President’sMessageDear Fellow Alumni,

Shortly after spring arrived here in the northeast, the Albany Medical College campus was alive with alumni from all over the country attending Reunion Weekend 2016. One month later, we experienced all of the splendor and emotion of the 178th Albany Medical College Commencement. I would like to take a moment to share with you some of my personal highlights from these wonderful celebrations.

While welcoming back our alumni from Maine to California, we kicked off Reunion Weekend with our Distinguished Alumnus lecture delivered by Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins, III, Class of 1969, a world-renowned neurosurgeon, who led us on a journey of his exemplary career in

catheter-based treatment of neurovascular disease and stroke as the founder and CEO of the Gates Vascular Institute in Buffalo, New York. His lecture was terrific, and I am grateful for his nomination and the work of the Nominations Committee in selecting Dr. Hopkins—such a well-deserved honor.

The weekend continued with a full schedule, including individual class gatherings, campus tours, and academic sessions, where I enjoyed hearing from alumna Dr. Julie Pilitsis, Class of 1998, chair of the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics. You can learn more about Dr. Pilitsis and her impressive work in this issue (see page 28). Our weekend capstone—the Reunion Gala —was held at the New York State Museum with dinner and dancing. It was a great setting for the lively crowd gathered to celebrate with fellow classmates and alumni.

I had the honor of addressing the Class of 2016 at Medical Student Awards Day, encouraging them to pursue work-life balance and reminding them that their alumni family is here to help them stay connected to their Albany Medical College network. The following day, a beautiful day of warmth and sunshine greeted us as the procession of our graduates entered the Saratoga Performing Arts Center for Commencement. It was especially gratifying for me to lead our medical students as they took the Hippocratic Oath. I believe it is wise for each of us, as health care providers, to reflect on the significance of the oath and remember how important integrity and respect for our patients are to our daily lives. Commencement is a milestone not only for our graduates but also for their families and friends, and to our faculty who welcomed our graduates as new colleagues.

We are all looking forward to our fall regional events in New Haven, CT and Washington, D.C., and Seattle, WA, and are planning to travel to other regions throughout the country with Dean Verdile this year. Please make every effort to join us if we’re in your region.

A reminder to those of you who graduated in year ending in a 2 or a 7 that plans are already being made in anticipation of another fantastic Albany Medical College Reunion Weekend to be held April 28 through April 30, 2017. If you have never attended Reunion, 2017 is the year you should join us!

Dean’sMessage

This has been a terrific year so far at Albany Medical College. In March, I was honored to share Match Day with our medical students. I am always touched by the excitement in the room as they find out where they will begin their graduate medical education.

Our graduates continue to be matched in highly competitive institutions, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and Columbia University Medical Center. I am also proud to say that 20 members of the Class

of 2016 will stay at Albany Medical Center Hospital for their residencies. The support we receive from alumni is an integral part of our students’ success—and for that we are grateful to you.

Not long after Match Day, in April, we had an enjoyable Reunion Weekend, where I was pleased to catch up with many of you. Commencement topped it all off in May. In addition to awarding diplomas to more than 200 graduates, we welcomed an inspirational keynote speaker, Brian Druker, M.D., whose research to develop Gleevec has saved countless lives and opened the door for more targeted cancer therapies. Dr. Druker, director of the Oregon Health and Science University’s (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute, was a recipient the 2013 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research.

In August, we will welcome the Class of 2020 to the College. And, in September, we will present the $500,000 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research for 2016.

I would like to let you know about changes made to my leadership team partly due to the departure of Elizabeth Higgins, M.D. (Associate Dean of Student Affairs), and the upcoming departure of Jonathan Rosen, M.D. (Associate Dean of Medical Education) but also in my effort to better integrate the health care delivery system at Albany Medical Center.

From 1989 -2013, he was chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Buffalo (UB). In 2012, Dr. Hopkins was named SUNY Distinguished Professor, the highest academic award in the SUNY system. He is a graduate of Rutgers University and is a member of the Albany Medical College Class of 1969. Dr. Hopkins completed a surgical internship at Case Western Reserve and a residency in neurology and neurosurgical training at UB.

Dr. Hopkins is a pioneer in the catheter-based treatment of neurovascular disease and stroke and has spearheaded one of the largest and most respected stroke treatment centers—Jacobs Institute and Gates Vascular Institute—in the world where new innovative methods have been developed to reverse acute stroke in many patients. He has trained a new generation of neurosurgeon leaders skilled in catheter-based technology for minimally invasive neurosurgery.

An advocate of cross-specialty and multidisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Hopkins fostered the creation of the Toshiba Stroke & Vascular Research Center, bringing together physicists, chemists, aerospace engineers, neurosurgeons, cardiologists and radiologists to study the neurovascular circulation and develop innovative technologies and approaches for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of

neurovascular diseases. Dr. Hopkins conceived a new way to organize the multidisciplinary treatment of vascular disease and brought experts from around the world together to design the Gates Vascular Institute and then recruited the necessary partners to bring the Jacobs Institute and Gates Vascular Institute to life. He serves as chairman of the board of the GVI and President/CEO of the Jacobs Institute and its Center for Innovation in Medicine (CIM).

A proponent of the global approach to revascularization for the improvement of outcomes for patients with vascular disease, Dr. Hopkins has served on the faculty of numerous symposiums nationally and internationally and each year hosts multidisciplinary seminars along with industry leaders focused on assessing and managing complications associated with minimally invasive catheter-based interventions.

Dr. Booss is a native of New York City and a graduate of Oberlin College. He is a proud a member of the Albany Medical College Class of 1965. Dr. Booss is Professor of Neurology-Emeritus at Yale University and a world-renowned neurologist and neurovirologist.

Dr. Booss’ clinical work focused on multiple sclerosis and viral encephalitis, and the neurology of HIV/AIDS. From 1993 until his retirement in 2005, he was appointed as the National Program Director for Neurology in the Department of Veterans Affairs. During his tenure and immediately following, Dr. Booss persuaded Congress to legislate Centers of Excellence separately for veterans with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and epilepsy. His office implemented the structure of national VA systems of care for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

During the early 1980’s, Dr. Booss worked with a group of Yale-New Haven Hospital specialists on a mysterious and fatal disease that had recently emerged. Along with his colleagues—and with those afflicted—he endured the very dark days of the epidemic until the advent of triple therapy and protease

inhibitors in 1994. He volunteered as the neurologist for Leeway, a long term care facility for persons living with HIV. He subsequently served on the Board of Directors, as long term care became critical as the HIV/ AIDS epidemic evolved. Following formal retirement in 2005, Dr. Booss continued his voluntary service until 2010. He also established a voluntary neurology clinic at a federally qualified community based healthcare clinic, Hill Health in New Haven. The clinic was made part of the rotation for Yale Neurology residents. It was hoped that, in addition to their training, the house staff would gain appreciation for the plight of those marginalized by society.

Dr. Booss is the recipient of multiple awards and honors and has served on the committee for the Connecticut State Legislature concerning medical necessity and on the Global Advisory Committee for AmeriCares, a global medical relief organization. He is the co-author of “To Catch A Virus” and co-editor of Neurovirology. He continues his advocacy for persons with MS, serves on advisory boards for veterans’ research and epilepsy, and is an honorary member of the Board at Leeway. He also serves on an advisory committee for the Dean of Students at Yale. Dr. Booss remains steadfastly grateful for the strong foundation he received at Albany Medical College for all aspects of his work.

The Alumni Association is proud to recognize Dr. Sutter as the 2016 Exemplary Award recipient. The Exemplary Alumni Support Award recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated unwavering dedication and philanthropic support of Albany Medical College.

A member of the Class of 1976 of Albany Medical College, Dr. Sutter completed his residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan in Los Angeles, CA.

Dr. Sutter, and his wife, Vera, are extraordinary advocates of Albany Medical College and have a shared commitment to

supporting Dr. Sutter’s alma mater. This year, they stepped forward with the “Sutter Challenge,” the first ever matching gift program, dedicated to the Alumni Annual Fund. Dr. and Mrs. Sutter recognize the importance of the Alumni Annual Fund’s broad impact for providing critical funding for financial aid, teaching, research and technological advancement. In addition in 2012, they established the Vera J. and Gary L. Sutter, M.D. ’76 Scholarship Fund that has provided significant financial support for our medical students. Dean Vincent P. Verdile, M.D. ’84 states, “I am deeply grateful for Gary and Vera’s philanthropic commitment and leadership. They set a wonderful example for our entire alumni community.”

Dr. Sutter has served on the Alumni Association Board since 2014. He and Mrs. Sutter live in southern California and greatly enjoy spending time with their two children and grandchildren.

The Humanitarian Award was created in 1995 to recognize alumni of Albany Medical College who excel, beyond daily practice, in serving mankind.

Wilson Crone, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Crone is associate professor and Basic Science Coordinator at the Center for Physician Assistant Studies at Albany Medical College. An Angier B. Duke Scholar at Duke University and graduate of Duke Medical School, he subsequently pursued a Ph.D. at the University of California, Riverside with the support of a Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellowship and individual

National Research Service Award. Dr. Crone moved to the Capital District for postdoctoral

study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He began his involvement with the physician assistant program—at that time jointly sponsored by Albany Medical College and Hudson Valley Community College—and was recognized with the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Since moving with the PA program to Albany Medical College, Dr. Crone has been honored by admission to the Sosa Academy and with the Helen H. Molinari Award for Graduate Encouragement and Merit. Dr. Crone continues in his efforts to integrate basic science underpinnings to clinical encounters for physician assistant students in disciplines ranging from anatomy, microbiology, pathophysiology, to evidence-based medicine.

As one of the longest- tenured faculty of the PA program, Dr. Crone has been selected for the award because he consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to mentoring students and is resolutely firm in his excellence in teaching.

Mara A. McErlean, M.D. Mara A. McErlean, M.D. was raised in Washington D.C., and attended college in Minnesota. She is a 1984 graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. She subsequently completed two years of training in internal medicine in Minneapolis before completing her emergency medicine training at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, where she served as chief

resident. She is board-certified in emergency medicine and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. McErlean joined the faculty of Albany Medical College in 1988, the same year Albany Medical Center was granted accreditation for a three-year training program in emergency medicine. The program was the first emergency medicine training program in New York State.

During her tenure at Albany Medical Center, Dr. McErlean has served in many capacities within the department of emergency medicine. She has been clerkship director for the required fourth year emergency medicine rotation, research director, associate residency director and emergency department medical director. Between 2002 and 2010, she was chief of service and chair of the department.

Albany Medical College opened its Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center (PSCCC) in 2011. There are many College faculty members, particularly within the departments of anesthesia, surgery and emergency medicine who are adept at developing training sessions and scenarios at the Center, as well as providing feedback to students, residents and faculty. Dr. McErlean became the director of the Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center in March 2013.

In the past few years, under Dr. McErlean’s leadership, the Center has brought technology and human interaction together in hybrid scenarios, combining the use of simulation mannequins with standardized patients who portray family members or loved ones - encouraging students to consider family dynamics, preparing them to communicate difficult news, and helping to shape them into compassionate physicians.

In 2015, nearly 1,000 separate educational sessions were held and more than 35,000 student contact hours were completed, an increase of approximately 20 percent over the prior year. Requests from other departments and the community also have increased. The College now has 85 standardized patients between the ages of 18 and 78.

FRANKC.MAXON,JR.,M.D.ALUMNIAWARD

Erin Corsini, M.D.’16 Erin Corsini was raised in the small Boston suburb of Hopkinton, MA. Her mother, an ICU nurse, often shared compelling patient stories and medical advances that sparked an early interest in medicine and science for Erin. A graduate of Boston College, Erin was a chemistry major with a premedical concentration.

Before starting medical school, Erin worked with the Framingham Heart Study conducting four years of clinical research at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Division of Cardiac Imaging. Erin developed a significant interest in clinical research, resulting in more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts. It is largely because of this experience that she hopes to pursue a career in academic medicine.

In her first year at Albany Medical College, Erin was elected Class President —a role she has held for four years. In her third and fourth years, the Student Council elected her to also serve as Executive Council President. In this capacity, she has served as an ambassador and representative for the entire student body, as well as liaison to the College administration and Alumni Association. She notes that she enjoys the connectedness she shares with her class, the student body, and the administration in her elected role, and feels it is a true privilege to serve the students in this capacity. Erin plans to pursue a career in general surgery, and will begin her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX next year, with a dedicated two-year research track.

Erin is tremendously humbled to be the recipient of the Frank C. Maxon, Jr., M.D. Alumni Award, and wishes to express her gratitude for the love, support, and wisdom imparted by countless Albany Medical College faculty and staff over the last four years.

GRADUATESTUDENTAWARD

Brandy Eggan, Ph.D. Candidate Brandy began her graduate studies in 2012 in the Center for Neuropharmacology and Neuroscience. She graduated summa cum laude from Elmira College majoring in biology-chemistry and psychology. Upon completion of her Ph.D. next spring, Brandy wishes to become a college dean.

While working under her thesis advisor, Dr. Sarah McCallum, Brandy is investigating the role of an alternate reward pathway in the brain as a novel target for treating drug addiction. She recently published her work in the Journal of Behavioral Brain Research and has presented at numerous conferences across the country including in New York City, Chicago, and San Diego. At Albany Medical College, her research has received awards for excellence for two consecutive years.

Brandy was recently elected to her third year as the graduate student body president and she serves on a number of committees. In addition to lecturing at Albany Medical College, Brandy also volunteers at the Albany Police Athletic League where she mentors children, hoping to spark their interest in science. In her free time, Brandy runs in many local road races, plays in a volleyball league, and—what she enjoys doing most—is a musician with local bands. Currently she plays the clarinet for the Colonie Town Band and Boonville Village Band and has played saxophone with the Swing Docs, a local swing band.

Ajay Major, M.D. ’16 Ajay Major, MBA is an entrepreneur, aspiring physician-journalist and graduate of the Class of 2016 at Albany Medical College with a Distinction in Health Systems Analysis and a Distinction in Advocacy. .

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Union College in 2012 as part of the Leadership in Medicine Program, an eight-year combined-degree BS/MBA/ M.D. program with Union Graduate College and Albany Medical College. He was the editor-in-chief of the Union College Concordiensis for two years and founded in-Training, the online magazine for medical students, in April 2012. Ajay delivered a main stage talk at the Stanford Medicine X conference in September 2015 on how peer-managed publications like in-Training can be used to build community among medical students worldwide.

He is also a medical student activist and works with Students for a National Health Program, Physicians for Human Rights, and the Student National Medical Association on student-and patient-centered reforms. His research interests are in the medical humanities, innovation in medical education, and simulation medicine. Ajay began his residency in internal medicine at the University of Colorado School Of Medicine in Aurora, CO in July.

Aleena Paul, M.D. ’16 Aleena Paul, MBA is a graduate of the Class of 2016 at Albany Medical College with a Distinction in Health Systems Analysis and a Distinction in Advocacy.

During her time at the College, Aleena co-founded and served as editor-in-chief of in-Training, the online magazine for medical students. She worked as a tobacco cessation counselor and conducted research on ways to improve tobacco cessation services for inpatients. Aleena has been an active member of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA), serving as the National Chair of the Publications Committee for the past three years and as the 2013-2014 Student Division Regional Director of NY and NJ.

Aleena is a recipient of the 2014 Joseph Collins Foundation Scholarship, an award given to medical students who demonstrate an interest in the arts and letters, and the 2015 American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship. Aleena was recently selected to be a member of Albany Medical College’s Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Society chapters.

Aleena graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Union College in 2012 as part of the Leadership in Medicine program, majoring in biology and sociology, and subsequently obtained an MBA in Healthcare Management from Union Graduate College. She continues to develop her interests in the medical humanities, medical education innovation, and health advocacy. Aleena began her residency in internal medicine & pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine in Worcester, MA in July.

A rare find in the Archives, this 150 year old photo album contains individual photographs of the Class of 1866. The majority of the graduates from the Class of 1866 went on

to successful medical careers. One graduate that stands out not only for his medical career but also his other achievements is Dr. Charles S. Hazeltine (featured in the photo collage). Dr. Hazeltine practiced medicine and also established a successful wholesale drug business named Hazeltine & Perkins Drug Co. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also served for two years as the United States Consul to Milan having been appointed in 1893 by President Cleveland. On the 40th anniversary of his graduation, he wrote in a letter to a classmate, “I have a warm place in my anatomy for the Albany Medical College…I look back to the time of my medical studies as laying the foundation for that scientific thought and reading that has been pursued with interest to this day.”

Dr. Stain, who previously was professor and chair of surgery at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., with an appointment at Vanderbilt University, is a

nationally active surgeon who has served in leadership roles with the American Board of Surgery, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, Society of University Surgeons, Western Surgical Association, the Society of Surgical Chairs, Pacific Coast Surgical Association and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

Additionally, Dr. Stain also was elected to serve as chair of the national Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Resident Review Committee for Surgery.

“With Dr. Stain, Albany Med has a tremendous ambassador to the larger surgical community,” said Vincent Verdile, M.D., ‘84, The Lynne and Mark Groban, M.D. ’67, Distinguished Dean of Albany Medical College. “His leadership positively impacts the profession, as well as the patients and community Albany Med serves.”

We asked Dr. Stain to discuss the growth and changes to the department over the past 11 years.

HowdifferentwastheDepartmentofSurgerywhenyoustartedatAlbanyMedfromwhatitistoday?When I came to Albany to head the department in 2005, it was what you would call a traditional surgical department. We covered all of the basics—cardiac, urology, general surgery, etc.—and student education was solid. I was given the responsibility of supporting and growing existing divisions, while expanding the department as a whole. I was asked to add an additional seven surgeons in the first two years. We did that in the first several months, and, to date, I have recruited 70 new faculty positions. This has included important sub-specialty areas new to Albany Med, such as pediatric surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, endovascular surgery and bariatric surgery.

Additionally, neurosurgery was a division in my department, but it was granted departmental status in 2014 and is chaired by Alan Boulos, M.D. ’94. This was a monumental achievement that speaks volumes to the quality of surgeons, support staff and the dedication of the College and Hospital in ensuring our neurological and neurosurgical services are top-notch, including the implementation of a dedicated neuro ICU.

Chief of Surgery Edits Book on Surgical Ethics

In June, a collection of essays exploring ethically charged issues faced by surgeons was released. The book, entitled, “The SAGES Manual Ethics of Surgical Innovation” is co-edited by Dr. Steven Stain, chief of surgery and Henry and Sally Schaeffer Chair of Surgery at Albany Medical College, and Dr. Aurora Pryor and Dr. Phillip Shaddock. Alden March Bioethics Institute, and Dr. Richard Dal Col, M.D. ’82, vice president for medical affairs at Capital District Physician’s Health Plan are contributing writers to the manual.

AlbanyMedhashadanunprecedentedexpansionwiththeopeningofnewphysicianofficesandaffiliationswithregionalhospitalsandhealthgroups.HowhasthisaffectedtheDe-partmentofSurgery?Let me start with the expansion on campus. The new Patient Pavilion has been a tremendous asset to surgery, providing us with 20 new operating rooms that are truly among the most advanced available in the Northeast, along with the support of high-level ICUs and pre-operative and post-operative care. We have also expanded our surgical capacities at the South Clinical Campus, where we have had a 45 percent increase in ambulatory surgery cases. And our alumni who have been to the campus have probably seen our six-story Surgeons Pavilion, where we have our offices and conference rooms. I think the potential options for surgeons with Albany Med’s recent affiliations with Columbia Memorial and Saratoga Hospital are exciting as well for patients and learners.

Whathasbeentheimpactofthisgrowthonsurgicalmedicaleducation?Our medical students are required to do eight-week rotations in surgery in the third year. Four of those weeks are focused on general surgery, and the next four weeks encompass the student’s choice of surgical specialty. This exposes students to more potential career paths and a variety of patients.

With my affiliations with national organizations, I have also created opportunities for students to present research findings to their peers and to a national audience of surgeons. This has been very rewarding. I am gratified when I encounter at these forums Albany Med alumni or former residents who have risen to prestigious positions around the country.

Researchhasbeenimportantinyourcareer.Howhaveyouenhancedtheresearcharmofthedepartment?I continue to actively participate in clinical studies and encourage our residents and faculty to publish.

Working with the vascular surgeons, we have recently completed an article of ruptured aneurysms that is being published in the Annals of Surgery. Other areas of research in the Department have been in colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery and trauma. I hope these efforts will provide new opportunities for our students and residents to get involved in research. I am very pleased, the Department of Surgery hired a vice chair of research, for the first time in my tenure in the Department. Michael DiPersio, Ph.D., who had worked for many years in cancer research in the College. His focus on integrins and epithelial cell functions related to cancer and wound healing. The opportunity to for our students and residents to become actively involved in translational research could have profound effects for the development of the Department of Surgery.

Howhasthegrowthofminimallyinvasive,roboticandendovascularsurgeryaffectedthedepartment?Tremendously. We are leaders in these areas, and it exposes our students and residents to advanced surgical techniques. This includes use of the daVinci Robotic System for a wide variety of surgeries and the use endovascular techniques for stroke and aneurysm patients. It’s very exciting to see where surgery is going, and we will continue to remain in the forefront to provide future physicians and surgeons with the best experience possible.

Albany Medical College commencement ceremonies took place on May 26 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center

The College awarded 236 degrees at the ceremony, including

medical, Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, Nurse Anesthesiology and Bioethics, and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Science and Bioethics.

This year’s keynote speaker, Brian J. Druker, M.D., is an oncologist whose research to develop Gleevec has saved countless lives and opened the door for more targeted cancer therapies. Dr. Druker is director of the Oregon Health and Science University’s (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute, associate dean for oncology of the OHSU School of Medicine, and investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Dr. Druker was recognized with the 2013 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research.

Center for Nurse Anesthesiology Program Celebrates 65th Anniversary On Saturday, April 16, the Albany Medical College Center for Nurse Anesthesiology Program (CRNA) marked its program’s 65th anniversary with day-long workshops for alumni, faculty and staff featuring presentations by faculty, state educators and students on a variety of topics relating to the field of nurse anesthesiology. Following the talks, the group gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn, Albany Medical Center for a celebratory dinner.

Kimberly Kilby, M.D. ’03 named Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Kilby was recently named associate dean for academic affairs and student affairs at Albany Medical College. She will also serve as interim associate dean for medical education.

Healer’s Art Program Comes to Albany Medical College For the first time this spring, Albany Medical College offered the Healer’s Art course to first and second year medical students. Healer’s Art, developed in 1991, and now offered at more than 90 U.S. medical schools and medical schools around the world, seeks to keep meaning in medicine and preserve the human dimension of health care. In small group sessions, students explore issues of grief and dealing with loss and commitment to service and acknowledging the importance of self-care in enhancing patient care and preventing physician burn out. The course is sponsored by the Thomas and Nancy O’Connor Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society of Albany Medical College and is directed Dr. Heather Long, an attending physician and associate professor in the department of Emergency Medicine.

2016 Albany Brain BeeIn February, Albany Medical College’s department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics hosted the first Albany Brain Bee competition for area high schools to compete for a spot in the regional competition to be held in Baltimore, MD. Students ages 13 through 19 answered questions about the brain and neuroscience

Albany Symphony Orchestra and Albany Medical College PartnershipThe Alumni Association was extremely pleased to provide medical and graduate students with complimentary Albany Symphony Orchestra (ASO) tickets for the 2015-16 season. The students enjoyed concerts featuring masterpieces by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mahler and others and the much needed respite from their studies.

On Saturday, March 19, local alumni, faculty, staff and students gathered for dinner at the Fort Orange Club and a lively pre-concert conversation with David Alan Miller, ASO conductor, before attending the evening performance of “To Walk with Giants.”

AOA Visiting Professor L. Jeffrey Medeiros, M.D. was this year’s Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Visiting Professor. In addition to delivering the keynote address at the AOA Induction Dinner in March, Dr. Medeiros conducted surgical/pathology/oncology grand round presentations and round table discussions with students, residents and faculty while on campus.

Dr. Medeiros is professor and chair of the department of Hematopathology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.

Sharing Life Lessons through FoodRafael Kaplan, Class of 2018, student leader for the Cooks for a Cause Service Learning Program, worked with area elementary and middle school aged children this spring to teach practical culinary skills that would empower the children in the kitchen with new skills and self-assurance—ultimately benefiting the entire family. The medical student volunteers formed two “super hero themed” teams: the DC Justice League and

Marvel Avengers and worked with the youth to also teach the importance of team work and responsibility. “Through our mentorship and teaching we were able to visibly see a sense of pride and confidences develop among this at-risk population. It was a wonderful opportunity to give back to the Albany community that is fostering us and enabling us to become superb physicians,” said Kaplan.

Albany Medical College students Sara Zelman and Courtney Meyer, Class of 2019, connected with alumnus Dr. Thomas Burke, ’89, chief of the Division of Global Health and Human Rights in the department of emergency medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor at Harvard Medical School, after he spoke at the College about his career in global health and his current projects in Kenya.

Sarah and Courtney have spent more than six weeks living in a rural village, working on research and gaining clinical experience at the Sagam Community Hospital in Siaya County, Kenya this summer. They are recipients of The David R. Nalin, M.D. ’65 Endowed Fund for International Research at Albany Medical College established by alumnus, David R. Nalin, M.D.

“The Palate” Launches Albany Medical College student Ethan Cohen has launched

“The Palate,” an online publication for medical students to engage in conversation exploring the connections between nutrition and public health, and the health of patients, communities and medical students themselves. “The Palate” seeks to establish a unified medical student voice in the field of nutrition and public health and provide tools for medical

searching for a word to say

or a white coat glistening like a saint

shakes the chronic observer, her doctor,

who lingers and sways in the doorway

listening for a further complaint

with a bell that does not ring

swinging a stethoscope, stat slowed,

a wish to grant and one’s history to hold

in a glance, mimicking the sunken days

when their future was in their common past.

He took her to walk the metered halls

in countless steps, this new old guest

awaiting the fall but expecting the best

the stolid voice on call now lightly jests

to a woman who once cleaned his mess

and not the other way; and who today

forgoes pronouns, no possession frets

but the transpiration of their huddled breaths:

strongly coughed or meekly sighed

like a dubious goodbye

and (I) afraid to conflate this timeless haste

with the nervous clamor of medical gall.

Escaping the Wing and on hers rode

a draft of hope: against cancer’s reproach

to stay and subside under Taxol’s demise

outside the hospital, beside a life

“in-Training: Stories from Tomorrow’s Physicians” We are proud to announce the publication of in-Training: Stories from Tomorrow’s Physicians, a compendium of

peer-edited narratives written by medical students on humanism, our real-life patients, and the challenges of being a physician-in-training. The book is a collection of 102 manuscripts published on in-Training, the online magazine for medical students, since its inception in July 2012. All of the manuscripts were written and edited by medical students, and were chosen by the editors for their humanistic merit in authentically presenting the

challenges of being a physician-in-training.

Research Center Name Changes Reflect Evolving Mission To reflect the evolving missions of Albany Medical College, the four research centers within the College were recently renamed:

The Center for Cardiovascular Sciences is now the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology. (Director: Harold Singer, Ph.D.)

Julie Pilitsis, M.D. ’98, Ph.D.Howimportantisitforyoutoconductbothbasicandclinicalresearch?I went through the six-year BS/M.D. program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College, and graduated with distinction in research. I opted to pursue a neurosurgical residency at Wayne State University which had a Ph.D. integrated into the program. After completing a fellowship in functional neurosurgery, I joined UMass Memorial Health Center in Worcester, MA. While there, I became very involved in treating patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS), a surgical procedure in which electrical impulses are sent to the parts of the brain that control movement to help people with disorders like Parkinson’s disease. I pursued clinical research, but in order to understand mechanisms of stimulation, I needed to have the infrastructure for a basic science laboratory program as well. So I returned to Albany Medical College where leaders were able to make that happen.

Whatisyourmedicalspecialty?I am a neurosurgeon specializing in neuromodulation for the treatment of various movement disorders as well as chronic pain syndromes. In particular, we implant brain stimulators into the deep structures of the brain to achieve symptomatic relief

for diseases such as Parkinson’s, essential tremor and dystonia. Spinal cord stimulators are implanted into the spinal column both in the neck and lower back to achieve a percentage of pain reduction for those suffering with chronic conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome and failed back surgery syndrome, to name a few. The actual mechanism is not fully understood behind why stimulation works, but in pain it is thought to work by blocking abnormal firing of neurons that may be disrupting the normal neurocircuitry.

Doestheresearchaspectofyourcareerbenefityourcurrentpatients?A great deal of the research that my lab focuses on attempts to study and improve patient outcomes after surgery. We look at many different aspects of patient care not only immediately before and after surgery, but also in the long term to improve the entire patient experience. Recently, we developed and implemented a tool to provide our patients who suffer from psychological disorders better treatment after surgery. We also are currently looking at stimulation patterns in different patients to see how best to alleviate their pain. Each and every study that we conduct is intended to improve the quality of care that patients receive globally.

At Albany Medical College a goal has been to win grants and recruit faculty that link Albany Med’s clinical strength with our basic science strength in translational research.

In 2011, one such recruit was Julie Pilitsis, M.D. ’98, Ph.D., who holds a medical degree from Albany Medical College as well as a Ph.D. in neurophysiology from Wayne State University in Detroit. In 2015, Dr. Pilitsis, a practicing neurosurgeon, also assumed the role of chair of the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics, one of Albany Medical College’s four basic research hubs.

WhatisthecurrentfocusoftheDepartmentofNeuroscienceandExperimentalTherapeutics?We have exceptional strength and funding studying epilepsy, stroke, diabetes mellitus,

behavioral and neurodevelop-mental disorders, intracellular signaling, molecular pharma-cology, antidepressants, pain and Parkinson’s disease. We have specialized faculty in biostatistics, fluorescent

microscope systems, confocal laser scanning and green fluorescent protein staining. Overall, our department aims to further the field of neuroscience through education of scientists and

physician scientists, collaborative research locally and institutionally, and continued scientific advances that benefit public health in the Capital Region and beyond.

WhatotherbenefitscomefromAlbanyMed’sfocusontranslationalresearch?The benefits from translational research are endless. Not only does it promote advances in technology and techniques, but it gives physicians a better understanding of mechanisms and systems in order to better treat patients and provide more individualized treatment. By combining the basic sciences with clinical application, we are using our findings to tailor clinical research, and decreasing the time that it takes for patients to benefit from current laboratory findings. As a center dedicated to education, it is imperative that we are providing our students with the best tools to promote and apply their research to improve health care overall. In an effort to bring technological advances in medicine to our center, my department has recently partnered with the new Biomedical Acceleration and Commercialization Center (BACC) at Albany Med to advance biotechnologies. We are so fortunate to have such a great team of multidisciplinary professionals working at Albany Medical College, and by working collaboratively, we can give our patients the best treatment available.

On April 29, the department of Family and Community Medicine and the Alumni Association, hosted a presentation by Dr. Martinez, entitled, “Sports Medicine is the New Primary Care.” He is a family physician working with Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, CA. In addition to his practice, Dr. Martinez is the team physician with the USA Triathlon & assistant physician for Hawaii Ironman World Championships.

On May 19, the Albany Medical Center department of surgery welcomed Dr. Callery to present “Technical Considerations in Cholecystectomy” in a Grand Rounds forum. He is chief of general surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. A luncheon, hosted by the Alumni Association, was also held with Dr. Callery and the student Surgical Interest Group and fourth year students who have matched in surgery. The medical students and Dr. Callery had a lively discussion about surgical training, teamwork in the OR, patient care and work- life balance.

Shilpa Darivemula, Class of 2019Shilpa Darivemula was named American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) 2016-17 Artist in Residence. The Artist in Residence Award was started in 2015 by Studio AMWA to promote women members in the arts. The role of the artist in residence is to create an artistic project that is pertinent to AMWA and women in medicine. The art is displayed (or performed) at the following year’s annual meeting.

Shilpa’s training in Kuchipudi and her exposure to various traditional dances drove her towards movement. Kuchipudi is one of seven classical dances from India, a form that requires exquisite footwork, hand gestures and facial expressions to narrate stories of Hindu mythology.

Reunion Gift Inspires Others

When Dennis Brown’s father died from heart disease as his son was halfway through medical school, the faculty at Albany Medical College was there for him. Today, Dr. Brown says he is proud and grateful to be there for the College when he is needed.

“I will never forget how engaged and empathetic the College was during this difficult period of my family’s life,” said Dr. Brown. “My parents were the sole proprietors of our family business, so needless to say I had to return home on many occasions to run the business in my father’s absence. Albany Medical College supported me during these difficult times.”

In particular, he credits Dr. Jack Wolfe, who was chair of anatomy, and Dr. Paul Formel, head of cardiology, with the good advice to take care of family first and return to classes when possible.

With this support, Dr. Brown was able to manage his responsibilities and graduated in 1966, after which he headed to Hartford Hospital to begin his residency. Dr. Brown and his wife, Jacqueline Brown, RN ’64, who graduated from Albany Med’s School of Nursing, settled in the Syracuse, NY, area where he practiced as a general surgeon and taught residents and medical students as a professor of surgery at Upstate University Medical School.

To celebrate his 50th reunion, the Browns gave back with a gift of cash combined with naming the Medical College in their will. The Browns designated their gift to support the Class of 1966 Scholarship Endowment. “We want to inspire my classmates to join us in giving back to the College. So much of our success came to us because of our medical school experience.”

“Being a great physician requires dedication and empathy. I want medical students to know the importance of their emotional quotient and empathy in their careers. What better way to do this than to “walk the walk,” with our gift to them,” he says.

Now retired from surgery, Dr. Brown continues to serve as the senior surgical quality director at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. He says his career has given him immense satisfaction and enrichment.

“I still get up each morning looking forward to going to the office to be involved with my colleagues and in quality patient care. I like to think this is because Albany Medical College believed in me and gave me my “roots.” Why would one not desire to give something back?”

ment Award for Medical Service by the Overlook Foundation in Summit, New Jersey. On staff at Overlook Medical Center for more than 30 years, Dr. Groff has helped the hospital develop a reputation as a leader in conquering colorectal diseases through minimally invasive surgery, advanced treatment protocols, and a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. He recruited and financed a fellowship for Overlook’s first colon and rectal laparoscopic surgeon, and was instrumental in creating the hospital’s GI motility lab.

DanielM.Siegel,M.D.’81Dr. Siegel was awarded an honorary membership to the American Academy of Dermatology at the Academy’s 74th Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. in early March. He was recognized for his lifetime of dedicated service to dermatology and distinguished support of the Academy and its mission, especially during his tenure as president of the Academy from 2010-2011.

Dr. Siegel is a clinical professor of dermatology and director of residency surgical training at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY.

StaciePerlman,M.D.’01Dr. Perlman joined the medical staff at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, MA. She is the hospital’s first female surgeon to perform breast cancer operations. In addition to performing general and breast surgeries, Dr. Perlman is also trained in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery.

Richard H. Edmonds, Ph.D., (Hon.) ’91During his distinguished 35-year career at Albany Med, Dr. Edmonds served as a faculty member in the Department of Anatomy, as assistant to the dean and director of the joint programs with both Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and finally as assistant dean. Through the Alumni Association, the Richard H. Edmonds, Ph.D. Alumni Award is given annually to a medical and graduate student in recognition of outstanding student leadership.

Dr. Edmonds passed away on May 21, 2016.

Robert L. Friedlander, M.D., (Hon.) ’86Dr. Friedlander was named an assistant dean at the Albany Medical College in 1974, and served as dean and president of the College from 1980 to 1989. He contributed to the growth of and held several roles in the nascent Albany Medical Center, and later served on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He previously served Albany Medical College as instructor and chief resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology. His obstetrical-gynecological practice and professorship specialized in managing difficult pregnancies and fertility enhancement, where he was instrumental in helping couples have children. He was exceptionally proud of this work, and of his work with medical students and young physicians.

Dr. Friedlander passed away on May 22, 2016.

Richard A. Selzer, M.D. ’53The June 16, 2016 issue of The New York Times, marked the passing of alumnus Dr. Richard Selzer, Class of 1953 in an article highlighting his prolific writing career. Dr. Selzer gave up medicine and began writing full time at age 58. He was described in the article as a “surgeon who turned his operating-room experiences into fictional stories that blended the gore, the beauty and the absurdity of modern medicine.” He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1984.

Dr. Selzer passed away on June 15, 2016.

S. Shamim Haqqie, M.D.Dr. S. Shamim Haqqie, an esteemed member of the Albany Med community passed away suddenly on Friday, March 11, 2016. Professor Haqqie joined Albany Medical College in 1979, beginning as a fellow in Clinical Nephrology and serving as professor of medicine and director of educational programs in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, and was unwavering in his commitment to medical education. During his time, he mentored countless residents into excellent physicians and was a recipient of four outstanding teacher/attending of the year awards by the medical house staff of the College. He cherished his students and was adored by them.

As a colleague, he was a highly sought after consultant, whose inpatient service was always overflowing with requests for his assistance. He also served for 23 years in the US Army Reserves with numerous overseas deployments including tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He retired as a Colonel and won numerous awards for his dedicated service to our country.

Dr. Haqqie will be warmly remembered by the Albany Med community as a kind and caring man, a trusted colleague and clinician, and a devoted teacher.

In Memoriam

He was the fifteenth Dean of Albany Medical College, and a beloved and respected physician and mentor. He served in a number of leadership roles at Albany Medical College and Albany Medical Center including: Chief of Hematology, Executive Director of the Albany Medical Center Hospital and Senior Vice President for Patient Care of the Albany Medical Center. Dr. Tartaglia was inducted as an Honorary Member of the Albany Medical College Alumni Association in 1991.

In a message to the Albany Med community this past spring, Dean Verdile wrote, “I had the distinct honor of having had Dr. Tartaglia as a teacher/mentor when I was a student at the College and later as my dean when I returned to Albany Med in 1993. I admired him for his passion for medical education, his commitment to clinical excellence for the patients under his care and his command of the medical literature and its application to the practice of medicine.”

A Celebration for Dr. Anthony Tartaglia

I am one of many who have had the good fortune to have known Tony Tartaglia. My relationship has been a very special one since I met him as a second year

student at Albany Medical College. I had the good fortune to be in the first class of the combined BS/M.D. program with RPI and Albany Medical College. I was barely 21 years old, in my second year at Albany Medical College, and was introduced to the field of Hematology by this extraordinary man. He embodied all of the qualities of a physician, which had the most profound impact on me in in my formative years. I was compelled to follow his lead, and have been able to devote my career to carry on the practice of clinical Hematology.

I have maintained my friendship with him for the last 48 years. I always would visit with him and Jean on the occasion of my five-year class reunions. We did not miss even one over the last 45 years. The practice of Medicine was good to me, and I have been forever grateful for the guidance he provided me and the path I have taken. I was moved to establish the Anthony P. Tartaglia, M.D. Scholarship Fund in 2000 in his honor as an expression of my gratitude. Last year at my 45th class reunion, with the generosity of some of my classmates, we grew the fund to more than $1,000,000. Tony was present at the dinner, and it was wonderful to see him so touched by the event, and to feel the love and respect of the generation he helped to educate and guide into their careers. I am very proud that he was so touched, because it was he who touched us. There is no greater gift that can be bestowed upon an individual, than the expression of gratitude for being who you are. It is much better to let people know how you feel about them when they are alive, and can let their heart and soul be uplifted.

Although his passing saddens us all, we must rejoice that he was able to feel appreciated, admired and respected while he was with us. He had a fine life, a great career, and great family. The world is a better place because he was here. I will miss him, but his spirit and devotion to the Art of Medicine has been carried on with those of us he trained, and he will live in all of our hearts.
