeth. In addition, they live in the most unsanitary places, and are carriers of serious health risks

to humans from their droppings and constant incontinence (they use urine trails to find their way in the dark.)

Squirrels are outdoor pests that carry parasites such as fleas, ticks and mites. They also can ruin home gar-dens and fruit trees. They can leave clutter in yards by shelling pinecones to get to the seeds deep inside of them. Squirrels build nests in chimneys, drain systems and attics.
