20th June, 2018

Next week every student will receive their

mid-year report card. Under the Australian

Curriculum every student is measured

against an ‘achievement standard.’ The

standard states ‘by the end of year 3’;

which means students have twelve months

to try and reach all the criteria within the

standard. While we do mark against the

units of work we have taught our overall

judgment is based against the standard. It can therefore be difficult

to assess against a complete piece of work that is only half finished

at the mid-year point. This is often why student’s report card marks

are better at the end of the year. Please talk to your child’s teacher if

you have any questions or concerns in relation to their report card.

While we work diligently to ensure all of our student’s do their very

best at all times, not every student will get A’s on their report cards.

For many reasons students are better at some things than others.

Some times in life things are not going well and there are very good

reasons for limited success. We need to try and understand why

things are going well or not. First and foremost, is the child happy at

school? Do they have good friends? Do they have a positive

relationship with their teacher? Is everything going well at home at

the moment? All these and many more factors can influence a

child’s progress. If a teacher or parent is not satisfied that the report

card mark is accurate based on all the available information then a

conversation and a plan need to happen.

Again, while we endeavour to ensure every child reaches their

potential at school there are many instances of successful people in

life who did not do well at school. Sir Richard Branson (Virgin) left

school at 15 and was failing. Today he is worth 48 billion dollars.

What we have to do is look at how we motivate, challenge and

support every student to ensure that they do not wait until they leave

school before they find success.

Deputy Principal’s News –Middle Phase A Message from the Middle Phase Deputy Principal – Mrs Wendy McKay

As we approach the end of the term, many families believe that learning has stopped. That is not true. Learning takes place all day, every day right up until the end of the last day of term. If you are struggling to get your children to school, talk to us to see how we can support you.

Learners of the Week A huge congratulations to all of our award recipients. It’s wonderful to see the number of students at our school who are committed to their learning.

Continue to work hard in all of your lessons. We are very proud of you all!

The next Senior Leader Induction ceremony will take place on Wednesday, July 25 at 1.45 pm in the Hall. Letters were sent to recipients’ parents last week.

Year 6 into Year 7 As we head into Semester Two, it is time to consider which secondary school your child will be attending. If you haven’t already done so, please contact your chosen high school to obtain a prospectus, which will outline information about the school, including advice on how to apply. In Semester Two, our year 6 students will also be invited to attend one of the high schools to experience a typical day in the life of a high school student. This will be a wonderfully invaluable experience, not to be missed. I will provide further information as it comes to hand. If you have questions specifically regarding high school, please contact the relevant secondary school directly. Regards

Wendy

Australia Zoo – Year 1 Excursion

On the Friday 8th June, all the Year 1 students travelled to Australia Zoo to learn about the

myriad of animals and their habitats housed there. The students spent a wonderful day of

learning and in awe of the animals and their antics. They also bumped into a celebrity – Terri

Irwin, filming a new documentary. A big thank-you to the teachers for all their work in

providing such a great learning opportunity and working with their students on the day.

Thank-you to all the volunteer parents, you were a fantastic support to our teachers and

students and helped in making the day a memorable one.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2018

All Kallangur State School students are invited to join this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of opportunities.

The reading period for the 2018 Premier's Reading Challenge commences on Monday 14 May and closes Friday 24 August.

This year the Premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year

2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15

books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture

books.

All students will receive a ‘Reader Record Form’ to complete over the coming months. Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.

Students who participate but don’t complete the challenge receive a Certificate of Participation from the school.

For more information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge, please visit: http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/readingchallenge/

You can play a big part in your child’s future by encouraging them to be part of this positive
