Commentary -

New Year, New Choices

January will see in the beginning of a brand new year. Ten years ago it was a new millen-nium. Now it will be a new decade. I’m not a believer in stewing over what was disappoint-ing and what was lost. Loss is part of the human condition. We adjust to it because timedrags us forward and never lets us go back. Look to the future and do so with enthusiasm.

A surprising amount happened to the town since the dawn of the new century. New peoplehave been attracted by Eastend and now make it their home. A new town leadership hasvision for growth and development. Renovations have been going on with real estate andwith mind sets. The wind of change is blowing stronger all the time.

Canada is now expected to be the biggest benefactor of economic growth among the G7countries in 2010 with Saskatchewan as the leading province. That makes us the best placeto live in the entire world. Who would have guessed but us? Perhaps “next year’s country”has finally arrived at its appointed time. It seems we’re living at the right place at the best

time. But no one said it was going to be easy. That shouldn’t scare anyone here. It wasnever easy to begin with. Opportunity and change are a mixed blessing. Rather like Siamesetwins, they don’t make a comfortable armful. You have to accept one to get the other. Op-portunity brings change along with it and, for Eastend, opportunity is essential.

A new decade is a strong launching point for what can be accomplished in Eastend in the

coming 10 years. However, this decade will unfold one year at a time. In the determination

to grasp opportunity we shouldn’t let the ensuing change blot out the distinctive personality

of the town. It’s one of our greatest treasures, one we need to come back to think about in

the new year ahead. Eastend is a town that’s just beginning to create a new definition for

itself. There is a committed civic sense here and an eagerness to keep building so that our

community can benefit from increased prosperity for all. At the same time, I have faith that

the values that have kept Eastend together for so long will be sustained as we move into the

new decade. This is a fine place to live and an even better one to look forward to living in aswe collectively keep re-imagining the town we care so much about. JK
