Knowing what’s on the ground currently is the easy part knowing what should be there is the hard part. A monkey can tell what’s there knowing what should be there is the art of resource management. Use example producer thinks he only needs a water development water well but during site inventory a brush and erosion problem is identified and alternatives are developed to address the resource concerns brush mgt, rock and brush dams, diversions etc.

For example slope when planning brush management via mechanical means is it feasible or aspect how will a prescribed fire behave on a north slope verses a south slope plant composition.

Mean annual precipitation data is used to help determine Non Insured Assistance Program (NAP) in conjunction with total annual production data . They help new employees planners determine frost free periods when determining planting dates for crops.

Discuss NAP program how I use it to help FSA determine loses for rangeland. Species composition used to determine if a species like juniper has crossed a threshold and needs to be addressed using brush management either chemical, mechanical or even biological to address the resource concern.

Soil depth is used to determine if mechanical brush can be done or not. Available water holding capacity especially important when dealing with cropland.

ESD’s help planners and landowners determine what resource concerns are happening at a point in time and thus aid in showing what is there but also help determine what is missing ie plant community wise or if tree encroachment is a problem or not. Can help show the producer the site potential of  a particular site  with management or without doing anything. NRCS uses them to aid them in supporting program decisions such as brush infestation rates light, medium heavy or if brush should occur on that particular site.

Knowing how to read the landscape can help planner determine whether mechanical or hand treatment of trees is possible slope, aspect etc. Another important aspect may be landowner wanting to perform a range planting the ESD aids in determining what species of vegetation should occur composition, production, soils type, etc.

If a producers intent is to improve mule deer habitat using prescribed fire one can predict  the outcome using the information used to develop state and transition models from ESD’s. They also help when making program decisions for example does the landowner qualify for brush control via an Environmental Quality Incentives Program EQIP refer to ESD plant communities section  to see if current brush species has passed a threshold that is over what is expected for the site i.e. loamy upland site being encroached by junipers.
