EDITORIAL by Tony Olmer
A NEW SECOIN
During the World Zaf in France
September 2014, the Assembly of
National Captains adopted a
resolution that imposed a 2 year
apprenticeship for the newly
elected SECOIN. This was done to
allow for a smooth transition and
to insure that the new SECOIN
would remain a humble Secretary
working for the National Captains
as well as to apprise him of
ongoing matters.
On September 1st 2016 Mario
Cerpa Muñoz who had been
elected by the Assembly in France
as SECOIN SUPPLEANT,
officially took over as the new
SECOIN. At his request I will stay
on as English editor.
I would like to wish our new
SECOIN Mario Cerpa Muñoz all
the best, and pledge to him my
total support. It has been an honor
to have served the Assembly for
the past 6 years. Thank you for
your trust.

Durante el Zafarrancho Mundial
en Francia Septiembre 2014, la
Asamblea de Capitanes Nacionales
adoptó una resolución que impone
un aprendizaje de 2 años para el
recién elegido SECOIN. Esto fue
hecho para permitir una suave
transición y
para asegurar que el nuevo
SECOIN seguiría siendo una
humilde Secretaría trabajando para
los Capitanes Nacionales.
Durante el mundial se Zaf en
Francia septiembre de 2014, la
Asamblea de Capitanes Nacionales
adoptó una resolución que impone
un aprendizaje de 2 años para el
recién elegido SECOIN. Esto fue
hecha para permitir una suave
transición y para asegurar que el
nuevo SECOIN seguiría siendo
una humilde Secretaria trabajando
para los capitanes nacionales
también han aprendido a de
asuntos actuales.
El 1 de Septiembre de 2016 Mario
Cerpa Muñoz, que había sido
elegido por la Asamblea en
Francia como SECOIN alternativo,
asumió oficialmente como el
nuevo SECOIN. A petición suya
me quedaré como editor inglés.
Deseo a nuestro nuevo SECOIN
Mario Cerpa Muñoz todo lo mejor,
prometo darle mi total apoyo. Ha
sido un honor haber servido a la
Asamblea durante los últimos 6
años. Gracias por su confianza.

UN NOUVEAU
SECOIN
En septembre 2014, lors du dernier
Zaf mondial tenu en France,
l'Assemblée des Capitaines
nationaux a adopté une resolution
qui imposait une période
d'apprentissage de 2 ans au Secoin
nouvellement élu. Cette mesure a
été prise de manière à assurer une
transition en douceur et pour
garantir que le nouveau Secoin
saura demeurer l'humble assistant
travaillant au service des
Capitaines nationaux. Cela a aussi
été une manière pour lui de se
familiariser avec les dossiers.
Le 1er septembre 2016, Mario
Cerpa Muñoz, élu par l'Assemblée
en France comme Secoin
suppléant, a donc officiellement
pris ses fonctions de nouveau
Secoin. A sa demande, je resterai
dans l'équipe comme éditeur de
langue anglaise.
J'aimerais aujourd'hui présenter à
Mario Cerpa Muñoz mes meilleurs
voeux et l'assurer aussi de mon
total appui. Cela a été un honneur
pour moi de servir l'Assemblée des
Capitaines au cours des 6 dernières
années. Merci à tous de votre
confiance.

Durante la Zaf mondiale in Francia
a settembre 2014, l'Assemblea dei
Capitani Nazionali ha adottato una
risoluzione che impone un
apprendistato di due anni peri il
SECOIN neoeletto. Ciò è stato
fatto per consentire una transizione
graduale e per assicurare che il
nuovo SECOIN rimanesse un
umile segreteria che lavora per il
Capitani Nazionali anche per
avvisare lui delle questioni in
corso.
Il 1 Settembre 2016 Mario Cerpa
Muñoz, che era stato eletto
dall'Assemblea in Francia come
SECOIN SUPPLENTE, è assunto
ufficialmente a nuovo SECOIN.
Su sua richiesta rimarrò come
editore inglese.
Vorrei augurare al nostro nuovo
SECOIN Mario Cerpa Muñoz tutto
il meglio, e m’'impegno a dargli il
mio totale sostegno. E 'stato un
onore aver servito l'Assemblea per
gli ultimi 6 anni. Grazie per la
vostra fiducia.

Blanco, gracias por tu invitación a
publicar un viejo artículo mío
sobre la Hermandad de la Costa.
Lo dejo a tu arbitrio. Quiero
participarte que, debido a mi
avanzada edad, me he retirado de
mi función directiva de la
Hermandad Venezolana y he
dejado de ejercer la función de
Vigía Internacional. Ahora, todas
las funciones están concentradas
en el Hermano Mayor Alejandro
Paquin Letcher quien, al estar
residenciado y vivir en
Venezuela, asume la
responsabilidad de recibir y
contestar toda correspondencia.

¿QUÉ ES LA HERMANDAD
DE LA COSTA?
En el curso de los años,
repetidamente han sido formuladas
preguntas respecto a la naturaleza
de la Hermandad de La Costa
(HDC), tanto por personas ajenas a
esta, como por los mismos
Hermanos que la integran. El
"leitmotif" de esas preguntas gira
alrededor de lo qué es en realidad
esta Asociación que se denomina
"Hermandad" y cuáles son los
fines que persigue. Dichas
interrogantes ocurren
principalmente, porque en el
fondo, la gente desea ver en todo
tipo de Organización un fin
específico, tangible, casi siempre
cuantificable, sin el cual creen que
no hay justificación para su
existencia.
Sin embargo, para hablar de la
Hermandad de la Costa hace falta
desprenderse un poco del
pragmatismo materialista y estar
dispuestos a vagar algo en el
campo de la especulación, o por lo
menos de la espiritualidad de un
concepto.
A la pregunta ¿Qué es la
Hermandad de la Costa? contestaré
sencillamente que no es sino "una
Asociación de individuos que
tienen algo en común." Hasta aquí
no hay mucho de original, de
especialmente característico; en
efecto, en el mundo abundan las
agrupaciones comunitarias
integradas por gente que tiene
algún interés que compartir. En
nuestro caso sin embargo, ese algo,
es el amor al mar, a la vida y
tradición marinera, a la navegación
y al disfrute del entorno marino.
Ese amor, nos induce a no olvidar
el pasado, a establecer nuevas
relaciones personales, nos
mantiene unidos y nos proporciona
una profunda satisfacción al
reunirnos, hablar de nuestras
experiencias, compartir momentos
de cordialidad y sentirnos
desprendidos de las ataduras
circunstanciales que la sociedad
sofisticada impone. Aquí no hay
intereses económicos, ni
referencias materialistas, ni dobles
fines que impliquen y escondan
provecho personal.
Pero, ¿porqué tal Asociación toma
el nombre de Hermandad?
Antes que nada, hay que aclarar
una vez más que la denominación
"Hermandad" no implica en
nuestro caso, ninguna
conceptualización secreta,
subterránea, oculta. La HDC es
una Asociación abierta,
transparente y naturalmente no
política ni religiosa. Ese nombre,
adoptado por los fundadores en
Chile, en 1951, se impuso para
evidenciar el lazo abierto, sincero
y cordial que une a sus integrantes,
quienes se sienten hermanados en
su atracción y su amor por la mar.
Y la jocosa referencia a la piratería
del pasado es una relación
romántica que dista mucho de ser
considerada una reencarnación de
la idiosincrasia de aquellos
navegantes cuya existencia estuvo
ligada a asaltos, asesinatos, robos y
destrucción. Profundizar más sobre
este punto parece irrelevante, pero
es aquí donde el concepto se
transforma y se convierte en la
idealización o sinónimo de gente
del mar, de hazañas de navegantes,
del reto que impone surcar las olas
con la tradición y el estilo de todos
los navegantes que anduvieron por
los océanos en el pasado.
Con el nombre de Hermanos, se
quiso dar a esa integración de
individuos un sentir más profundo
del de simples "asociados", una
relación de amistad más intima y
sincera. Y como toda actividad
humana requiere de unas reglas
iniciales, se creó el Octálogo, una
sencilla enumeración de normas de
inter relación social en la que flota
un cierto connubio entre
espiritualidad y pragmatismo y que
no quiere ser un canon dictatorial
de comportamiento. El Octálogo es
más bien una expresión de
sentimientos, un desideratum
nostálgico, una manifestación
espiritual. Quien lo vea como un
condensado de normas legales,
como un nuevo Código de
Hamurabi, como una fuente
amenazante levantado sobre las
cabezas de los asociados, no ha
entendido el verdadero sentido de
la Hermandad de la Costa. A
primera vista, su texto puede
parecer excesivamente ingenuo,
hasta infantil por la simplicidad de
la forma en que sus conceptos
están expresados, pero al leerlo
con más atención, nos damos
cuenta del sentido profundo de
amistad y comprensión humana
que contiene. Y eso es
exactamente lo que compendia la
Hermandad de la Costa, esa
espiritualidad hermosa que flota y
se hace presente cada vez que un
integrante de una Mesa encuentra a
otro de un Litoral distinto a quien
no conoce, y le tiende la mano y lo
llama Hermano. Y de ese
encuentro casual surge una
relación nueva, un contacto
humano que difícilmente hubiese
existido sin pertenecer ambos a
esta cofradía.
Esta es, según nuestra
interpretación, la contestación a la
primera interrogante sobre lo que
es la Hermandad de la Costa.
La segunda preocupación de
muchos gira entorno a: ¿qué hace
la Hermandad de la Costa? ¿qué

resultado comunitario loable y
positivo tienen sus actividades?
Porqué, si no vigila las costas, no
apaga incendios, no rescata a
náufragos, no salva bancos de
corales, no auxilia barcos
encallados, no instala boyas, no
estudia ni avisa condiciones
meteorológicas, no salva ballenas
y delfines etc. etc……. ¡no tiene
razón de existir!
Pues diremos que a nuestro
entender, una Asociación como la
HHCC sí tiene razón de existir,
aun cuando esas actividades no
puedan considerarse fines
específicos para los cuales fue
creada. La HHCC no se constituyó
para ser un cuerpo de bomberos,
de ecólogos, de guardias costeros,
de buzos y meteorólogos, aun
cuando todas esas iniciativas
interesan y preocupan a sus
integrantes. Ni se constituyó para
proporcionar o conseguir
financiamiento para esas
actividades. Individualmente, cada
hermano o grupo de ellos, puede
tomar acción en ese sentido, pero
no en razón de que esa acción
representa el cumplimiento de un
mandato, de un fin especifico por
el cual la Hermandad fue creada.
El resultado positivo de una
Organización como la HDC hay
que buscarlo en el acercamiento
humano que brinda tanto
internamente, entre sus integrantes
como en sus contactos hacia
afuera, con aquellas personas e
instituciones con quienes se
relaciona. Porque no solo sus
miembros se benefician de esa
reverencia hacia la tradición
marinera que la HDC consagra y
pregona, también los demás que
frecuentan y aman el mar la captan
y la disfrutan. La mentalidad
contemporánea, ofuscada por su
afán de tecnicismo e innovaciones
tiende a olvidar las cosas del
pasado, y hay que ver cuán grande
es el patrimonio que las
generaciones anteriores nos
dejaron en relación con todo lo que
atañe a la mar y a la navegación.
La historia del hombre es la
historia de surcar los mares,
medirse con las fuerzas que allí
imperan, superarse a si mismo y
encontrar el rumbo de sus ideales.
Propiciar amistad, camaradería,
fraternidad entre individuos que
comparten el amor para la mar, es
una labor bella, noble y
profundamente comunitaria, aparte
de que, según dicen, de la mar
venimos y tal vez allí, algún día
regresaremos.

Costa in Poland.
By the way, as a one and only
Brotherhood on the "wrong side"
of Iron Curtain - for many years to
come, in the land of 'real
socialism', we and international
idea coming from the "capitalists"
side, were not popular and
welcomed at all. Your support
helped us to keep the idea alive
until happier times. We are
gratefull and somehow indebted
forever for our birth, exactly in

The bird on our flag is a Kiwi.
This is the national bird of New
Zealand, and internationally, we
are known as "Kiwis" in the same
way Americans are known as
"Yanks". It was decided that this
symbol would make it very easy to
identify our national table.

Nota : Este Editor ha recibido de
parte de Alvah Simon, VI de la
mesa de Nueva Zelanda, la
bandera negra de esa Hermandad
(la mostramos arriba) para ser
agregada a las tantas existentes en
la sala pirata de la Hermandad de
la Costa de Chile y del mundo,
habilitada en el Museo Histórico
Nacional en Valparaíso. La mesa
de Whangarai, única en N Zelanda
es muy activa, usan trajes de
combate muy llamativos y son muy
amistosos y fraternos, añoran
recibir hermanos y atenderlos
como se merecen, llevan el
Octálogo en la sangre y así lo
manifiestan según reza el art.

ellos profesan siempre..

Nao Montevideo El Capitán de la Nao de
Montevideo, Carlos “CARLITOS”
Valdés, comunica con orgullo que
el Hermano Félix Sienra
Castellano Rol 15 cumplió su
aniversario Nr. 100 de vida y se
une a los reconocimientos que le
brindaron varias Instituciones.
Nuestro Hermano Félix fue un
gran deportista y velerista,
miembro y dirigente del Yacht
Club Uruguayo y de profesión
Abogado especializado en Derecho
Postal.
A su vez fue dirigente en varias
Instituciones tales como:
Panathlon, Confederación
Uruguaya de Deportes, la
Federación Uruguaya de Vela,
Vicepresidente del Comité
Olímpico Uruguayo y
Comodoratos en el Yacht Club
Uruguayo.
Su mayor hazaña como velerista
fue el obtener el 6° lugar en los
Juegos Olímpicos de Londres en
1948 en la categoría Fairfly, puesto
que hasta el día de hoy no ha sido
superado.
Fue el autor de varios libros como
“Bajo la Cruz del Sur”, “100 años
del Yacht Club Uruguayo”.
El Yacht Club y el Comité
Olímpico Uruguayo homenajearon
a nuestro hermano, este último en
nombre de su Presidente Julio
César Maglione le otorgó un
diploma y el Pin de Oro, galardón
reservado a los grandes dirigentes. (“Mangueira”)
CAMBIO DE MANDO EN LA
HERMANDAD DE LA COSTA
URUGUAYA
Durante los días 9 , 10 y 11 de
Septiembre se llevaron a efecto los
actos del cambio de mando de la
Hermandad de la Costa del
Uruguay, El Capitán Nacional
Pedro “Loro” Merlino hizo entrega
de la espada del Mando que
mantuvo por dos años, al joven
hermano Gonzalo “ Mangueira”
Trías, quien después de una muy
activa participación en las
actividades de esa Hermandad,
recibe el cargo de Capitán
Nacional siguiendo la trayectoria
de ilustres Hermanos de esa
Cofradía, tales como Bebeto
Bidegaray y Jambo Dupont.
Dieron realce a los actos
celebrados, la concurrencia de 50
representantes de diversas naos
chilenas encabezadas por el
Lugarteniente Nacional Renato
“Abracadabra” De Lucca y
compuesta por varios capitanes de
naos, Hermanos Mayores e
importantes miembros de la
Cofradía Chilena, asimismo
participó el Capitán Nacional
Hermano Néstor “Cachafaz”,
Dusetti, acompañado de un
pequeño grupo de hermanos
argentinos.
Los actos se desarrollaron en
Montevideo en medio de grandes
muestras de amistad y fraternidad
de los participantes, muchos de
ellos, ya conocidos por todos
debido al hecho de haberse
conocido en zafarranchos
internacionales en Francia, en
Panamá y Cuba recientemente y
por haber concurrido a
zafarranchos en Chile.
Una grata participación les cupo a
las cautivas de los Hermanos
presentes quienes con su alegría y
su buena disposición pusieron un
marco íntimo y familiar a los
eventos.
Tanto a la Fiesta de los Abrazos
del primer día, como a la Visita al
Museo Naval concluida con una
paella en instalaciones costeras y
el zafarrancho de entrega del
mando en Parva Domus,
concurrieron cerca de un centenar
de hermanos y cautivas que, con
sus vistosas tenidas pusieron la
nota piratesca al emocionante acto
de la entrega de la Capitanía
Nacional.

En el último Zafarrancho mensual
de nuestra Nao, del viernes pasado
tomamos la foto grupal de algunos
Hermanos que asistieron, en
nuestra guarida en el Club Náutico
Victoria.
También envío copia del Rol
completo con Hermanos
Bichicumas y Muchachos, faltan
algunas fotos las que estamos en
proceso de armado.
Espero todo sea de utilidad.

Nao Valparaíso obtiene
Propiedad en comodato
El 12 de Julio de 2015 fue un día muy
importante para la Nao/Mesa de
Valparaíso y para la BOC de Chile. La
Ilustre Municipalidad de Valparaíso a

través del Concejo Municipal y de su
Alcalde don Jorge Castro entregó a la
Nao de Valparaíso, por 20 años
renovables, una propiedad con vista a
nuestro mar y ubicada en el sector de
Playa Ancha de este hermoso puerto.
Pasadas las 12 hrs de ese dia Martes y
en el Salón Consistorial de la
Municipalidad, ante más de 60
personas, Hermanos, cautivas,
bichicumas, muchachos y autoridades,
se procedió a las firmas del Alcalde y
del Capitán de la Nao Hermano Héctor
“Nautilus” Andrade en el Acta-
Acuerdo respectiva.
En esta imagen aparecen el Cap Nac de la HC de Chile Hermano Luis “Mac Giver” Pellegrini,
el Cap de Nao “Nautilus”, el alcalde don Jorge
Castro, su señora y el Lugarteniente Nacional Hermano Renato “Abracadabra” De Lucca,
todos en posición de abordaje, dando lectura a la
Oración al Mar de nuestro Hermano en el ME Salvador Reyes.
Posterior a este encuentro continuamos
viaje al Club Alemán (Deutscher
Verein) a degustar un rico cóctel y un
exquisito bucan para seguir celebrando
este gran acontecimiento.
Esta gran casona se encuentra
actualmente bastante deteriorada,

producto de un gran incendio y se
estima en muchos millones de
$Doblones el repararla, lo que significa
un gran desafío para la nao y que
tomará unos años, pero con el empuje
y esfuerzo de sus tripulantes no nos
cabe duda saldrán adelante.
La Pincoya nuevamente se pone de
pié.. Así es, gracias al inicio de las
obras por parte de la Cámara de Proa,
es decir de bichicumas y muchachos y
el empuje del Condestable estamos
viendo la guarida que se levanta poco a
poco, obviamente con algunos
cambios a lo que fue la guarida
original, pero hermosa como siempre..
Arriba vemos la fachada de la nueva
guarida La Pincoya, aún sin terminar,
pero un grupo de Hermanos que
pudieron asistir festejaron el viernes 16
junto con los maestros los tan

esperados tijerales y recién, el sábado
24 al mediodía la nao celebró su
primer zafarrancho con cautivas e
invitados. A este zafarrancho se le ha
llamado “Reflotamiento 2016 Guarida
La Pincoya”. Se diseñó una “chapita”
como recuerdo, su autor ha sido el
Hermano Rodrigo Concha quien ha
adoptado el nombre de combate de
“PICASSO” y por algo será, no les
parece?
A este zafarrancho asistieron mas de
25 Hermanos, sus cautivas e invitados
y se aprovechó además de celebrar un
Aniversario mas de la Independencia
de nuestra Patria, donde se bailó
principalmemte nuestro baile nacional,
la cueca.

IRELAND
The Four Tables in Ireland - North,
South, East and West, - have seen
the Freres very active around the
island and abroad.
It starters in May with a visit by
the Northern Table to Inis Mor, the
largest of the Aran Islands off
Connemara. The party was based
in Renvyle Hpuse Hotel ( owned
by the VI). The high cliffs of the
island face the Atlantic and are
ringed by pre-historic fortresses,
such as Dun Aengusa, plunging
into the Wild Atlantic Way. In
early Christianity, when Europe
was in ruins, the island was a
center of learning, and many early
churches and monasteries remain.
Well done Northern Table !
In August, Frere John Killeen with
Freres Brian Lynch and Gerry
McGarry sailed in his yacht
Nimmo from Valetta to Sicily and
around the Aeolian Islands, and
back to Malta. Also in August
Thenwriter took command of his
motor yacht, a Benetaeau 42 Swift,
in Marina di Ragusa and sailed her
to Malta where she is registered
and named "ZoRoSo" after his 3
daughters. She will be based there
for the present. John K and I think
that our presence there call for a
revival of the Maltese-Table.
Meanwhile, our GF Adrian
O'Connell, welcomed the
Norwegian Sail Training Ship, "
Staatsraad Lehmkukhl " captained
by Our Brother Marcus Seidl, in
Dublin. Adrian presented him with
a plaque of the Irish Table.
Another Frere, Enda O'Coineen,
who sailed single-handed from the
Caribbean to Brittany in the
Spring, is going to sail the Vendee
World in November 8 and Freres
are encouraged to be at the Start to
support our Frere - more later. His
yacht is the "Kilcullen Voyager "
and she's the finest. Enda is
centrally involved in the Atlantic
YouthTrust.

and Atlantic Youth Trust Board
members.
The Atlantic Youth Trust will
establish a training ship aimed at
educating the youth of Ireland,
North and South. The project has
the full support of the

L'Ospite che non ti aspetti, in un
momento in cui tutti quelli che
sono rimasti in città a fine luglio si
affrettano a raggiungere le località
di vacanza per sfuggire al caldo
estivo e rinfrescarsi al mare o sul
mare.
Il 21 luglio, una telefonata ed un
messaggio del Fra. Roberto
Soldatini della Tavola Etrusca, che
stava programmando per agosto un
periplo della Sardegna con la sua
barca “Denecia II“, chiede la
possibilità di un contatto con i
Fratelli della Tavola e con la
Sezione della L.N.I. di Cagliari e

di un supporto logistico e di
uditori per la presentazione del suo
libro “Sinfonie Mediterranee”,
che illustrerà e integrerà con
alcuni brani eseguiti con il suo
violoncello del '700, come
cartoline musicali degli approdi
descritti nel libro.
Il Lgt.Salvolini, che ha ricevuto la
comunicazione, coinvolge lo staff
direttivo ed attiva i contatti con la
Presidenza della Sez.L.N.I. di
Cagliari ottenendo la disponibilità
di una sala per la presentazione
dell'evento. Resta da determinarne
la data, tenendo conto delle
incognite legate alla rotta di
avvicinamento a Cagliari del
Fra.Soldatini, delle condizioni
meteo non stabili e della
disponibilità di uditori tra Fratelli
della Tavola e “aficionados”.
La sinergia dei Fratelli ancora
presenti in sede, l'interessamento
propositivo del nostro Gran
Comm. Fabio Scarpellini, la rete di
messaggi inviati per spronare la
partecipazione di chi aveva già
assaporato la vacanza estiva, ha
determinato la data dell'evento all'
11 agosto, confermata poi con
l'arrivo puntuale del Fra. Soldatini,
accolto con simpatia dai Fratelli
all'ormeggio nelle banchine del
Marina L.N.I. di “Su Siccu”.
Alle 18.00 la presentazione del
Fra. Roberto Soldatini nella Sala
alla presenza di un uditorio
compatto ed interessato sia al
contenuto del libro che alle sue
avventure nautiche. Il Gr.Comm.
Scarpellini, dopo la presentazione ,
si propone come intervistatore e
moderatore degli interventi dei
presenti, lasciando poi che
Soldatini, simpatico affabulatore,
presentasse la sua opera e desse
corpo alla sua tesi sul rapporto tra
la musica ed il mare e su come la
navigazione a vela abbia
influenzato il suo modo di
interpretare la lettura dello spartito
musicale.
E poiché Roberto Soldatini è
compositore, direttore d'orchestra e
violoncellista, ha dato vivacità alla
presentazione eseguendo diversi
brani musicali con il suo
Violoncello Stradivari ,
illustrandone le particolarità di
esecuzione in riferimento al
concetto che il ritmo della natura
favorisce l'approfondimento della
lettura dell'invenzione musicale dei
grandi autori.
Roberto Soldatini, che da cinque
anni alterna sei mesi in porto nella
città di Napoli, che lo ha adottato,
e sei mesi di navigazione solitaria
con la sua barca-casa “Denecia
II”, ha raccontato nel suo libro
“Sinfonie Mediterranee” di un
viaggio di oltre
tremilacinquecento miglia, con
una rotta tracciata seguendo il
vento, facendo quasi cento tappe
in approdi nuovi e nostalgici
ritorni, con la consapevolezza che
a dettare il percorso, nel suo caso,
è sempre stato il ritmo della natura
e a volte la mano del destino.
A questo punto molti dei presenti
hanno proposto domande ed
interrogativi all'autore , che ha
raccontato altri anedotti sulla sua
navigazione, corrispondendo alle
aspettative dei presenti e
deliziandoli con la sua bravura
musicale.
Alle ore 20.00 il moderatore ha
ringraziato il Fratello Roberto
Soldatini della sua disponibilità e
simpatia ed i partecipanti
all'evento per gli interventi
proposti, ed ha concluso invitando
tutti i presenti ad un happening
ristoratore, predisposto nel salone
attiguo a cura di un collaudato
catering specializzato in piatti
freddi della cucina cagliaritana.
L'apprezzamento dei piatti e la
cordiale atmosfera creatasi con lo
scambio di opinioni e discussioni,
cui ha partecipato attivamente
l'ospite, hanno dato gradevolezza
alla serata che si è conclusa con
brindisi e con il rituale “Golpe de
Cannon” della Tavola di Cagliari.

to host the past Polish National
Captain, Jerzy Paleolog and
Captive Anna, on a tour of US
Tables followed by a two week
self-guided scenic driving tour of
the western USA. They landed in
New York, traveled to Tables in
Solomons Island, Chesapeake,
Savannah, San Antonio, Houston
and Corpus Christie. Huge
ORZAs!!! to all who graciously
hosted them, including Andre and
Irena Bienkowski for touring
NYC, Al and Cynde Redfield for a
tour of the Solomons and
Washington DC, Scott and
Michele Ripley for a raft-up on
ORZA, Joa and Jessica Kelly and

John Byrne and Captive Helen for
a Savannah tour, then on to Charlie
Hankins and Marsha for a great
swing through Texas with Ken
Hutchinson in Houston and Paul
and Karen Froeshner in Corpus
Christi.
New York Table Brothers came
out of the woodwork on June 24 to
welcome Sherry and Preston
Carraway on the first leg of their
Great Loop Voyage. We learned
that the Carraways would be at a
marina in Croton-on-Hudson after
their first stop on Staten Island.
The welcoming committee met on
the deck of “Sojurner”, a
44’Endeavor Trawlercat and then
repaired to a hibachi restaurant for
more wine and flying shrimp.
On August 9 we had the second
annual Clam Zaf at Greenwich
Point Park hosted by JoeC and
JoeH and their very efficient
captives, Gail and Maureen.
Brother Jerzy Paleolog and
Captive Anna from Poland were
our guests of honor. And we were
happy to welcome our Paul and
Dawn Gudelis who have sailed
their Malo 36 “Bubu”to St.
Augustine (where they now live),
the Bahamas, Cuba and back to
Stamford and cruising our northern
waters. We set up camp under the
trees - on a beautiful Long Island
Sound beach; a swim was about
100 feet away for Marie, Jay and
Jane while the others watched. The
Joes, once again, had purchased
over 200 clams from a local
supplier. The jury is still out as to
whether one prefers the fresh
shucked raw clams or the ones that
got roasted on the grill. And we
enjoyed the Brotherhood spirit and
the usual generous bounty of our
typical potluck repast for six plus
hours on a perfect day. Oh, and
wine too.

engraved individually assigned
number, the date, and the name /
nickname of the recipient. The
records of these data are kept by
the Secretary of the Polish

Solomons Island Table this
August had a wonderful visit from
the past National Captain of the
Poland BOC, Jerzy Paleolog and
his captive, Anna. Jerzy and Anna
were accompanied by Joe and Gail
Citarella from NY. Big thanks to
Al and Cynde Redfield for hosting
our guests in their home.
We had a wonderful dinner at the
Island Hideaway on the 10th.
Linda Bailey escorted them on a
tour of D.C. on the 11th, followed
by a great dinner at Kingfisher's.
The morning of the 12th our guests
enjoyed a morning swim at Spring
Cove Marina, followed by a visit
to the Calvert Marine Museum,
then off to the Chesapeake Table.
They were forewarned about the
banana rum and other potential
perils aboard the Orza.
Solomons Island Brother “Goose”
traveled to Ireland and, with initial
contact by Joe Citarella, was able
to meet up with the Irish Brothers
from the Eastern Table in Galway,
including the Eastern Table
Captain, Adrian O’Connell and the
Irish National Captain, Brian
Sheridan. These gracious brothers
threw a fabulous Boucan in honor
of the visit at Martine's Restaurant
and Wine Bar. With the help of
Charles Hankins and Tony Olmer,
Goose was able to present the Irish
National Captain, Brian Sheridan,
an official Letter of Marque from
the U.S.A. National Captain, Scott
Ripley.

Friday evening “play-in” party on
a local cruise boat. From the 80 or
so people who attended, we were
told that it was a fantastic way to
start the Zaf, so we are doing it
again on Friday, December 2nd
from 8-11 pm!
THE CRUISE
We reserved the entire vessel for
ZAF attendees. Enjoy cruising the
placid waters of the bay and dance
the night away listening to music
under a twinkling sky.
LeBarge has four beautiful live
palm trees, decorative mermaids
on the top deck and an aquarium
bar on the lower deck. This 60-foot
double-decker boat with indoor
and outdoor seating was made to
party. A full (cash) bar on each
deck will accommodate the thirst
of all brothers, captives, and

En 2016, la Table de Bruxelles
organisait le “Branle-Bas
Navigant ” annuel, avant la saison
estivale.
Le Grand Frère Tiendebout et son
Scribe Dom Barde nous trouvèrent
une crique bien abritée dans le port
de Dunkerque (France) grâce à
l’aide efficace de Frères de la
Table de Flandre Septentrion:
Shilling, Véachef et l’Amusette.
Les vaisseaux de la Flotte de
Belgique furent accueillis
chaleureusement par «Les
Corsaires». Leur Capitaine Jacques
Galliaerde préside cette incroyable
confrérie de Carnaval locale, avec
lesquels les Frères présents à ce
Branle-Bas Navigant fraternisèrent
rapidement.
Les Frères sont venus de partout
avec un bon vent, bien établi. Et
pourtant tout souriants à l’arrivée.
Chacune des 6 Tables de Belgique
était représentée: Gand, Bruxelles,
Zeebrugge, Antwerpen, Nieuwport
et Liège.
Après l’écluse, les manœuvres
d’amarrages se firent en un ballet
majestueusement orchestré, dans la
bonne humeur, sous le regard
ébahi des quelques passants
présents sur les quais.
Pensez donc: 47 navires, pour une
longueur totale de 495m… à
entasser le long d'un quai de 165m
et à relier à l'électricité.
Immédiatement, les Engagés de
Bruxelles furent mis à l’épreuve
pour préparer le drink du soir. Il
faut dire qu’ils s’en sont sortis
dignement.
Quelques discours et Orzas plus
tard, les Frères, Captives et
Equipiers se mirent joyeusement à
table: poulet garni et… frites de
Belgique pour 160 personnes, le
tout bien chaud pour contrer un
vent glacial pénétrant dans la tente,
sans enrayer la bonne ambiance.
Le lendemain, plusieurs visites
dans Dunkerque furent proposées
après la traditionnelle et
savoureuse course de sabots. Le
fameux "Sabot d’or" passa dans les
mains d’un autre Frère. Un jeu
réservé exclusivement aux
Captives leur a permis de mettre en
avant imagination et créativité, de
bien se marrer aussi, autant que les
spectateurs.
Le Grand-Frère National et son
Scribe offrirent l’apéritif à l’entrée
du bâtiment des Corsaires, avant
qu’un BBQ pantagruélique soit
servi à table aux 196 convives,
dans une salle comble, pour le
grand banquet du soir.
L’Ami Zen, Vigie internationale
de France, accompagné de Frères
et Engagé de la Table de Flandre
Septentrion, et quelques
représentants des «Corsaires» nous
firent l’honneur de participer à ce
repas. Poudre blanche et rouge
coulèrent à flot. Ponctuant de
nombreux Orsa les
discours. Chaque Table a participé
à la joute des Chorales, avec ses
chansons de marins dont les
refrains furent repris en chœur par
toute la salle. Ils résonnent encore
outre-Quiévrain.
Au troisième jour nous remplirent
à nouveau l’écluse. Chaque
Capitaine mit le cap vers son port
d’attache la tête pleine des bons
moments passés ensemble.
Un feu d’artifice pour la dernière
réunion organisée par Tiendebout
et Dom Barde. Merci à la Table de
Bruxelles.

50 years passed
Polish HERMANDAD DE LA
COSTA is 50 years old. It was
born in Chile, in 1966, during long
stay there by sail yacht ŚMIAŁY
(THE BRAVE) voyaging around
South America.
Celebration of that anniversary
took place, in and about Polish
harbour Gdynia, on international
Zafarrancho held between 2nd
and
5th
of September 2016. Our Zaf-50
meeting was also dedicated to the
memory of our Brother #1,
Bolesław Kazimierz Kowalski,
aged 87. Alas he died on 2nd
September 2015. He is our leader
and founder Brother who for
whole 49 years lead, advised and
monitored activities of “Mesa
Kaprów Polskich”. He served as
a National Captain for 19 years
during that period.
On Friday evening, in our main
base - hotel Dom Marynarza
(Seamen House), we welcomed
everybody including Brothers from
Great Britain and Germany.
Saturday 3rd
Sep all of us sailed on
traditional wooden fishing boats
called Pomeranki. to the
uninhabited island in the middle of
Puck Bay which is a part of the
sandy Seagulls Reef. Some years
ago it emerged above the sea level
and gained the name Sucha Rewa
(Dry Reef).
There awaited for Brothers - an
artificial palm tree, tables and
sitting banks, choice of drinks and
buffet serving an array of local
Kaszubian fish dishes. (Northern
part of Poland, close to the sea and
Puck Bay is called Kaszuby).
Men's shanty choir Zawisza
Czarny arrived by
small steamboat Xiążę Xavery
(Prince Xavery) and gave us an
excellent concert a
capella. Sunny w eather raised
spirits high and many Brothers
declared that such kind of Zaf has
never and nowhere happened
before.
However it was not a picnic only.
After ceremonial hoisting a large
flag of Polish Brotherhood we had
a minute of silence for
remembrance of Capt. Boleslaw
Kowalski and all Brothers,
including foreign ones, who left us
until present time.
Then there was a time for
awards and decorations. The first
was engineer Zygmunt Choreń
who received a highest award of
Polish Brotherhood – The Glory of
the Seas Trophy – a full size pirate
battle axe. He is a tall-ship
designer and constructor who
created a whole flotilla of vessels
sailing the world seas under many
flags.
There are eighteen of them and
include some best known and most
famous. Sail training ship
LE QUY DON was quite recently
delivered to Vietnamese Navy.
The second person honoured on
uninhabited island was engineer
Aleksander Celarek decorated
with Medal of Polish Brotherhood.
He is entrepreneur, sail maker,
known for his social, cultural and
sailing activities in whole
Kaszubian region.
In particular numerous now
Pomeranki, made and sailing since
XVIII century,
have been revived from extinction
thanks to his efforts. He built also
many replicas of other old vessels
and boats of the region - including
Xiążę Xavery...
High noon Sunday, at a
suitable for the occasion rainy
weather, there was an unveiling of
a plaque in memory of our Captain
B.K.Kowalski in the Alley of
Polish Sailing situate on the south
breakwater of Yachting Basin of
Gdynia harbour. He is the ninth of
famous Polish sailors

commemorated there. Beside
Brothers were in attendance
numerous friends, sailing
companions and Gdynia's civic
leaders.
Following that ceremony we made
a visit to recently open Museum of
Emigration in pre-war building of
Gdynia's Passenger Sea Terminal
.
On Sunday evening a traditional
brotherly banquet was the last
official meetings of Zaf-50.
Brothers in full strength signed an
open letter to the President and
City Council of Gdańsk with an
appeal for attention and help to -
known all over the world - Sailors
Tavern ZEJMAN. Year ago it was
compulsory moved from the old
site in the centre of Gdańsk to a
new site Brama Nizinna (Lowland
Gateway) in order to give space for
city developers. Now, a fresh steps
for repairs are made by contractors
in an arbitrary way. Alas they
constitute a grave danger for the
ability to continue activities of our
famous tavern and its International
Club of Sailors.
Many ORZA's, firing broadside
salutes, general fraternizing,
exchanging gifts and messages
followed. The one delivered by
Brother Malcolm Hill, in his
distinctly own Polish language,
was much appreciated by Poles.
The main event was a swearing in
of seven new Brothers to Mesa
Kaprów Polskich. The last given
numeral was 155 and this figure
determine number of Polish
Brothers since birth in Chile - up
to the 50-th year of our existence.

En conformidad con tu solicitud
Hermano Mario en días pasados,
adjunto a la presente el Rol de la
Hermandad venezolana. Como
verás, tenemos 17 Hermanos
activos, con una gran mayoría de
fallecidos y desembarcados por
diversas razones a lo largo del
tiempo. Algunos hermanos,
especialmente aquellos de la Mesa
de Puerto la Cruz, no se han
reportado y desconocemos bien su
situación, debido a los diferentes
acontecimientos políticos y
fenómenos naturales, que afectaron
la costa central de Venezuela en
1999 y en 2005, y que han
dificultado las comunicaciones.

dificultado muchísimo la
organización de zafarranchos con
la frecuencia que necesitamos y
deseamos, pero estamos haciendo
un gran esfuerzo para mantener la
Nao a flote y con buen rumbo. La
desaparición física y desembarcos
voluntarios por Hermanos que se
mudaron otras latitudes, ha sido
factor importante en el
desenvolvimiento de la
Hermandad en Venezuela.
Estamos en el lento, pero seguro
proceso de reclutar sangre nueva
para impartirle el dinamismo, que
tanta falta nos hace. La lista que te
enviamos, que estará sujeta a
actualización en los próximos
meses, esperamos que vaya
creciendo paulatinamente hasta
tener la tripulación para celebrar
muchos Zafarranchos. Recibirás de
nosotros comunicaciones con
mayor frecuencia de ahora en

ANGOLA
Our table is floating under both
local winds: physical, mainly from
SouthWest and economical, big
crisis mainly caused by low
international oil prices. Angola is
one of the biggest oil producers of
Africa and very much dependent
on it.
Angola did participate in RIO2016
in two sailing disciplines, LASER
and 470 as well as in rowing –
light double scull. Regrettably
Angola was one of the 178
participating countries that did not
get a medal. We will keep our
work. The road to the podium is
quite long and not easy.
Ultimately our table is very much
engaged in light sail activities as
members of our table have top
places both in one local Nautical
Club and in National Sailing and
Rowing Federation.
Internally we are now in the
(slow…JJ) process of searching
new members, younger, to
improve our activities related our
Brotherhood.
It was a good initiative to give us a
dead line to show that we are not
in coma.

Report from Australia
September 2016
Salutations from the brothers and
captivas of the Sydney Table to
our international frères of the
Brotherhood of the Coast.
Our table has continued to meet at
generally monthly intervals and
recent activities have included our
annual regatta held in January. A
special January event was a
pleasant Sunday voyage on the
new tonnage acquired by Brother
Warren and Tracy Myles.
Observations were made of
Harrison’s timepieces in their
international travelling exhibition
and continued investigations into
the historical maritime history of
Sydney Harbour are planned for
September. And we look forward
to the South Pacific Zafarrancho in
New Zealand in November 2016
with all brothers planning to
attend.
The annual regatta was held in
January at the country estate of our
Captain Michael Mekhitarian and
his captiva Suzi. The qualifications
for entry in the regatta are non-
electric nor internal combustion
propulsion, waterline length of
300mm (or thereabouts) and that is
about it. The usual range of types
of vessels was reduced this year –
no rubber-band boats this time and
no recycled PET bottle hulls from
St Vitus after 5 years of trying.

enclosing fences and houses.
However the winds were
favourable and Mr Smith’s timber
and polystyrene catamaran CYC 7
proved successful. Mr. Morris
brought last year’s winner Admiral
Drake along for a dip but declined
to enter him for 2016 and resorted
to polystyrene. Engage’ Kevin
tried a catamaran Viking vessel
which could provide potential for
the future.
Later in January, Brother Warren
and captiva Tracey Myles took
ownership of Nautical Myles, a 41’
catamaran from France, as their
new floating abode. For their
maiden long-distance voyage from
the Sunshine Coast to Sydney (and
later beyond), they were
accompanied by Mrs Gayle Smith

Reports of night-time sailing at 16
knots off Yamba provided exciting
times for the sailing trio. On
arrival in Sydney Harbour they
rested before welcoming the
members of the Sydney Table
aboard for a Sunday Session along
the Parramatta River and one of its
tributaries. Other catamaran
owners in the vicinity of the
lunchtime mooring were also
welcomed aboard and notes shared
about the benefits of a life at sea in
a cat. On arrival in Sydney
Harbour they rested before

In February Brother Le Passeur
(Peter Smith) invited the table to
an evening of dockside discussions
and travellers’ tales aboard Gayle
Smith’s Wayfarer as its refit nears
an end.
In April, in preparation for the
upcoming South Pacific
Zafarrancho (SPZ) hosted by our
kiwi brothers at Whangarei in New
Zealand in late November,
brothers Baba Blanca (Rod Gault)
St Vitus (Colin Tickell) and their
captivas Cathy & Joan, paid a
preliminary reconnoitre to the land
of the long white cloud. Several
voyages were taken during this
visit including journeys to White
Island volcano (where gas masks
are essential equipment), Lake
Taupo inspection of rock carvings
and a circuit of the Bay of Islands.
Our New Zealand brothers made
us very welcome and the SPZ is
promising to be an exciting time,
with French Polynesian, New
Zealand and Australian brothers in
attendance.
In June a visit was made to the
National Maritime Museum to
observe Harrison’s chronometers
#1 to #4.
New Zealand – Lake Taupo
voyage.
This was part of an international touring exhibition and includes journals written by Newton and the history of the competition to identify methods of navigation, described in the Dava Sobel novel Longitude.
In September we have a proposed
visit to Cockatoo Island in the
western end of Sydney Harbour (or
on the Parramatta River to be
precise). This small island was the
site for historical shipbuilding and
maritime engineering since the
very early days of settlement (pre-
1800) and until the late 20th
Century was still engaged in
shipbuilding and defence.
May the winds favour all our
brothers and we look forward to
meeting in Uruguay in 2018. Orza!

Christmas Zafarancho on 5th
December 2015. in Radpusta. As
the former Scribe National
resigned, the National Captain
nominated the new Scribe
National, who became "Vidám"
(Happy). At the Zaffarancho the
brothers and their corsasras
enjoyed the wines and foods very
much, as the place is one of the
best wine cellar in the territory of
West-Hungary. Everybody could
taste the products of many
vineyards accompanied by the best
grilled meats."

de los XV y Hermano Honorario
Hernán
« Arrecife »
Silva, rol Nr.
2164, quien
padecía de una
larga enfermedad.
Había nacido un 9
de Marzo de 1929.
Hondo pesar ha
causado el zarpe
de este Hermano
entre nuestros
cófrades por su
gran calidad
humana, su
extraordinario sentido de humor,
su gran sabiduría y experiencia en
la oratoria.
Sus restos fueron cremados y sus
cenizas lanzadas al mar frente a la
guarida La Pincoya de su Nao en
Recreo, Valparaíso.
Hermano Enrique Oyanedel
Tapia, nombre de combate (aka)
Tiburón Negro. Médico Cirujano
de profesión y Cirujano Barbero en
nuestra Nao, por entretención.
Nació en la vecina ciudad de
Quillota un 8 de Mayo de 1936 y
zarpó un 15 de Agosto de 2016.
Contaba con 80 bien vividos años
cuando decidió abandonar la vida
terrenal.
En el Centro Ceremonial del
Parque del Recuerdo, en Con Con,
su hija Alejandra hizo una hermosa
semblanza de él :
« Nuestro padre nació en Quillota
un 8 de Mayo de 1936, hace 80
años. Se fue a estudiar a Santiago,
pasó por el Instituto Barros Arana
y por la Universidad de Chile. Ya
médico viajó a USA a estudiar, se
trasladó como médico de barco de
la Cía. Sudamericana de Vapores
y esta aventura de viajar
embarcado, lo marcó para toda su
vida. Siempre fue un padre-
médico que estaba en turno, en
pabellón, en la consulta o
haciendo domicilios. el primer
año nuevo de mi vida, lo pasé aún
in utero, en el Hospital Sanatorio
Valparaíso, donde comenzó a
trabajar y se fue quedando por 44
años. En ese hospital aprendió a
ser médico y cirujano y a operar
tórax, especialidad en que fue
profesor y maestro de sus colegas.
También fue médico de la Cruz
Roja chilena y Taote (medico) en
el hospital Hanga Roa de la Isla
de Pascua.
El papá nos enseñó a usar las
manos, a ser artesanos , a hacer el
nudo de la corbata, a hacer bastas,
a pegar botones, a ser gasfíter y
carpintero, y en los ultimos años
aprendimos a amar el mar y la
vida de los piratas, y los piratas se
fueron infiltrando de a poco en
nuestras vidas y ahora estamos
llenos de frases como “ooooorza”,
“a cubrir calzos », etc …
UN ORZA POR LA AMISTAD
En uno de
los viajes
de
Sernatur, a
Puerto
hacabuco,
junto a mi
cautiva,
asistimos
al cóctel de
bienvenida
que nos hacía el Hotel Loberías.
Nos sentamos junto a ocho
personas, todas desconocidas.
Después de las palabras del
Encargado del Hotel y de
Sernatur, nos sirvieron el ansiado
cóctel. Al alzar la copa un Orza
salió espontáneamente de mi
garganta. Mi vecina en la mesa me
miró y no tardó en preguntarme si
era Hermano de la Costa, le dije
que era de Arica y no había
solicitado trasbordo todavía, ya
que no conocía a nadie de la
Hermandad en Valparaíso. La
vecina de mesa era Jimena, la
cautiva de Tiburón Negro.
Inmediatamente la amistad
empezó a fluir entre nosotros
cuatro y de a poco nos fueron
entusiasmando para que nos
integráramos a la Nao Valparaíso.
El Capitán Abracadabra me
incorporó de inmediato a la Nao,
ya con mis papeles de trasbordo en
orden.
Es por eso que desde ahora,
siempre que escuche un Orza,
recordaré la amistad que nos
brindaron Tiburón Negro y su
cautiva Jimena.
