Extended Forecast for the Town
Weve had a lot of snow in the SW area this winter. With the transition into spring, everyones thoughts turn to the prospects of flooding. No one more so than theMayor, Scott Morvik, whose attention is on the extended 5-week weather forecast.Ten degree temperatures arent that significant, 20 degrees is the issue. Scottsays. A fast melt is exactly what we dont need.
However, the Town has a plan in the event of an emergency. The Mayor and DebGiverhaug, Emergency Measures Officer, have reviewed it several times to be surewe are as prepared as possible should water levels rapidly rise.
The Government of Saskatchewan has not been reluctant to provide constructiveassistance. When offered funding for temporary measures, the Mayor and TownCouncil declined, requesting more substantial help. On March 24th the ProvincialGovernment confirmed that they will be providing 75% of funding for the con-struction of a permanent flood wall from Hwy. 13 to the railway tracks. This willnot be ready this spring but will contribute additional safety in the future.
In the meantime lets assess our situation. Potential flooding would come from theeastern end of the town, the lowest area. The Lift Station for the sewer is a pointof vulnerability. High water there would cause a back-up through our sewer sys-tem. However, Mayor Morvik indicates that we would have ample time for warn-
ing. The existing flood wall is in good condition and was well constructed. TheTowns priority would be to see that everyone in harms way is evacuated tosafety. Mayor Morvik has the right to declare a State of Emergency in the areawhich would allow authorities the right to take whatever steps are necessary toprotect residents and the town. The province provides a Disaster Fund to assist incleaning up debris and damage in the aftermath.
Immediate steps in implementing a planned response are determined by theweather. At this time, unnecessary action would be both useless and expensive. However, one of our greatest assets is that many residents were here during the1996 flood and have that knowledge and experience to draw from in the event thatit is needed now. Our other asset is time. We have a lot of time for warning and
implementing our response plan. Today, just keep an eye on that extended forecastand hope for a long, slow melt with warm breezes.JK

Letter to the Edge
The John Deere musical machine is asham? I watched it ten times andnever saw the incredible device com-mit a single misstep. That shouldhave been the first clue of artifice. Iadmit, for a few brief moments in-
dulging in a giddy celebration of hu-man inspiration, persistence and in-genuity. My normal cynicism dis-solved. I saw hope for a world wheresuch people exist, who would devote40,000 hours bringing perfection tolife. What mind could imagine such acontrivance let alone devote a life-time to it's physical achievement? Asit turns out not a mind but a com-puter. Betrayed once again by wish-ful thinking I resolve to never believe
anything I see until I ask the Googlefirst.

Gardeners Regret
March is a month of considerable frustra-tion - it is so near spring and yet across agreat deal of the country the weather is stillso violent and changeable that outdoor activ-ity in our yards seems light years away.

In a true Earth-radical group, concernfor wilderness preservation must bethe keystone. The idea of wilderness, after all, is the most radical in humanthought - more radical that Paine, than Marx, than Mao.
Wilderness says: Human Beings arenot paramount, Earth is not for HomoSapiens alone, human life is but onelife form on the planet and has noright to take exclusive possession.Yes, wilderness for its own sake, with-out any need to justify it for humanbenefit. Wilderness for wilderness. For bears and whales and titmice andrattlesnakes and stink bugs. And wilderness for human beings Be-cause its home.
Dave Foreman, Confessions of an Eco-Warrior
There is only one fundamental alternative in the natural world: the alternative oflife and death. Like all living things, we humans must act to further our own inter-ests, or we perish. But unlike other living things, we cannot effectively compete aspredators, with claws, fangs, speed, and strength. In order to survive and flourish innature, we must produce what we need. We must use our unique reasoning powersto transform natural resources into the goods and services that sustain and enhance
our lives.

Mysteries on the Dark Side
Chelsea Cain is a new discovery for me.Shes been writing mysteries for severalyears but hasnt received the attentionthat she deserves. Probably because hermysteries are a bit uncomfortable.
Cain is among a new breed of womenwriters stepping way out of the stereo-
typical female comfort zones of writingpurple prose and chick lit, and insteadserving up meatier and more gruesomestories.
Its not just that Gretchen Lowell, thepsycho serial killer at the centre of Cainsthrillers, is a woman. She is the very es-sence of beautiful, ruthless, Evil.
The disturbing element is DetectiveArchie Sheridan as her lone survivingvictim. Gretchen still manipulates to con-trol his life and he tries everyday to getbeyond her grasp. He has come to hate
her but also love her is some strangeway. Can he ever define his existenceagain without her?
The current four novels in this series areworth reading but theyre not light mate-rial. If you can take half a cup of grue-some with half a cup of hope, then startwith Heartsickand read on. JK

Coconut Oil is a Treasure
How much money have I spent over theyears on lotions, creams, oils and exoticSwiss laboratory concoctions that all claim toprovide ageless, wrinkle-free, soft skin?None of them were particularly impressive. They all came in small jars with big pricetags.
Then I was introduced to coconut oil. A sim-ple, natural product that makes your skin feellike silk even in this harsh climate. It leavesno residue, is not greasy or sticky. It is unbe-lievably inexpensive. Its wonderful on yourhands, your face, your hair and all your skinsurfaces.
Commercial creams are predominately wa-ter. Their moisture is quickly absorbed intodry, wrinkled skin. As the water enters theskin, it expands the tissues, like filling a bal-loon with water, so the wrinkles fade awayand skin feels smoother. But this is only tem-porary. As soon as the water evaporates or iscarried away by the bloodstream, the dry, wrinkled skin returns. Most lotions containsome type of highly processed vegetable oilsthat are devoid of all the natural, protectiveantioxidants that are so important to skincare. (The Coconut Oil Miracle - BruceFife, C.N., N.D.)
Coconut oil is also now recognized as awholesome dietary addition that contributesto better overall health. Try some. JK
