“Pale Mountains”: this was the name used to describe

the Dolomites for quite some time until about 200 years

ago, when the French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu

studied and analyzed the composition of the rock. Thus

they inherited his name. The Val Gardena Dolomites em-

body a mysterious and legendary world that continues

to captivate even beyond its initial impact. The towering

Sassolungo stands out, reaching 3,181 meters. Its name

derives from the slender and long south wall (Italian:

sasso=stone, lungo=long). The eye-catching panorama

includes the jagged summits of the Torri del Fermeda,

which are part of the Odle Group, and the 3,000 me-

ters of the Furchëta and Sass Rigais, where Reinhold

Messner’s mountaineering career began. Year after year

countless skiers, excursionists and cyclists set out to

complete the circuit around the Sella Group, covering the

26 km of the renowned Sellaronda, clockwise or counter-

clockwise for any of the various sports.

44 The gems of Val Gardena

It seems incredible that the landscape dominated

nowadays by these massive peaks, 250 million years

ago was covered by a tropical sea called Tethys. This sea

marks the birthplace of the Dolomites, as we are often

reminded by fossils and remains of calcified coral reef.

Naturetakesthestage

Luis Trenker, one of the most famous descendants of Val

Gardena as well as a talented alpinist, defined the Do-

lomites as “the most beautiful mountains in the world”.

UNESCO also recognized the Dolomites unique beauty

and in 2009 these mountains were added to the list of the

World Heritage natural sites.

Not only rock climbers are drawn to the Puez-Odle Natural

Park, situated in the alpine paradise of the Val Gardena

Dolomites and part of the Natural Heritage of Humanity.

This protected area is a true living book of geology that

tells the history of the Dolomites through depositional

layers, erosion phenomena and various rock types.

Perceptive excursionists can find both small and large

treasures, like fossils of sea shells and other oceanic

remains as well as flowers like gentians and edelweiss or

perhaps even spot a deer or bird of prey. In March, cro-

cuses and spring pasque flowers announce the arrival of

spring, while in summer one can find alpine roses, Turk’s

cap lilies and rare orchid species such as the lady’s slip-

per. With a little luck you might even spot a golden eagle

circling majestically in the skies above Vallunga.

The “Pale Mountains”

And when, at different times throughout the day,

the “Pale Mountains” alternate between shades

of silvery grey, yellow ochre or coppery red,

and the sun kissed peaks blush, the silence is

often broken by the shrill calls of marmots.

SummerinValGardena

In Val Gardena, the trails begin right outside your front door

and numerous uphill facilities quickly carry hikers up to

the realm of chamois and marmots. The towers, summits,

peaks and gigantic boulders of the Val Gardena Dolomites

have the power to ignite the imagination and desire to walk

in even the smallest of hikers. During the Children’s Weeks,

in the summer months, everything revolves around games,

sports and nature with special attention to fairy tales and

legends of the valley. The high wire adventure park of Or-

tisei lets both young and old test themselves along dozens

of suspension bridges, platforms, stairs and ladders at

heights between three and fifty metres, equipped with hel-

mets, harnesses, carabiners and ropes. The loop around

the Sella Group takes 5 to 8 hours along the Sellaronda.

Cyclists are faster, whereas those who would like to see the

view from above can opt for paragliding. In any case, every-

one will enjoy breathtaking views.

The alpine world of the Val Gardena Dolomites offers

adventure for the whole family. Discovering this ter-

restrial paradise will be an unforgettable experience

whether on foot, by bicycle, along a rock wall or high

in the sky.

Sellaronda Bike Day

During summer, two Sundays are designated to the

Sellaronda Bike Day. The motto is “Make way for

cyclists!”: the surrounding Dolomite passes are closed

to traffic and reserved for those who prefer to pedal.

Themountainsarecalling

The Dolomites of Val Gardena are one of the most highly

esteemed alpine areas by rock climbers and excursion-

ists. Green pastures at their feet and characteristic moun-

tain huts have the same enticing effect on expert climbers

as well as on the casual weekend climbers.

From the late 19th century, the Val Gardena Dolomites

have attracted enthusiasts from all over the globe. By

now, the reputation of the grey mountains inhabited by

evil spirits is only an old recollection. Dexterity and skill

accompany climbers and excursionists as they conquer

peaks at the top of steep walls climbing up through crev-

ices and openings in the rock, or as they attempt descents

into hidden canyons. Those who have succumbed to the

allure of the mountains find it difficult to stay away. There

are two distinct characteristics that Val Gardena alpinists

have in common: cohesion and solidarity. Luis Trenker

once said: ”The only conversations at summits that make

real sense are those of the mountaineers.” Safety is top

priority and the crew at the mountain rescue service Aiut

Alpin Dolomites is always ready to intervene in case of

emergency, either with or without a helicopter.

Discover the Dolomites

The experts at the Val Gardena Mountain Guides

Association and at the Alpine School Catores

passionately accompany mountain enthusiasts to

discover the Dolomites. One classic itinerary is the

via ferrata to the top of the Sassopiatto (2,956 m).

The native people of Val Gardena are devoted to tradition

and proud of their Ladin language and culture;

however they are open to innovation and modernity.

The three main towns of the valley - Ortisei, S. Cristina

and Selva Gardena - boast picturesque old town centres

and each offer high-end holidays with comfortable

hotels, cosy cafes, elegant shops and modern facilities

to suit all needs. Val Gardena, a popular tourist destina-

tion, offers everything you need for a relaxing stay full

of discoveries, with one of the most beautiful landscapes

beyond compare, wrapped by the magnificent backdrop

of the Dolomites.

“Bënunì te Gherdëina!” - Welcome to Val Gardena!

Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva Gardena - the three main

towns of the valley - charm visitors with their distinctive

mix of Ladin culture, Tyrolean traditions and the Italian

Dolce Vita.

Carving tradition

In S. Cristina, you can see the world’s largest nativity

scene carved by a team of local sculptors. The permanent

exhibit UNIKA is open all year round and can be found at

the entrance to Ortisei. UNIKA is dedicated to the art of

wood carving in Val Gardena. Aside from viewing the

collections, it is also possible to watch the artists at work.

In autumn, UNIKA hosts a temporary exhibit of wood

carving and sculptures.

AutumninValGardena

As the days become shorter, the air becomes crisper

and the light begins to change, the Val Gardena Dolomites

start to embrace the colours of autumn making a last call

for open air walks in pleasant company.

Hues of yellow, orange and red mark the arrival of autumn

and create a dramatic contrast against the deep blue

sky, whereas the harsh temperatures up on the mountain

passes confirm that winter is just around the corner.

Yet warm rays of sun still reach the valley, warming the

heart and soul.

Guided botanical and nature outings are available for

those who want to have a closer look at the flora and

fauna. There are also excursions accompanied by local

experts to spot wildlife - it is always a thrilling experience

to hear the rutting call of a stag, or especially at dawn to

come across a rabbit or a roe deer.

Törggelen

Autumn is the time for Törggelen:

a jubilant gathering to feast on wholesome

traditional dishes like Surfleisch, pork ribs,

sausages, sauerkraut and dumplings while

sipping a glass of Nuier, new wine. For dessert,

there are roasted chestnuts and the homemade

jam or chestnut cream filled Krapfen,

a must for any sweet tooth.

Back in the 17th century, when the first families began to

try their hand at wood carving, no one could have ever

imagined that the Val Gardena style of wood carving

would become known throughout the world. In time,

crèche figures, toys, figures and altars began to appear:

the imagination of the artisans knew no bounds. Since

then, the art of wood carving has become a tradition and

has been handed down from generation to generation.

On one hand, today’s lifestyle is a bit different and in re-

cent decades the main source of income is based on the

tourist industry. On the other hand, diligence, persever-

ance, cohesion and respect for traditions are priorities

still held high amongst the local people.

Just 70 years ago, most of the people of Val Gardena

were farmers and lived on high altitude farms around

the Sella and the Sassolungo Group. They tended to

their pastures and cultivated where they could along the

steep hillsides, and ponderously cared for their crops.

Val Gardena folklore festival

Every year, the first Sunday of August, the Val Gardena

folklore festival is held: men, women and children all

dressed in magnificent costumes, cheerfully participate in

the traditional parade. In collaboration there are perfor-

mances by local choirs, folkloristic dances and delicious

specialties of the local cuisine.

Hurrahforskiing!

Those who come to Val Gardena to ski, literally are spoilt

for choice, as hundreds of kilometres of slopes twisting

through the magnificent landscape and suitable for be-

ginners, advanced skiers and professionals are waiting

on them.

The ski resorts of Val Gardena are equipped with the

most modern uphill facilities and are part of the Dolomiti

Superski, the largest alpine skiing circuit, possessing

a total of 450 lift facilities and 1,220 km of ski runs.

The German website skiresort.de, unparalleled in the

industry, has ranked Val Gardena as one of the top ten

ski areas of the world.

The 26 km of the famous Sellaronda, around the Sella

Group, can be done in only one day, crossing four moun-

tain passes and passing through four Ladin valleys, in

three separate provinces. A guaranteed fun-filled day.

Since December 2004, the underground funicular Val

Gardena Ronda Express in S. Cristina connects all the

ski areas of the valley. In addition, in only eight minutes,

the new funicular Rasciesa in Ortisei carries passengers

up to an altitude of 2,100 m, right in the heart of nature.

Südtirol Gardenissima

The ski season comes to an end with a unique

annual event, the giant slalom Südtirol Gardenissima,

where the aces of skiing launch themselves from the

top of Seceda (2,518 m) covering the 6 km slope in just

3.40 minutes and overcoming an altitude difference

of 1,033 m - a challenge even for the pros!

Charmofwinter

It’s wonderful to walk in this enchanted scenery. You

don’t need much: just a pair of snowshoes, two ski or

hiking poles and… off you go! For those who prefer a bit

more verve, they can rent a sled, then take the funicular

up to Rasciesa and come speeding back down the 6 km

sled run. Even cross-country skiers will marvel over the

kilometres of the modern cross-country ski centre Monte

Pana and the Nordic Active Park in Vallunga.

And finally, a horse-drawn sleigh ride is by far the most

romantic way to admire the charm of winter.

And what could be better than stopping by one of the

traditional huts to enjoy a hearty snack and relax in the

sun surrounded by spectacular views?

Every year, Mr. Winter and Mrs. Snow bestow their magic

touch on Val Gardena. They sprinkle the mountain tops

and cover the landscape with a thick blanket of snow

before they call upon the sun to brighten everything

with its warm rays.

Mar Dolomit pool

In the evening, when the day’s exertion starts to

set in, it’s incredibly relaxing to dive into warm waters,

enjoy a steam bath or stretch out on ergonomic beds…

Where? At Mar Dolomit, the pool and aquatic park

of Ortisei.

ValGardenacuisine

The cuisine of Val Gardena is a creative blend of tradi-

tional homemade dishes and Italian and international

inspired specialties. The choice of the establishment is

in itself a unique experience: you can choose from cosy

old fashioned wooden Stuben, Italian pizzerias, high end

restaurants and charming mountain chalets.

Active holidays are great, but between one activity and

another, one is sure to work up an appetite.

There is always something to discover in the cuisine of

Val Gardena, from Ladin recipes to Nouvelle cuisine to

tasty Italian dishes. The fundamentals are fresh local

ingredients, lots of creativity and the acclaimed Val

Gardena hospitality.

Just deciding what to eat can be an adventure: fresh fish

with a view on the Sassolungo, hearty dumplings in the

shadow of steep slopes or perhaps a refined yet refresh-

ing snack? There really is something for everyone. Typical dishes

Recently, there has been a revival of typical

dishes, such as crafuncins (spinach filled ravioli),

puessl (apple pancake) and bales de furmenton

(buckwheat dumplings).

The little wooden houses at the Christmas market in

S. Cristina are festively decorated for the occasion.

You can stroll through the market surrounded by beauti-

fully carved nativity scenes and figures, Christmas tree

decorations, candles, glassware and ceramics, and

enjoy a cup of hot mulled wine and some spicy ginger-

bread sweets, while nostalgic melodies of Christmas

can be heard throughout.

The people of Val Gardena undeniably have the art of

woodcarving in their blood, as demonstrated during the

traditional snow sculpture contest, where they compete

by creating magnificent compositions of ice and snow.

At the stroke of midnight, a dazzling fireworks display

bids farewell to the old year and greets the new year

with a jubilant “Bënunì!”.

As throughout all of South Tyrol, also Val Gardena is

embellished with that magical Christmas feeling and

rings in the New Year in style.

Torchlight shows

Particularly striking are the New Year’s Eve torchlight

shows, organized by the ski schools.

Expert ski instructors perform elegant yet thrilling

ThegemsofValGardena

In 1873, the writer Amelia Edwards defined Ortisei as the

“capital of Toyland”. The town welcomes its visitors at

the entrance of Val Gardena, at 1,236 m above sea level.

It is distinguished by its worldliness yet classic alpine

character and its attractive mixture of modern

and traditional architecture, as well as the ample choices

of sports, culture, art, gastronomy and shopping.

Farther up and on the sunny side on the valley, there is

S. Cristina, a small picturesque village at an altitude of

1,428 m. Surrounded by Monte Pana, Col Raiser and the

finish line of the World Cup slope Saslong, the tiny town

has won the hearts of mountain and winter sports enthu-

siasts, and just about anyone seeking a relaxing holiday.

At an elevation of 1,563 m, situated at the bottom of the

Sella Group and right in the heart of the renowned alpine

skiing circuit Dolomiti Superski, there is Selva Gardena.

A lively town at the end of the valley, well known for its

bars, restaurants, traditional chalets and all sorts of fun,

like parties, discos and après-ski.

The three main centres of Val Gardena - Ortisei, S. Cris-

tina and Selva Gardena - are just a mere 8 km apart from

each other. Each offers top-quality holidays throughout

the year. What really makes these villages stand out is

the magnificent natural landscape, their commitment

to culture and tradition, and the warm and courteous

hospitality.

The Railway of Val Gardena

The Ferata de Gherdëina - the Railway of Val Gardena -

was built during the First World War and for 44 years it

puffed along the tracks into the valley at 15 kph. Today,

the obsolete tracks have been replaced by a path that

follows the old route through the valley with occasional

old photographs along the way.
