Principle of sustainability
Energy flows through ecosystems in food chains and food webs
Chemical energy stored as nutrients in the bodies and waste of organisms flows through ecosystems from one tropic (feeding) level to another.
Number of trophic group
Energy flow one-way direction
Usable energy decrease with each link in a food chain or food web
In food web or chain, chemical energy stored
in biomass is transferred from one
tropic level to another
Pyramid of energy flow
Energy loss assuming a 90% in each transfer.
Law of ThermodynamicSome usable chemical energy is
degraded and lose to the
environment as low-quality heat.

Gross primary productivity (GPP)is the rate at which an ecosystem’s producers convert solar energy
into chemical energy in the form of biomass found in the tissue.
Net primary productivity (NPP)is the rate at which producers use photosynthesis to produce and
store chemical energy – the rate at which they use some of this stored
chemical energy through aerobic respiration.
