Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Carers, Thank you for the continuing friendly welcome I have received as incoming Principal of Tuart Hill Primary School. I love nothing more than meeting the students, supporting our teachers and chatting to you. It is such a pleasure when you introduce yourself to me, and I am beginning to learn names, families and classes. Attendance

Birthdays and attendance: The best gift is a bright future!

It is tempting to spoil our children with extra special attention on their birthday, but staying away from school for the day is not a gift. Arrange all the fun for after school hours or the closest weekend to the date or ask their teacher for a small acknowledgement of this special day. In the eighteen years that children are at school, birthday absences alone would tally to over two weeks.

NAIDOC Day

This year our NAIDOC celebration will take place on Friday 3 August. The 2019 theme for Naidoc Week was ‘Because of Her we Can’, which in addition to honouring Aboriginal women, can also include honouring ‘mother earth’. In an attempt to build some understanding of the term ‘connection to country’ we are seeking to learn more about the landscape of Tuart Hill and the surrounding areas prior to settlement. Students will be participating in a range of activities including: reading Tuart Dwellers by Jan Ramage, creating a Tuart Tree mosaic, painting Aboriginal animals and designing a Yarning Mat.

Book Week Parade

To celebrate Book Week we will be having a costume parade on Friday 24 August. The Book Week theme this year is “Find Your Treasure”. We encourage students to dress up as a character from a book that they treasure. The parade will commence at 8:45 in the hall. Prizes will be awarded and parents are welcome to attend.

University Students Partnerships

We welcome Frieda and Teagan who will begin their placement at THPS next week. They will be at school on Tuesdays. Hello! I’m Frieda and I am a provisional psychologist completing my Masters of Psychology (Professional) at Curtin University. I have a keen interest in working with children; I’m currently working as an early interventionist with young children with Autism. My previous research involvement includes an Honours’ thesis that explores the lived experiences of parents and carers of children who use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). In the future I would like to explore a career in educational and developmental psychology. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at Tuart Hill and getting involved in the amazing opportunities here.

Hi, my name is Teagan and I am currently studying my Masters degree in Psychology at Curtin University. A little bit about me... In my spare time, I love to take my dog for a walk, play netball and go out for breakfast with my friends. Working in a school environment has always been a keen interest of mine and I am excited to start my placement at Tuart Hill Primary School and get to know all the wonderful students, staff and wider school community!

If you are interested in further details on their role in the school or possible assistance for your child, please see Beverly Innes, Principal.

Parent Coffee & Chat

After each assembly we would like to invite all family members to join the student leaders in the alfresco area for a tea or coffee, a bite to eat, and a chat. It is a great opportunity to have an informal chat with representatives from Admin, the School Board, and P&C Association. The student leaders would also appreciate your feedback to some of their focus questions. We look forward to seeing you after our next assembly on 03 August which is to be hosted by Room 6.

Health Promotion – Morning Routine for School: tips!

How things go at home in the morning can set the tone for the day ahead. A predictable and positive morning routine for school can help children arrive at school feeling calm, well fed and ready to make the most of the first few hours of the day. Morning routine for school: the whys and hows Children don’t understand time in the same way as adults. This can make school mornings a stressful time of day for families. Staying calm and being organised in the morning will help you all feel positive about the day ahead. On the other hand, fighting with children in the morning makes it harder for your child to enjoy school and for you to work well. It even increases the risk of you having an accident at work. The most useful way to reduce morning chaos is to set up a morning routine. Sticking to a morning routine for school helps your children predict what’s coming, and remember what they need to do. Here are ideas to take some of the pressure out of school mornings – even if things don’t always go smoothly! Planning ahead for school mornings The first step in your morning routine for school is to think about what you need to do and work out a plan for doing it. You’ll probably find that you and your child can do many things the night before. Here are some ideas: Try to find out the night before (or even earlier) if there’s something special happening at school the

next day. Think about having a weekly schedule or calendar with reminders of what your child needs to take

to school each day – for example, library books, sports clothes, show and tell, and so on. You can keep this on the fridge so everyone knows what’s happening.

Organise lunches and get breakfast things ready for the morning rush. Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, and helps your child to concentrate better at school.

Get your child to have a bath or shower the night before. This means you won’t have to worry about this in the morning.

You might know something is going to come up that could cause conflict, like your child not wanting to eat breakfast, or wanting to wear sneakers rather than school shoes. Talk about it the night before when everybody has time and you’re all less likely to be stressed.

Think about getting ready for your day the night before as well, to help ease time pressure in the morning.

Try to read school newsletters and check bags for notes the night before. You could also try to prepare clothes, sign school notes, and get school bags ready the night before. Your morning routine for school: tips Rushing can really increase everyone’s stress levels, so it helps to give yourself a bit more time in the morning. One of the best ways to do this is to get up 15-30 minutes earlier. Here are more tips to take the stress out of mornings: Think about an alarm for children who find it hard to wake up or don’t like getting out of bed.

Tackle the morning as positively and as optimistically as you can. Good moods can be infectious. One way to do this is by focusing on the positive aspects of your children’s behaviour and praising them – for example, ‘Great to see you eating some toast’.

Give your children calm, clear instructions about what you want them to do, and follow up with specific praise as soon as they start to cooperate. You might need to remind younger children more often about what they’re meant to be doing and when. Simple ‘to do’ checklists, even with pictures, can help.

As your children get older and more capable, encourage them to do more for themselves. For example, an eight-year-old can get dressed on his own, make his own breakfast, and tidy up after himself. A five-year-old can do things like putting his lunch box in his bag.

Cut down on distractions like television, tablets and other devices. Many families have a rule about no screen time in the morning. Think about leaving screens off, unless screen time is a special treat for being ready on time.

Try not to give your children extra attention for arguing, whining or stalling. Even negative attention is an incentive for them to keep going with this behaviour.

Make it fun – for example, try our ‘Beat the buzzer’ game to encourage your child to be ready on time. School Admin Team

Class News

A Sterling effort written by Roving Reporter Annette Evans I'm Sterling, Perth's most handsome and talented detector dog. That was my claim to fame until a few weeks ago when it was suggested that I take a not-so-early retirement. Usually we detector dogs retire around 6 to 8 years, but obviously my superlative skills made it impossible for me to be replaced earlier. My achievements included the screening of several hundred thousand passengers and detection of countless biosecurity risk items. I'm a versatile, multi-tasking Labrador and I've worked at Perth and Brisbane airports, mail gateways and at various seaports. My nose has sniffed out seeds, plant cuttings, fruit and vegetables, eggs and meat. I'm so on top of my game that when I once detected a hamburger, I immediately wolfed it down to ensure the biosecurity risk was neutralised. One of the benefits of retirement was being able to visit Tuart Hill Primary School with handler Jodie Nugent, and educate the kids about my work. Working dogs aren't permitted to do this, but being a new retiree opened the door to this opportunity. I gave them a demonstration of my amazing sniffing skills and my detector dog routine. I could tell the kids were impressed with my abilities, and even more so when my Detector Dog Operations (DDO) Tech Supervisor Helen Stathy, regaled them with a litany of my lifetime accomplishments. To give perspective on my visit, Senior Biosecurity Officer Vicki Matuzik, gave an overview of what our department does and why it is crucial to Australia. Those kids are future biosecurity warriors! I could tell the teachers were suitably impressed too. In appreciation of the kids showing me appropriate admiration and respect, I let them pat and hug me and join in the photo shoot. You can see the picture of me with Ruby, one of the great students I met on the day. It was a fitting end to my illustrious career.
