Dear Parents & Guardians,

We are nearing the end of the school year and once again, Mme Black and I feel so for-

tunate to be working in a community that is so supportive of students. We would like to

express our thanks to our PAC for on-going support of our school goals and activities

and to all the parents who have been in charge of school events during the year such as

Halloween Dance and Pancake Breakfast (Elizabeth Kearns and Myriah Foort), Santa’s

Workshop (Sarah Samson), Hot lunch (Sarah Samson and Sarah Derks), Milk and bulle-

tin boards (Jennifer Fagan), Fruit & Vegetable Program (Melissa Ross), Compost and

Garden (Ryan Neil), Bike to Work / School (Sophia Sauter), and Actijeux (Jill Fontaine

and Chris Fulton). Our thanks go to all the parents who helped in one way or another.

We are privileged to be working in a school where so many people volunteer. We hope

you are able to make it to our Family Appreciation Tea.

Rachel Black and I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the dedicat-

ed work of our staff, teachers, EA, Library clerk, Indigenous Support Worker, Secre-

tary and Custodians. This year, our goals were to look at a more meaningful way to look

at reading assessment, to explore the Community of Learners writing approach, and to

learn how to develop a strong learning community (we dedicated 4 days to the TRIBES

training). We also continued the implementation of the new BC curriculum and focused

on environmental education through our BC WILD program and on the Indigenous per-

spectives with the help of Shana Smith, our Support Worker and Danita Lewis, our In-

digenous culture Teacher.

It’s been a great year of learning for both students and staff. Please check our calen-

dar for the list of activities for the month of June. The last day of school for students

is June 28 and it is a half day. Students will be dismissed at 11:30 am. Hoping to see

you during the month of June!

Wishing you a wonderful summer! Louise Guèvremont & Rachel Black

BEACH DAY

Monday, June 25th will be our Miracle Beach Day. Please complete the permission slips

which will be sent home soon for each child and return them to the school. Students should

dress in layers and remember to pack sunscreen and wear a hat. The trip may be

cancelled if it is pouring rain.

Families are most welcome to meet us at the beach for the day, although you

must provide your own transportation.

Please Note: the PAC will not be providing a lunch for our students on this day, please en-

sure you send your child with a lunch, snack and drink.

Jump Rope For Heart

WOW — Good work everyone! Our students raised over $ 8000.00 this year!

Prizes will be handed out later this month.

Thanks to everyone who took part and especially Mme Halliday who coordinated

the event!

School Supplies for NEXT YEAR

We will once again purchase supplies in bulk . Purchasing in this manner provides all stu-

dents with the same quality supplies, it also allows the teachers to tailor the supplies to meet

their individual classroom needs, such as color coded Duo tangs for different subjects etc.

Bulk buying also gives us a better price for supplies and saves you from running around

looking for a specific item. This year we will collect $25.00 for each student( as opposed to

$30.00 last year) as we do have some excess supplies from last year . Please bring the

school supply payment to the office, cash or cheque no later than June 15th.

Thank you.

Planning For Next Year

Are you moving or choosing another educational option for your child next year? Please let us know

at the office!

Merci !

STUDENT PLACEMENT FOR NEXT YEAR

Dear Parents/Guardians:

At Ecole Willow Point, we value diversity and including all learners in our

classrooms. Combined classes are an established part of our school and a pos-

itive place for your child to learn. The organization of combined classes rec-

ognizes that children learn at different rates and have individual learning

needs. Instructional methods, such as cooperative learning and differentiated

instruction, are implemented in an effort to encourage responsible and inde-

pendent learning, and to meet individual needs.

Educators dedicate significant time and place careful thought when placing

children in classes. Many factors influence these decisions. In an effort to

ensure that all students are placed in appropriately balanced classrooms, prin-

cipals use criteria such as age, range of ability, special learning needs , social

groupings and teacher recommendations.

If there is something you would like us to consider about your child’s class

placement, please fill out the form in the Newsletter. We also have forms in

the office.

The Placement form is to be returned to the office, no later than June

21st.

to school from 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. on the first day. We will begin our day in the gym

with a short assembly to welcome everyone. Students will then go to last year’s

class/teacher. We will provide details about the schedule for the first week , later

this month. We will create our new classes as soon as the school district tells us that

we can proceed.

Kindergarten: New K Students will attend from 10:45 am –11:45 , par-

ents will stay with their child. We will be in touch with parents regarding the Kin-

dergarten schedule for the first week.

LOST & FOUND

Please take a look in the lost and found baskets to see if any of the

items belong to your child. All items left after June 29th will be tak-

en to the Thrift Store.

BE SUN SMART

Too much sun exposure and especially sunburns in young children can cause eye damage and can increase

the risk of skin cancer in later years. Sun damage is cumulative, which means that the damage builds up with each exposure.

Those at highest risk of skin cancer are those with:

Fair skin and blond or red hair

Skin that burns and freckles easily and doesn’t tan easily

Lots of moles or large and unusual moles

History of severe sunburns

The good news is that skin cancer is almost totally preventable.

From late spring to early fall, avoid unprotected sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If your children are

outdoors between these times, teach them to:

SEEK out the shade

SLIP on clothing that covers arms and legs

SLAP on a wide br immed hat and sunglasses

SLOP on sunscreen with SPF #30 or higher

SLURP lots of water

MAKE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

PART OF THE DAY, EVERY DAY

Games, climbing, walking, biking, dancing... What do your kids like to do every day? Do

they get outside and play? Children may just need the space and time to be active.

“Access to active play in nature and outdoors - with its risks - is essential for healthy child development. We recommend increasing children’s opportunities for self-directed play out-doors in all settings - at home, at school, in child care, the community and nature.” (Position

Statement on Active Outdoor Play, 2015)

What are the benefits?

Better sleep Better able to handle emotional challenges Better able to concentrate Stronger body, both inside and out

The benefits are clear, active kids are healthier and happier, both mind and body!
