This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn that maps have titles for what

the map is showing and symbols that represent specific places on that map. This lesson uses simple

maps with titles and symbols and a chart to identify them.

Print out enough copies of the charts; print out maps

with keys and titles or bring real ones in; make sure

computer use will be available for students

to learn about map keys by creating one of their own with given symbols and giving it a title. This lesson uses maps without keys and titles for

students to make their own.

another.

an outdoor “hunt”.
