GOD’S WORDS

Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in

the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “good

-night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low.

Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some

words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s

words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The

challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align

themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT KATERI

TEKAKWITHA (1656-1680)

FEAST DAY : July 14

St. Kateri Tekakwitha

The Catholic Church has a new saint unique among all others . . . the first Native

American Indian to ever be proposed for sainthood. St. Kateri Tekakwitha was beatified

by Pope St. John Paul II in 1980 and canonized on October 21, 2012 by Pope Benedict

XVI Her feast day is July 14 and she is the patron saint of the environment, ecology, and

orphans.

At her canonization Mass, Pope Benedict XVI said of her, “Kateri impresses us by the

action of grace in her life in spite of the absence of external help and by the courage of

her vocation, so unusual in her culture. In her, faith and culture enrich each other! May

her example help us to live where we are, loving Jesus without denying who we are.

Saint Kateri, Protectress of Canada and the first native American saint, we entrust to you

the renewal of the faith in the first nations and in all of North America! May God bless

the first nations! It is said that St. Kateri’s last words are said to have been, “Jesos

Konoronkwa,” which translates, “Jesus, I love you.” Witnesses reported that within a

few minutes of her death, the pock marks from smallpox completely vanished and her

face shone with radiant loveliness. Kateri promised her friends that she would continue

to love and pray for them in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC

O God of compassion,

your people are anxious

in this time of pandemic.

Send your Holy Spirit among us

to dispel our fears.

We cry out to you in our confusion;

comfort us in our affliction.

Grant our leaders wisdom to guide us.

Strengthen and sustain those who are ill,

and be with those who care for them.

Help us to travel this road

in solidarity with our neighbors,

with our eyes fixed on the salvation

promised us through the death and resurrection

of your Son,

who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.
