    Everybody Welcome!

A Salute to the Oldest Profession

A seldom observed day of recognition has again passed this November with typical under-statement and lack of justified commemoration. I refer, of course, to Accounting Day, cele-brated on November 10th each year. This marks a singular day in history the publication ofthe first book on accounting.

On November 10, 1494, volume 2 of Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni etPorportionalita (Everything About Arithmetic, Geometry and Proportion) was published. Itis in volume 2 of the Summa that Luca Pacioli included a description of the bookkeeping/accounting system of Venice. In honour of this contribution, Pacioli has been deemed forcenturies to be the Father of Accounting.

Actually, that was the documentation of the system of double entry bookkeeping. Account-ing, in the sense of counting up or keeping track of the number of things, is itself very an-cient. It would have included accurately estimating the number of game, the sharing out ofthe kill, the assessment of the size of enemy armies, the division of spoils and the tribute tobe paid to the conquerors. It works much the same way in todays tax system where youraccountant is often your best ally.

In old Timbuktu a yearly tribute of gold equal to the Kings weight was paid. Who toiled inthe background to weight and account for all that? Who kept peace among pirates andthieves by counting up those ill gotten doubloons? Who kept and cooked the books within

the Mafia? None other than some lowly bean counter whose honesty in these matters couldbe trusted through the accuracy of the records he kept. Thats why when the King was in hiscounting house counting out his money the Queen could securely sit in her parlour eatingbread and honey. Everyone needs a good accountant.

Mind you, accountants are not to be confused with bankers.Theyre a totally different kettle of fish and have their ownspecial day of judgement and slow applause.

Accounting, contrary to general misapprehension, is trulythe oldest profession. I know because in any original ex-change of goods or services for compensation there mustfirst have been someone who could account for the valuesof the negotiated commodities. That means historically that

the bean counters deserve public recognition as the oldestprofession hands down.

If you want to set your children on the right track in life

buy them a bag of beans for Christmas and tell them to get

    counting.

    Shower.

The Leonids is one of the better meteor

showers to observe, producing an aver-

age of 40 meteors per hour at their peak.

The shower itself has a cyclic peak year

every 33 years where hundreds of mete-

ors can be seen each hour. The last ofthese occurred in 2001. The shower usu-

ally peaks on November 17 & 18, but

you may see some meteors from Novem-
