Edge Hill is committed to continuallyinvesting in improving the quality ofsport facilities on the Ormskirk campus.2010 saw an extension to the existingsports centre with the addition of a NewGymnasium and new Reception area;and 2012 sees the start of a £25 millioninvestment into new state-of-the artindoor and outdoor facilities includingan athletics track, Astroturf and grasspitches, a 25m swimming pool anddouble sports hall.

The University sports service continuesto work in partnershipwith the Students’Union to deliver student sport andrecreation for those wanting to play athigh level club competition and those

For all our members Edge Hill Sportcontinues to try to provide a range ofactivities and services that cater for allabilities and fitness levels. 2012 saw theaddition of Group Indoor Cycling (“Spinning” ) to the class programme andvarious coach-led activities along withthe introduction of an online paymentfacility. Inorder to improvecommunicationwith our customers we will continue todevelop our website and communicationthrough social media such as Facebookand Twitter to keep our customers up todate with upcoming events.

Whatever your aim, whether you areyoung or old, or whether you want toplay recreational sport or to become anelite athlete, there is something here foreveryone.

Facilities

Sporting Edge is a 25 acre Sports andLeisure complex located to the East of theEdge Hill campus in Ormskirk, offeringsome of the best sporting facilities in theregion and is fully accessible to wheelchairusers and others with disabilities.

Bookings can be made from 7.45amonwards and are accepted up to 7 days inadvance, for periods greater than this abooking form must be completed andsubmitted.

Customers must have a membership cardto be able to book activities and facilities,which can be obtained free of charge atReception or online by completing anapplication form.

If you would like to make a block bookingor book a one off event please ask for abooking enquiry form from reception ordownload online.

Student Sport and Recreation

Edge Hill Sport works in partnership withthe Students’ Union to deliver studentsport and recreation. This partnershipcombines the strengths and resources ofboth parties to raise the standard ofcompetitive sport and offer moreopportunities for recreation and socialsport. There are a variety of sportingactivities ranging from football and rugbyto cheerleading and darts. There areopportunities for students to compete andrepresent the university as part of ‘TeamEdge Hill’ or, for those just looking forsomething new and fun, why not try thevariety of activities within our ActivitiesProgramme.

Team Edge Hill

There are opportunities forstudents to represent EdgeHill University against someof the best universities in the

country in the British Universities andCollege Sports (BUCS) competition. Manyof the clubs have professional coachesemployed to help improve skills at trainingsessions and offer match day support atfixtures. This has proved successful overthe last two seasons and has seen Edge Hillmove up the BUCS rankings to become oneof themost improved universities for sportin the country. A selection of the sportsclubs and individual sports available areshown on the left but there are others.

Activities Programme

No commitment, no pressure, just playThe Activities programme offers a range ofactivities throughout the year for students,staff and the community. The programmehas a mix of some traditional sports suchas Netball, Badminton and Football andothers that you may not have tried beforesuch as Street Dance, Touch Rugby andRush Hockey. With the idea that there isno commitment to join a team or club oreven play every week, you can simply justturn up and play and have fun with yourfriends. Some sessions are led by instructorsoffering coaching tips and advice butothers are just about taking part andhaving fun with friends. So whether youwant to take part as an individual or withothers as part of a team there should besomething for everyone.

Situated in the Sporting Edge building,overlooking the running track, the FitnessSuite offers ahighquality value formoney fit-ness experience during all opening times ofthe centre (see opening times).

We pride ourselves on providing thatpersonal touch to help you get themaximumbenefit from your training. Highly qualified,knowledgeable and friendly fitnessprofessionals, who are all registered withthe Register of Exercise Professionals(REPs) are there to help you.

Our customers range from people who areembarking on an exercise programme forthe first time, topeoplewho trainandcompeteat a high level. All of our customers mixhappily together in a friendly atmosphere.

Edge Hill Sport is a member of the FitnessIndustry Association (FIA), and complieswith the FIA Code of Practice to ensure asafe and quality facility.

Other Services

InductionBefore you start yourmembershipwithus youwill need to complete a short induction courseto be able to use the Fitness Suite. Theinduction gives you the basic informationyou require to use the equipment in the suiteand gives the opportunity to ask anyquestionsyou wish regarding the facilities. Theappointment usually takes no longer than 1hour, is free of charge if you take out amembership and can be arranged at a timeconvenient to you.

Professional Health & Fitness AdviceAll members are entitled to FREE monthlyfitness training programs from our fitnessconsultants to help you achieve yourindividual fitness or lifestyle goals, withPremier members also entitled to FREEweekly one-to-one Personal Training.

Athlete SupportThe staff in the academic Department ofSport can offer sports science supportservices to athletes and teams covering awhole range of physiological and fitness. Seeedgehill.ac.uk/sport/research/consultanyfor more details.

Sports Therapy UnitThe Sports Therapy and injuryrehabilitation Centre on the first floor ofSporting Edge is open to all visitors whetherstudent, staff or community. The team ofspecialised staff offer a quality service in amodern, purpose built and well-equippedsports therapy clinic.

Exercise Referral Scheme(Positive Steps)Edge Hill Sport, in consultation with localGP’s and health professionals, operates avery successful Exercise Referral programme,giving a 10-week course of exercisespecifically aimed at improving a broadrange of physical, physiological andpsychological medical conditions.

Patients can be referred by their GP orhealth care professional onto the scheme,where our WRIGHT Foundation QualifiedConsultants will devise an appropriateexercise 10 week schedule with the option oftaking out a discounted membership at theend of the course.

Regular exercise can be fun as well ashelping to make you feel better,strengthening joints, reducing the risks ofheart disease, reducing the effects of arthritisand probably making you live longer!

‘Wheels 4 All’‘Wheels 4 All’ aims to get people back intocycling in a totally safe environment and issuitable for people of all ages, abilities, dis-abilities and differing needs. Fitness Classes

A range of fitness classes with fully qualifiedand experienced instructors are offered byEdge Hill Sport at various times of the day.These range from the more gentle Yoga,Pilates and Toning classes to the moreintense Group Cycling, Circuits and BootCamp.

All classes are free to Premier members.Standard & casual members pay a smalladditional fee per class. All class participantsmust obtain a ticket at Reception to gainentry to each class.

Junior Activities

Sports Hall AthleticsThesesessionsareaimedat8–15yearoldsandtake place in themain Sports Hall. Whetherin development towards track and fieldathletics participation or in pursuit of anactive, fun and social atmosphere, it is agreat way to introduce young people toathletics and multi-skills competition.

Sessions run on Saturday mornings.

Gymnastics & TrampolineGymnastics andTrampoline classes are taughtby qualified staff in a fun and friendlyenvironment. Classes are designed to allowchildren to experience and master skills,within theBritishGymnastics award scheme.Our Trampolining classes are designed toallow children to experience aerial acrobaticsin a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.

Gymnastics and trampolining are aimed atchildren aged 5 to 15 years with a variety ofdifferent experiences and back grounds, withthe benefits of developing co-ordination,strength and flexibility.

Gymnastics sessions run on Saturdays from9.30am onwards. Trampoline lessons runon Thursday evenings.

CATS Holiday ClubOur holiday club is called the CATS Club(Children Active Through Sport Club). Thename reflects the fact that we want toencourage children to become more activewhilsthaving fun.This runsMonday toFridayfrom 8.30am – 5.30pm for children aged8 to 12 years. Supervised by qualified staff inthe ratio of 1 staff member to a maximumof 10 children, it offers a variety of activitiesthat are specially adapted for the childrenattending each day.

At Edge Hill Sport we aim to provide thesafest, best staffed, best-equipped, mostdynamic children’s holiday play scheme.OurHoliday Clubs are affordable and accessible,offering value for money and quality carewhere your children can build lastingfriendships andmemories. The CATS Clubruns during Easter, Summer Half Termand Summer school holidays.

C.A.T.S Plus +For those that want more of the CATS Clubexperience, this 2 hour session runs everyFriday after school during term time withmore of your favourite activities and games.

Course InformationAll our courses run inblocksof approximately10weekswithpayment required for thewholeblock prior to commencing. Pre-booking isessential as places on some courses arelimited. Please note that for Gymnasticsthere is also an additional one-off annualfee that is required for membership of theBritish Gymnastics Association.

Edge Hill's swimming pool is open tostaff, students and the public through aprogrammeof supervised swimming sessions.The pool is also available for private hire andother events (subject to availability).

Swimming is FREE with all Edge Hill Sportmemberships or you can pay on each visit.

The swimming timetable is occasionallysubject to change due to academic demandsand as much notice as possible is given inadvance of any changes. Swimming LessonsSwimming Lessons are available for adultsand children aged 4 years and over to caterfor all abilities from the non-swimmer to themore advanced. Fully qualified andexperienced teachers lead our lessons in asafe and positive environment to build upconfidence in the water whilst workingtowards improving swimming ability andtechniques, and offering the chance to earnbadges and certificates in the award scheme.

Classes are grouped according to abilityfrom beginners to advanced, with normallyone teacher for up to ten swimmers, withlessons lasting for 30 minutes. Swimmersare assessed continuously andmoved to themost suitable class for their ability.

Lessons run on Mondays, Wednesdaysand Thursdays from 4.30pm onwards andSaturdays from 11.00am onwards.

For those who want amore personal service,private lessons are available.

From Liverpool via the A59Fromtheendof theM57/M58atSwitch Islandfollow the A59 to Ormskirk. On reaching thebottom of Holborn Hill, after passingthrough Aughton, take the third exit at theroundabout into Aughton Street, keepingthe Fire Station on your left. At the trafficlight controlled T-junction, turn right, gothrough the pedestrian lights and right atthe next set of lights into St Helens Road.Edge Hill is half a mile up St Helens Roadon the left.

From Preston via the A59From the A59 take the B5319 signpostedOrmskirk Town Centre. At the traffic lightcontrolled T-junction turn left into the one-way system around Derby Street (keeping tothe right hand lane), Stanley Street,Knowsley Road and turning left into St He-lens Road. Edge Hill is half a mile up theroad on the left.

RailThe nearest mainline stations to Ormskirkare Liverpool Lime Street and Preston. Alocal train service is available to Ormskirkfrom these stations. If you're travelling toLiverpool, please ensure that you change atLimeStreetandnotatastationcalledEdgeHill.From Lime Street take the underground orwalk to Liverpool Central station, then aNorthern LineMerseyrail train to Ormskirkwhich takes about 25 mins.

BusOrmskirk is on the national bus network ,buses run on a regular basis to and fromSouthport, St Helens and parts of Liverpool.Many bus services in the region are run byArriva North West, who offer discountedseason tickets to Edge Hill students. Edge Hill is half a milealong St Helens Road on your left. The walktakes approximately 15 minutes.
