Events/Achievements A major highlight for 2013 was the substantial engagement activities undertaken by members to promote CEM and ECU research outcomes and expertise. A total of 40 engagement activities with state, national international entities were undertaken, including conference presentations. On the 18 th September 2014 the CEM hosted a seminar on Human Exposure to Environmental Contaminants: Methods and Interventions. The seminar included guest speaker DR Martin Cope who addressed modeling approaches to air pollution. The seminar explored available technologies and methods as well as their application for assessing human exposures to environmental pollutants. The seminar was aimed at those who would like to learn more about current approaches and the importance and application of human exposure science from both an environmental and occupational perspective. During 2014, CEM Honorary Member and mentor Dr David Goodall celebrated his 100 th Birthday and his outstanding contributions to ecology were recognised by the International Association of Vegetation Science during their conference in Perth. The Tuesday of the conference week was called “David Goodall day” and papers on David’s contribution to plant ecology were presented including one by the IAVS President, Enrico Feoli titled “Some thoughts about David Goodall’s work”. BRIEF OVERVIEW AND HIGHLIGHTS (Outline major activities conducted in past year) In 2014, CEM member research activities have resulted in research income from 16 new projects (11 externally funded) totalling more than $1.8 million, including 1 Category 1 project (totalling >$1.2 million). Research outputs have increased to 60 publications, including 4 books/book chapters, 42 peer-reviewed papers, 6 conferences papers and 4 reports. Events/Achievements A major highlight for 2013 was the substantial engagement activities undertaken by members to promote CEM and ECU research outcomes and expertise. A total of 40 engagement activities with state, national international entities were undertaken, including conference presentations. On the 18th September 2014 the CEM hosted a seminar on Human Exposure to Environmental Contaminants: Methods and Interventions. The seminar included guest speaker DR Martin Cope who addressed modeling approaches to air pollution. The seminar explored available technologies and methods as well as their application for assessing human exposures to environmental pollutants. o CEM organised a series of seminars under the theme ‘Human Exposure to Environmental Contaminants: Methods and Interventions’ during research week 2014, which involved a number of staff, postdoctoral presenters and guest speakers.

The CEM will continue to foster post-doctoral appointments to promote early career researchers at ECU.

o The CEM contributed to ongoing post-doc appointments and provided research funds to support purchase of capital items and travel to conferences.

The CEM will continue to support visiting scholars and speakers. o Support for visiting fellows (in conjunction with Faculty Scheme) was provided through

the CEM Member Research Support scheme.

Members of the CEM will continue to strengthen research links, collaborations and engagement with government agencies, industry and non-governmental organizations active in the environmental field.

o CEM members achieved ongoing success in securing research funds from nationally competitive grant schemes, government agencies and industry partners.

The CEM will, funding permitting, initiate a staff small grants scheme to promote the research of early career academic staff.

o The CEM has maintained a CEM Member Research Support scheme since 2010 and in 2014 over $33,000 was committed to supporting staff applications for capital items, travel, sample analysis costs.
