Darren KingBranch Manager - Rockhampton

CoolDrive is excited to introduce Darren King, Branch Manager of CoolDrive’s newest branch located in Rockhampton.

Darren comes to CoolDrive after five years as Branch Manager of AED Rockhampton and over 20 years in the automotive electrical, spare parts and accessories industry in Rockhampton. Darren brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and local industry knowledge to the CoolDrive team. If you’re a customer in the Rockhampton area, call Darren and the team on: 07 4923 7333

Vegas, Qantas & Christmas!

New faces@ CoolDrive

I have just returned from visiting the SEMA automotive show in Las Vegas. It is a fantastic show for anyone with a genuine interest in cars, with everything from the latest in accessories, show cars, demos and art shows.

Prior to heading to SEMA, I had just returned from an extended holiday in the US with my family. Like me, my family fell in love with the US, it is a great country. They certainly have their economic problems, but what comes through repeatedly in discussions with people you meet there is their positive attitude that

they will do what they have to do to work through their problems themselves, without blaming world economies or expecting help from outside. Self belief and a positive attitude.

My return was somewhat hindered by the QANTAS grounding. I found myself on the telephone to a QANTAS agent trying to rebook me onto another airline, which he did. The agent was

incredibly

apologetic, calm and helpful.

In the end, I found it almost a positive experience and did my best not to make what was clearly not an easy time for him by staying calm myself. I told him so, to which he responded that he was certainly copping some abuse, but he appreciated my comments and was determined not to let events outside his control lower his standards of being professional and courteous. It made me realise what a difference having the right people with the right attitude, training and temperament makes to the customer’s experience. I only wish I had got his name. Recently I read a survey of Australia’s top CEO’s. The majority are quite positive

about the economic outlook for 2012. At Cooldrive, we certainly are positive about next year. We look forward to continuing to grow our branch network, our ranges and creating opportunities by being positive towards our customers, believing in ourselves and to make our business and service a better experience for our customers.

One way we have done that this year was the relaunch of our on-line presence with iShop2. We have also made our engine cooling and air conditioning range available on the Auto info electronic catalogue that many of our customers use. Our rotating range will be listed shortly too.

Once again, we are not sending out Christmas cards, choosing instead to donate the money spent on cards and postage to an overseas orphanage for disadvantaged children - on behalf of ourselves and our customers.

Finally, I would like to thank all our customers for the business that you chose to send our way this year, and to wish, from our family to yours, a very safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

John Blanchard, CEO.

Camp Quality ‘esCarpade’

Joe, pictured with CoolDrive Newcastle Branch Manager Steve Ruprecht

From the 15th- 21st of October, Joe Standing from National Transmission Parts took part in the 20th “Camp Quality esCarpade”, an annual event raising money for the children’s family cancer charity.

Taking off from Bendigo, the “esCarpade” takes competitors over 3,400km, with over 75% of the rally taking place on dirt, scrub, rock and sand.

Joe and his trusty Range Rover, decked out with a range of Jaylec products and proudly adorned with CoolDrive stickers, volunteered as a support vehicle/mechanic for the week long event, pulling Rolls Royce’s out of muddy bogs and fixing a

myriad of mechanical issues.

We would like to congratulate Joe, as well as the roughly 300 people who took part in the event in either competitive or support/organisational role, raising money for such a great cause.

The first generation XW10 Prius went on sale in Japan in 1997, making it the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. It was subsequently introduced to the worldwide market in 2001. The Prius is now sold in more than 70 countries and regions worldwide.

In 2004 the Prius was completely redesigned as a mid-size lift back, aimed at the market between the Corolla and the Camry, it was designated the XW20 second generation hybrid. The Prius uses an all-electric A/C compressor for cooling, which was an industry first at the time. Combined with a smaller and lighter NiMH battery, the XW20 is more powerful and more efficient than the previous model.

The XW30 is the third generation model and was introduced in 2010. It features a larger 1.8 litre petrol engine and combined with the

electric motor, produces approximately 100KW. The larger engine displacement allows for increased torque, reducing engine speeds, which in turn improves fuel economy. Thanks to its electric water pump, the Prius engine is the first automotive production engine that requires no accessory belts, which also further improves the fuel economy. Since its introduction, the third-generation model had surpassed sales of more than 1 million units worldwide by late September this year. Don’t forget, working on Hybrid vehicles can be dangerous. Make sure you take every precaution when undertaking any repairs as high voltages can be present.

Thanks to the electrically driven water pump the Prius does not use any belts therefore ensuring quieter operation. We stock the full range of quality Tru-Flow water pumps.

Evaporator EV3450 Prius XW30

This is a plate type coil similar to most late model Toyota models.

Receiver DrierRD4085 Prius XW30

As with all A/C systems, replacing the receiver drier is essential to the proper operation and maintenance of the Prius A/C system. Like most late model Toyotas, this is a cartridge type desiccant bag located on the side of the condensor and should be replaced anytime the system has been opened. Condensers

Cabin Filter FCF008 Prius XW20 Cabin filters are very important in ensuring clean, filtered air reaches the cabin at all times. In high dust areas or where pollens are a problem change the filter regularly to maintain optimum air flow and freshness. Located behind the glove box they are easily accessible for routine maintenance.

Compressors CM5620 Prius XW20CM5622 Prius XW30

The Prius electric compressor is a unique design incorporating a small scroll compressor driven by an electric motor. Extreme care must be taken when servicing as the electric motor produces over 200V A/C to drive the compressor. To ensure proper insulation between the motor and the internal parts of the scroll, DENSO has produced a special oil with a high level of insulation properties. Never mix any other oil in this compressor as the risks are substantial.

Remember any component on the Prius that is high voltage has an orange electrical lead and should be handled with extreme caution.

Compressor OilOG8011 ND11

We stock the only oil recommended by DENSO for use in the electric compressors. It is vitally important that this is not mixed with other oils due to its unique properties. Supplied in a handy 250cc can.We also stock a range of flush solutions when servicing is required and a fluoro dye when looking for those hard to find leaks. TO8037 is specifically designed for Hybrid vehicles

TX Valve TX1000

This is the familiar “Block” style valve located inside the evaporator assembly. Common problems include icing, blockage and leaking. Should be replaced when in doubt and whenever a compressor has been renewed.

Tim Blanchard had a jam packed weekend at the 2011 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, racing in both the Fujitsu Series in the #27 Jayco / CoolDrive Falcon and with David Reynolds in the #16 Stratco Commodore for the Championship Series.

Blanchard secured 6th place in both the first and second races of the Fujitsu Series. The start for Friday’s race was clean and Tim Blanchard slotted in behind Rod Jane on the run up the mountain. Tim was looking for a way past into the Chase, but finally got a run down the inside of the Falcon into Murray’s Corner on lap 2. The gap to the front pack however had opened up to around 5 seconds and from that point Tim ran a race largely by himself. ‘It was a pretty uneventful race,” explained Tim. “Once I cleared Jane, I could maintain the gap to the leaders, but they were simply too far down the road. I was pretty happy with how the car performed.”

Saturday’s Fujitsu race at Mt Panorama was a wild affair. Starting from sixth position on the grid, Tim Blanchard’s run almost ended at the greenlight as he

bogged the #27 Jayco / CoolDrive Falcon down, just managing not to stall. Importantly all the cars behind him managed to scramble around Blanchard as the field headed off.

Tim picked up speed, but was back in position 15 as the cars headed up Mountain Straight. Chaos was not far away as a number of cars clashed at the Chase, including Tim, who got across the sodden grass and back on track. The Safety Car was deployed and the cars ran another 3 laps before the restart. Blanchard was immediately on the move, passing Geoff Emery into turn 2, then set about gaining places as the race developed.

A storming drive with consistently fast laps saw Blanchard on the tail of David Wall with Mostret, Zukanovic & Jane battling in front of them for 7th place. Wall made a mistake at Reid Park clipping the wall and Blanchard pounced, but not without his own brush with the concrete a few metres further down the road. He then got past Jane & Mostret who were intent on putting each other off the road and secured 6th position on Lap 10.

“The start was terrible! I was busy trying to get the car back up to speed and obviously hoping not to get someone crashing into the rear of me!’ said Tim. “We had a great

car today, so I just had to go for every opportunity to make up for that start.

Thankfully, some of the guys I was battling with were determined to take each other out so I had to thread the needle and pounce.”

After round 5 of the 2011 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, Tim Blanchard sits in 5th place overall with two rounds to run. The Bathurst round was won by

Andrew Thompson from David Russell and Jack Perkins.

In his first ever Bathurst 1000km race, Tim Blanchard continued his

great run with David Reynolds in the Stratco Kelly Racing Commodore with a top 20 place. As recent years have shown, the race runs on a knife edge right to the finish, with just a car length separating the winning car of Garth Tander from Craig Lowndes.Starting in the top 10, the #16 Stratco Commodore ran solidly in the lead group until the first round of pit stops. Tim was in the car on lap 25 and set about consolidating the car’s position. After settling into some good lap times, Tim sat in 13th place. He pitted on lap 40 when he joined nearly the whole field in pit lane after a Safety Car was deployed. The car continued to hover around P13 for the next long stint, and Tim pitted again from P11 on Lap 64 - again under a Safety Car period. Blanchard was back in the car for the next stint, but ran into trouble just one lap after the pit stop with a loose electrical cable to the alternator.

This was the turning point as the #16 Commodore fell off the lead lap with the extra stop. From that point, Blanchard and Reynolds fought hard, eventually getting back on the lead lap, but nearly two thirds of the Mt Panorama circuit behind the leaders.

Eventually Reynolds crossed the line in 19th place to give the combination a 100% finishing record in the two major 2011 V8 Supercar endurance races. “I am a little disappointed but glad to get my first Bathurst under my belt,” said Tim. “The car had good pace but we had an issue with the alternator cable. If it wasn’t for that I think we really could have given the Top 10 a shake up.

My first Bathurst was not by any means a disaster but, the potential was there for a great result.”

The race was won by Tander / Percat from Lowndes / Skaife and Tim’s Kelly racing team mates Murphy and Simonsen.

In a great initiative to provide young AC mechanics a significant leg up in their AC training, John Maddock from Wodonga Auto Air has designed and produced an air conditioning training simulator based on the components of a Holden Commodore VY air conditioning system. This exciting system has opened John’s business to a whole new area....no more quiet time. This training aid will simulate most electrical and refrigerant faults. Full computer integration (OBD connector) allows for diagnostic scan tools to be used to help perform electrical diagnosis. These faults include:

1) Volt Drop2) Open / Sort Circuit 3) Low Refrigerant / High Refrigerant4) Refrigerant Blockages

The simulator is powered by 240V, making it ideal for any training room.

CoolDrive are proud to support John in his entrepreneurial effort, which will help educate many future automotive air conditioning specialists. For more information on the training simulator please contact John at Wodonga Auto Air, on (02) 6024 7888.

Sanden Australia has supplied compressors to us that will have a slightly different appearance – relevant part numbers are:

• CM7863 (model 8031)• CM7887 (model 8034)• CM7862 (model 8030)• CM7931 (model 8035)

Sanden Australia has had difficulty receiving stock from their Japan manufacturing facility – Japanese industry remains on restricted hours of operation as power supply is rationed.

The recently received compressors are manufactured in the Sanden Singapore facility. This is an OE/Genuine Sanden facility and compressors supplied are 100% genuine.

The variations are –• Carton design and labelling (clearly stating that the compressor is manufactured in Singapore)• Sticker on compressor (model is S8031, not 8031 – simply referring to Singapore manufacturing)• There is an information leaflet inserted in all Singapore manufactured cartons.

These compressors are NOT Jayair by Sanden “J” series compressors. The J series are Shanghai manufactured. All Australian distributors will be receiving Singapore manufactured product for the above listed numbers until further notice. In the future, the Singapore sourced part # range may expand or some splined shaft compressors may be sourced via OE/Genuine USA Sanden manufacturing facilities – advance notice will be provided. If this issue is raised by customers – reassure them that they are receiving genuine Sanden compressors.

Poor cooling performance of the Mini R50/R52/R53 (Cooper S) air-con. system

With the above-mentioned vehicles, a faulty evaporator temperature sensor can lead to poor cooling performance of the air-conditioning system.

Before the sensor is replaced (see drawing ‘A’), an air conditioning service unit should be used to check the pressures in the system and the refrigerant levels should also be checked if necessary.

The sensor can be checked using a diagnostic unit and the measured value blocks are then read out. If the value displayed (e.g. -30°C) is implausible, faulty cabling or a faulty sensor can be assumed. Alternatively, the resistance values of the sensor can be checked using a multimeter and compared with the reference values.

The sensor has been modified by the vehicle manufacturer.

As we’ve done in previous years, CoolDrive will be donating the money we would previously have spent printing and sending christmas cards to those less fortunate than ourselves. This year the donation will be going to the “Cambodia Save the Children Orphan Centre”. There are roughly 25 children at the orphanage ranging in age from 4 to 12 years. Many of the children’s parents have passed away from the HIV virus and many come from families where the parent or parents are simply unable to bring them up. The donation will go towards education, health services and HIV and AIDS prevention programs at the centre.

Western Australian based customers dominated the competitions, picking up two firsts and a second. Brett from Natrad Morley was the winner of the AFL competition, he can be seen above with his CoolDrive representative Richard Jones awarding him his brand new 50” HD TV.

The winner of the NRL competition was Peter from Yilgarn Auto Electrics, with second place going to John from Ballajura Auto Electrics in Malaga, WA.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the competition, we look forward to running it once again in 2012.
