Charting UT Arlington’s Path to Tier OneBy James D. SpanioloEditor’s Note: The following is excerpted from a Sept. 15, 2009 address by James D. Spaniolo, president of The University of Texas at Arlington, to University and community leaders.

The University of Texas at Arlington achieved a milestone this fall when enrollment grew to more than 28,000 students for the first time ever. That number is up 12 percent from last year, and it includes our largest freshman class ever. More than a quarter of those freshmen graduated in the Top 10 percent of their high school class — and more than 60 percent were in the top quarter. This is good news any time, but it’s particularly significant now as we’re pushing toward national research university status. In many ways, The University of Texas at Arlington already looks like a national research. Our newly expanded Engineering Lab Building will attract first-rate faculty members and ramp up our research capacity. As exceptional as that is, it is only one component of our $150 million Engineering Research Complex. This spring, we expect to break ground on our Special Events Center, a state-of-the-art 6500-seat venue that will play home to basketball and volleyball – as well as concerts, commencements, lectures and more. It’s more than new buildings, though, that are transforming our campus. Within those buildings, our research activity has rocketed to unprecedented heights. UT Arlington has become one of the most productive research universities in Texas. Our faculty members are recognized as innovators and pioneers. And our Honors College continues to add luster to our university every day. Yet as we move toward Tier One status, we will never change the essential character and soul of our university. We may attract more top-tier students, but we will always welcome those who only need an opportunity. We want to be among the elite in pursuing excellence, but we will never be elitist. We’ve made significant progress very quickly, but we are only beginning our journey. Within the next 10 to 15 years, North Texas can have two or even three national research universities. Clearly, we want to be the first one there. But whatever the sequence, all three will have a profound impact on the economy and life of our region and state. How do we get there? What does our road to Tier One look like? Let me start here: We need more endowed chairs and professorships that will enable us to recruit the best faculty talent. We need more fellowships to attract the best graduate students and more scholarships to help us recruit the most promising undergraduates. And we must cultivate more philanthropists who will actively join us and support us in our mission. We’re also aware that throughout history, great universities have existed in great cities. We must have a Tier One downtown Arlington that is inextricably linked with our emerging Tier One university. Working in partnership with the City of Arlington and others, we can make this happen. If we are to become a national research university, we must exude quality in every single thing we do. With every decision, we must ask ourselves: Will this get us closer to our goal? The answer must always be yes. Or we will not pursue these initiatives, however worthy they may be. It’s time to move forward — not with a brisk walk but with a marathoner’s unmistakable stride. We need to sustain a sense of urgency. We’re very aware that Texas — and our campus — is neither isolated nor insulated from difficult economic times. As we move forward, we will make decisions that are fiscally responsible, but we will continue to invest strategically in initiatives that will help us reach our goal. Our challenges are real, but so is our momentum. We cannot be satisfied with being a good university — or even a better university. Good is not good enough. We must take the next step toward greatness. That is our Maverick destiny.James D. Spaniolo is president of The University of Texas at Arlington.

Meeting The ChallengeAt thirty seven, father of four Mark Jokerst is enrolled at the University of North Texas as an undergraduate student. Not only is Mark a full time student, he also works full time and still manages to keep up with family life. How does he balance it all? Mark is enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) degree program with a major in Applied Technology and Performance Improvement and takes online classes through the Department of Learning Technologies.

When asked for his advice to potential students, Mark is eager to address the myths that make people think twice about going back to school and taking classes online.

MYTH: I don’t get to pick my courses.THE REALITY: There are thirty six hours of “occupational specialization” required within the BAAS in Applied Technology and Performance Improvement. Most students transfer credits from an Associate’s degree, work experience, or military experience.

“What this all boils down to is a degree in Applied Arts and Sciences with the emphases in construction; that I have chosen. Here I have the opportunity to further my education and progress in my career, all at the same time.”

MYTH: I’m too busy to raise my family and go to school at the same time.THE REALITY: “Sure, school is challenging and it does take time but in all actuality it can be done as I have been doing just that. The program here I have found nothing short of exceptional. Everything from applying for acceptance, to actually taking the classes has been a pleasant experience.”

MYTH: Online classes are uncomfortable and alienating.THE REALITY: “This is where I think the BAAS program at UNT excels tremendously. Online, you are by no means alone. Trust me, other students have the same questions you have, and they in fact post them where you can read and reply your own thoughts and ideas, just like a real classroom except you get to do it at your time schedule, not a specific class room time. Not only can you email your instructor if you have a question, but as I have done; I have actually called my instructors with questions and they were happy to help me.

I have found that the instructors here are the same if not even more helpful and guiding than in the traditional class room setting which has allowed me to keep my hectic professional and personal life grounded. I hope that all of you that have considered going back to school and taking classes on line, consider taking them here at UNT.” For further information about the Bachelors of Applied Arts and Sciences in Applied Technologies and Performance Improvement at UNT, visit baas.unt.edu or contact an advisor at [email protected] or 1.877.875.7545.

Located along the Trinity River in downtown Fort Worth, our newest TCC campus joins the other four in providing access tohigh-quality, affordable higher education to all who seek it. Registration for the Spring 2010 semester begins on November 15.

An Equal Opportunity Institution / equal access to the disabled.

From the autumn day in 1966 when a groundbreaking shovel fractured the clay prairie soil near Loop 820, marking the birth of the Tarrant County College District, to last month when its fifth campus opened downtown, TCC has been part of the Tarrant County landscape. With three campuses in Fort Worth, one in Hurst/North Richland Hills and one in Arlington, it’s no surprise that this year and last, one in every 19 Tarrant County residents took a class at TCC and that its enrollment continues to break records. This fall, student headcount was up by 12 percent districtwide over last fall with an enrollment of 44,355 on its five campuses. The Trinity River Campus, on the banks of the Trinity River in downtown Fort Worth, at Belknap and Taylor streets, debuted in September with 3,717 students, surpassing the 3,000 students originally predicted. The Northwest Campus, 4801 Marine Creek Drive in Fort Worth,

posted the largest percentage increase –14.5, pushing its overall enrollment to 11,548. Enrollment on all other TCC campuses has also grown since last fall. South Campus, 5301 Campus Drive, increased 4.8 percent to

11,695 students; Northeast Campus in Hurst/North Richland Hills, 828 W. Harwood Rd., increased 7.6 percent to 16,209 students and Southeast, 2100 Southeast Parkway in Arlington, increased 7 percent to 12,861 students.

TCC also continues to reflect the diversity of the communities it serves. African-American student enrollment increased 17.5 percent districtwide this year, and Hispanic enrollment increased by 18.7 percent. A record number of students are taking TCC classes without setting foot on a campus. They are part of a growing population who take courses on their own time and either from their own home, office, car or virtually anywhere via Distance Learning. Since last fall, TCC’s Distance Learning program, including online and instructional TV courses, has increased by nearly a 20 percent with 10,734 students registered for this fall semester. More than 600 course sections are offered via Distance Learning.

Registration for the second eight-week

term is under way through Oct. 19. For class

schedule information, visit www.tccd.edu. For

information call 817-515-8223.

Tarrant County College Opens Fifth Campus; Enrollment Breaks Records Districtwide
