GREETINGSby Wolfgang Steinhardt

2012 went by quicklyindeed, and oncemore it was a mosteventful year!

I would like to takethe forthcoming Christmastime and the turn of the yearas an occasion to personallyand most cordially thank allthose who participated inmaking the year 2012 themost successful year of theLazarus Union since it wasfounded.

Not only has the number ofmembers and friends risento more than 14,000 butfinally we have received allthe international acknowl-edgement and appreciationwe have been working for sohard.

Sine the begin of 2012 weare a counterpart of theUnited Grand Priories, inde-pendent and autonomous,but nevertheless embeddedin the world-spanning or-ganisation of the Militaryand Hospitaller Order ofSaint Lazarus of Jerusalemand as such a (substantial)part of this organisation.According to the statutes theacting Supreme Grand Priorof the order is automaticallythe Grand Protector of theLazarus Union and its “elite

force,“ the “Lazarus UnionKnighthood of Honour.“

Although the Lazarus Unionby its basic structure is anumbrella organisation over-seeing more than 60 na-tional organisations, prefec-tures, delegations, andmember associations, wecan look back to a series ofown events in 2012.

I want to list only a few ofthose here (representativeof more than 80 participa-tions in various events):

the 6th CSLI Handi-capped Air Day

the 1st CSLI Handi-capped Sailing Cruise

the 1st concert of theBig Band of the Laza-rus Union

the 3rd and 4th inves-titure of the LazarusUnion Knighthood ofHonour

a visit to the 1st Laza-rus Symposium inMalta with morethan 800 participants

delegations andmembers of theboard visiting Can-ada, England, Malta,Germany, Italy, andCroatia.

Most notable is the fact thatall these trips have onlybeen funded privately by theparticipants themselves,

with absolutely no moneycoming from the LazarusUnion. Also there are noremunerations of boardmembers or other members.With only a bare 2% of ad-ministrative costs (morethan 98% go directly into ourprojects) we top all organisa-tions with comparable sizeand number of members.

I do not want to leftunmentioned our new webpage which has been in-stalled with great commit-ment as a communicationplatform. It is accepted verywell as indicated by themore than 50,000 hits permonth. For all those with nointernet access we havefounded the “Lazarus Maga-zine“ as a periodical cur-rently with two issues peryear in German and English.

To all members, friends, andsponsors once more a cor-dial “Thank You“ for makingthis possible. Everybody cando something. Let us createperspectives together!

All these permanent effortsand the visible success con-nected to it have silencedmost of our critics (which wenaturally do have and wevery well have to live withthat fact) and we can alsoconsider this a joint success.

But we will not let our ef-forts wane and proffer our

hands to all who want to joinus on our way for a distancein accordance with the in-tentions of St Lazarus. So for2013 we have planned al-ready the 7th CSLI Handi-capped Air Day, one or twoconcerts of our Big Band ofthe Lazarus Union, twoceremonial investitures, andseveral visits (Brazil, Scot-land, Spain, Malta, Italy,Germany etc.). We hope tocontinue with our successfulway. For June 2014 we havealready started planning ourbig “International FriendshipFestival of the Lazarus Un-ion“ in Vienna.

With this in mind I wish youall a blessed Christmas and aHappy and Successful NewYear 2013.

A NEW BEGINNINGby Sven Tratschitt

Each year we make ourNew Year’s resolutions,but they don’t last long;and 2012 will not be anexception. When theNew Year is rung in,

greeted with loud firecrack-ers, we often think: "A NEWBEGINNING!" and thenwonder why somehow eve-rything stays the same. Weall want change: the sickwant to be healthy, the un-employed want to find a job,the suffering and the mourn-ing want to be happy.

Even those for whom every-thing went well last year

wish for change: you’d haveno objection if the businessat least goes a little bit bet-ter, with new customersgained so you can get an-other promotion. Perhapsyou’re planning a jobchange, or even taking theleap to independence. Theonly certain thing - as theysay - is change.

As for the New Year’s resolu-tions, they are usually for-gotten very fast in any case.Even if you manage to stopsmoking, change your diet,exercise more and loseweight to finally becomehealthier and take moretime for the family, the bot-tom line turns out to be thatthings somehow always re-main the same. Even if oneis able to set different priori-ties so you're working foryourself, in reality, a genuinechange rarely takes place.

But one does not actuallyhave to stay the same. Thereis an answer to the questionof whether money, wealthand career are everything.There is an answer to thequestions of whence, whyand whereafter. There isindeed a purpose to life: donot get caught up in superfi-cialities. There is always thechance to make a seriouschange, even if outwardlyeverything seems to remainthe same.

However, the New Year isn’tthe only time to make a newstart: a birthday, a wedding,the birth of a child or achange of job are all oppor-

tunities for change. So here’sto A NEW BEGINNING!

CSLI-BRAZILby Roberto Ortiz

The year 2012 was an-other successful andbusy year for CSLI inBrazil, we have in-creased our numbersand our actions, andprovided even more serviceto our society and our com-munity.

We have held on March theinvestiture and awardingceremony, where the med-als and insignia of CSLI wereawarded to the meritoriousmembers in Brazil.

The Saint Lazarus Academyof Chivalric and Humanitari-an Studies was created. Wehave already sent to ourmembers and friends twostudies about the history ofthe Order and its activitiesand we will be sending newresearches and studiesmonthly. Our Coordinator,Adílio Jorge Marques Cap-tain CSLI, historian and uni-versity professor has devel-oped a cycle that will helpour members to better un-derstand our role. Last Au-gust 29th he was invited tomake a speech in the Histor-ical and Cultural Institute ofthe Air Force and will startdiscussions for further jointactions.

Our first winter clothes col-lect campaign was a hugesuccess. According to thenumbers given to us by thepersons responsible for the

collect points in São Pauloand Rio de Janeiro, our par-ticipation made their collectincreases about 20% in SãoPaulo and about 60% in Riode Janeiro. Certainly this is aproject that will be improvedand kept for the next years.

We have translated, adaptedand developed our owntraining material and starttraining groups on First Aidand Emergency Response.We have so far trained 27individuals in two differentgroups. Our goal is to have anew group and a new coursehappening in a monthly ba-sis.

One of the most importantsteps of this period is thebegging of a part-nership with theassociation “Amigosde Missão em Ação”(AMA) in Rio deJaneiro. This associ-ation devotes itselfto children and theirfamily, by offeringactivities such as:

Help with Schooltasks and reinforce-ment;

Notions of hygiene,health and nutrition;

Notions of Ethics, cit-izenship, charity andenvironment;

Recreation, ballet,modern dance, soc-cer and martial arts;

Music lessons and amarching band;

Other charitable ac-tions, depending onthe specific needs ofthe children of theprogram and theirfamilies.

This action has now 70 chil-dren enrolled and 150 otherhave passed through theactivities so far.

We are now working on ourcampaign for Christmas andalso on our next ceremonythat will happen on Rio deJaneiro on March 2nd 2013.In this occasion we will offi-cially invest theCommand inthis State and we hope tohave you, numerous, amongus for this important day.

earthly body Argentina (CTA)was created with the needfor assistance in remoteplaces where you can notget off-road vehicles. Ourfocus in 2012 was toincrease the number ofmembers and begin the taskof training and managementtraining in extremeconditions and locations. Sothis year we become 30Beetles. CSLI Argentina has35 members.

Our first task was to offerand work with the Ministryof Water Resources of theProvince of Córdoba toconduct a survey of riversand streams, with powerflows and location ofmargins. This can helptowards the prevention offloods and rising, especiallyin summer time can causeserious injury tounsuspecting tourists.

the use of Defibrillator AEDequipment, and to under-taken Mental Health FirstAid (MHFA). Both of thesetraining activities are linkedto our support for searchdogs groups.

We have our own website:www.csli.org.uk with links toAED and MHFA training pro-viders, and of course to theCSLI international website:www.csli.at

In our recruitment activities,we want to make CSLI inGB&I accessible for suitablecandidates of all ages. Inthat regard, we are aimingto keep costs to an absoluteminimum. We are not im-posing any fees for member-ship, beyond the interna-tional requirement formembers to acquire one ofthe levels of the CSLI Foun-dation Cross within 12months of acceptance as a

member.

The wearing of uniform isonly to be compulsory formembers of the Colour Partywe intend to form, and wehave sourced a basic work-ing uniform to fulfil thatneed. All other members ofCSLI in GB&I are of coursewelcome to wear uniform ofthey wish.

We have settled into a twiceyearly meeting structure,with additional ad-hocevents through the year,usually in conjunction with

other organisations.

INVESTITURE VIENNAby Spectator

October 13. 2012, the bythen biggest investiture cer-emony of the Lazarus UnionKnighthood of Honour tookplace. This time the selectedlocation was the parishchurch in Rudolfsheim inVienna’s 15. district.

This church which resemblesmore a medieval cathedralthan a mere church is famousfor being mistaken for St.Stephen’s Cathedral by manytourists who look over theskyline of Vienna fromSchönbrunn Palace.

At 2:30 the already almosttraditional open-air concert ofthe Lazarus Union MusicCorps tuned the guests in onthe upcoming event.

At 3:00 sharp a tremendousand grand procession (about150m long) started to moveinto the church. The combina-tion of various formations(relief organizations, associa-tions, acolytes, historical mili-tary groups, etc.) immediatelyattracted the interest of the

people on the square in frontof the church. More than 250guests had come to celebratethis event with us.

Of course this ceremonialevent was accompanied by allofficers of the CSLI honourguard commanded by CSLIMajor Manfred Stadler as thecommander CSLI Colonel Pat-rick Poppel was a knight initi-ate himself this time. But hisdeputy commander managedthe task flawlessly.

The new banners of theKnights of Honour were car-ried by standard-bearers inhistorical costumes showingvarious formations of thearmies of the crusades. So abridge was closed to the be-ginnings of the order of St.Lazare which recruited itselfout of knights of Outremersuffering from leprosy, thusforming the dreaded “army ofthe living dead.”

Officiant of the Holy Mass wasDDr. Reinhard Knittel (Officialof the diocese court St Pöltenand vice-chancellor of theFranciscan churchPrandtauerkirche). He cele-brated the service (followingthe old Latin rites) with ut-most dignity and solemnity. In

his sermon he men-tioned the knightlyideals, especiallyaddressing “totaldedication” as theineradicable anchorof knighthood.

Support was provid-ed by acolytes fromRudolfsheim parish,the Brotherhood of

theHolyArchangelMicha

el, and volunteers from St.Stefen.

The musical framework wastaken care of by the CSLI Mu-sic Corps conducted by CSLIBgdrGen Friedrich Lentner.The enormous organ wasplayed by Mrs. Mag. LusinePoppel who is well acquaintedwith local music customs (andalso a CSLI music officer).

Delegations from many friendorganizations visited the in-vestiture, e.g. the Order of StLazare, the Radetzky Order,Michaels Order, ÖKB Mödling,Austria Humanitas Corps,K.Ö.St.V. Rudolfina Wien imÖCV, Prima Nocte, MilitesSancti Imperii, Spielern FireBrigade, Red Cross, Army En-gineers Society, Marine Com-radeship Archduke FerdinandMax, Ordo Hungariae, Sover-eign Military Order ofMalta, Peacekeeper,Veteran’s Society,delegations from theAustrian Army, Orderof Joachim, Order ofCyprus, Order of theWhite Eagle und rep-resentatives of thediplomatic corps.

Alltogether 23 ban-ners and flags were to

be counted which all receivedas a souvenir a wonderfulembroidered flag banner as asign of mutual friendship.

Besides the investiture of sixknights and dames of honourseveral promotions and hon-ours were awarded, also topersons who showed extraor-dinary merits with their chari-table work and performance.

The standard-bearers in theirmedieval costumes drew spe-cial attention of all visitorsand provided a worthy back-ground for the ceremony.

Following the investiture theLazarus Union provided freedrinks and sandwiches to allguests. Additionally the socie-ty of the friends of theRudolfsheim church donatedred wine as a worthy wel-come gift to the Lazarus Un-ion.

It was a successful day whichwill be well remembered byall participants!

VIENNA EMERGENCY

MEDICAL SERVICE

by Lazarus Union

A delegation of the LAZARUSUNION visited the operationscenter of Vienna’s EmergencyMedical Services on October18th, 2012.

The CSLI was invited by thehead of Vienna’s City Gov-ernment Emergency MedicalServices, Dr. RainerGottwald. It was a visit inmutual interest to get betterknown to each other and tolearn more about each oth-er‘s work. Interest-ed participantswere PresidentSteinhardt andcomrades Kadlec,Ptak, Gebel undPoppel, as well ascomradeHochmuth, andAnita and Prof.Hans König.

After a welcome Dr.Gottwald presentedhis organisation.The first emergency serviceswere founded after the bigfire atVienna’s Burgtheater(ImperialCourtTheatre) in1881.Vienna’s EmergencyMedical Services (MA 70,“Rettungs- undKrankenbeförderungsdienstder Stadt Wien”) is an emer-gency organisation operatingon a statutory basis givenbyVienna’s City Council. Theyoperate the majority of allemergency vehiclesinViennaand provide a dis-posal and operations centre.They co-operate with severalprivate ambulance serviceslike the Red Cross Austria, the

Samaritan Emergency Ser-vices, and similar organisa-tions like the Knights of MaltaAmbulance, together formingthe Vienna Emergency Coop-eration. Part of the tasks isthe emergency support pla-toon. It is designed for mis-sions involving large numbersof accident victims, specialaccident patterns, increaseddemand in personnel andsupplies, and also a muchlonger on-site mission dura-tion compared to routinemissions.

Vienna’s Emergency MedicalServices operate 12 bases

inVienna, all of which aremanned with paramedics andemergency doctors round theclock. About 800 paramedicsand 80 doctors ensure 24/7services. In 2011 a total of256,886 missions were ac-complished, 165,811 of thoseby MA70.Vienna’s EmergencyMedical Services provide alsohigh quality training for theirown personnel as well asthose from other organisa-tions in an Emergency ServiceAcademy.

The operation centre is one ofthe most recent state-of-the-art facilities inEurope. It is

reachable at the emergencynumber “144“ 24 hours a day.The staff provides assistanceto every caller and can sup-port persons providing on-sitefirst aid in all forms of medicalemergencies. The averageambulance trip time to anemergency site is 12 minutes.

The vehicle fleet includesamong others ambulanceswith and without emergencydoctors. But their pride andjoy is a mobile intensive careunit where even smaller sur-gical treatments are possible.This vehicle allows also pro-fessional transport of ex-

tremely heavy pa-tients thus provid-ing humane trans-portation for suchpersons.

We were most im-pressed by thoseexplanations andbackground infor-mation and nowunderstand the jobof ambulance ser-vices much better.

Following this presentationpresident Steinhardt providedand overview on the LazarusUnion and presented a Laza-rus Union standard-banner toDr. Gottwald as a sign offriendship and comradeship.He presented our missionstatement, our goals andtasks as well as our organisa-tion structure and gave ex-amples from our work. Obvi-ously the video from theHandicapped Air Day wasmost impressive to the com-rades from theVienna’s Emer-gency Medical Services.
