Any complex mechanism is designed for a purpose. Design involves things working together according to a plan to produce something that was intended. If you look at a car, you can see that fuel powers an engine, that turns a shaft that provides drive to the wheels, this makes a self-propelled vehicle so that people can travel more easily. A look at any part of the car makes you think that the car has been designed.
1. In what ways does the eye appear to have been designed?
2. What other explanations can you think of?
Read page 8 in the textbook. Title: Evidence of Design In the World
Example Notes
Laws of Science
DNA
Evolution
Beauty of Nature
Anything that has been designed must have a designer.
There is plenty of evidence that the world has been designed (laws of science, DNA, evolution, beauty of nature.
The only possible designer of something as beautiful and complex as the world would be God.
Therefore the appearance of design in the world proves that God exists.
Use the design toolkit to produce a flow diagram
that shows how the appearance of design in the world may lead to or
support belief in God.

How do these pictures
challenge Paley’s design
argument?
Write three sentences in
your book answering this
question
No designer would have and the existence of the universe without needing God.
Science can explain the appearance of design
prove that the universe has a designer, not that God exists.
The argument does not explain how things like dinosaurs (which must have been designed badly)
created things like volcanoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters.
Even if the argument worked it would only
could have been part of a design for the world.
Match the heads with the tails to explain how the appearance of design in the world may not lead to belief
in God.

If you agree you may use the argument from design to support your view.
If you disagree, use reasons why the appearance of design doesn’t lead to belief in God.
