Is there any interest in new club hats at $12 each? New members will receive a hat and a nametag at no cost.

Our club now qualifies for silver leadership status. To qualify for gold level status we need to conduct a charityevent, possibly a food drive. In addition, we will make a donation to the AMA scholarship fund.

April’s Program – A123 BatteriesThanks go to Yohay Hahamy, Sholmo Rimer, and Aviv Shoval(unfortunately he was out of town) for the veryinformative presentation they did on A123 batteries. Yohay discussed the advantages, disadvantages, and thedifferences of A123’s. He also went over how to charge them, the types of chargers to use, and fielded manyquestions from the group. Both he and Sholmo actually did a hands-on demonstration of how to build one. Forthose of us that have been looking for a safer alternative to Lipos, this gave us a new option. I am sure that if anyof you have more questions about these batteries they would be glad to answer them.

WANTED – PICNIC COMMITTEE CHAIRMANIf you want to have a picnic this year, we need someone to take over this position and put together a team to pullthis together. Many thanks go to Carl Will and his team in coordinating an excellent event in the past few years.

R/C Aviation HumorA very knowledgeable modeler with a know-it-all arrogant attitude challenged club members that he could answerany model-related questions. For a small $5 bet, he would go around and ask each member to ask one question.If he answered wrong, he would lose the bet. True to his words, he could answer all questions till finally nomodelers would take up the challenge.

Always on the lookout for a new victim, one day the arrogant modeler came across a new novice member. "Ichallenge you that we will take a turn to ask model related questions" said the modeler, "But because you are anovice, if I can't answer your question, I'll pay you $100. But if you can't answer my question, you'll pay me $5".

The novice just wanted to get on with his flying and refused the bet. However, after repetitive, annoying wordsfrom the arrogant modeler, the novice just wanted him off his back so he accepted the bet.

The novice asked his question first... "What plane has 5 wings, 3 tails and 1 aileron, fitted with only an OS 28 andcan go up to 250 km/h?"

After a long thought, the arrogant modeler concluded for the first time, he did not know the answer and paid thenovice $100. "

So what's the plane called?" asked the arrogant modeler.

"I don't know" said the novice. He handed over the $5 and pocketed the remaining $95 for himself. Then he goton with his flying!

THE ANSWER TO APRIL’S NAME THAT PLANE

The name of the plane is the Pitcairn Mailplane. Larry Bochenko was the first to answer it correctly andwill receive a free raffle ticket at this month’s meeting. Dan Deitemeyer and Bob Wisinski also answeredcorrectly. This aircraft was designed in the 1920’s specifically to carry air mail. It had a Wright J-5-9 engine. Itcould cruise at 131 mph at a service ceiling of 18,000 feet and had a payload of 500 lbs. Pilots loved the aircraftbecause of its reliability and ease of handling. When crashes did occur, pilots were often able to walk away withminor injuries due to its rugged construction. The tail sections were built up from steel tube and fabric covered.Not often seen in other aircraft, it had a ground adjustable fin and in-flight adjustable tailplane. The mail wascarried in a fireproof metal lined compartment forward of the pilot’s cockpit. See picture below.

MAY’S NAME THAT PLANEIn the 1940’s about 600 of this aircraft were built. 200 of them were issued to the Navy as training aids for anti-aircraft gunners. These aircraft were converted into radio controlled drones. It had a 19’6” length and thewingspan was 30 feet. Empty weight was 1500 lbs. It had retractable landing gear and the max speed was 180mph. The engine was a Franklin 0-300-11 with 150 hp. This aircraft cornered the market for unmanned aerialgunnery targets. Send all responses to Bradford Walters at Bradford@thehoverzone.com.

BUILDING TIP OF THE MONTH by Charlie Benedict

While getting my PT20 ready for covering, I found that the rudder had cracked in two. I came up with a solutionthat did not add any body to the rudder and worked great...maybe it's been done before...I do not know.

I wanted to Fiberglass the two flat halves together, but did not want any build up on the body. I looked aroundthe basement and while walking past the dryer, I saw the solution...Fabric Softener sheets.I got a used one out of the trash, cut the size I needed and laid it over the balsa with 5 min epoxy. Using somewax paper, I laid that over the repair and squeegeed out the excess. I left the wax paper on and put a heavyobject on it. The bond worked great. The fibers in the Softener sheet soaked up the epoxy and worked just likefiberglass cloth, leaving a very flat (almost no thickness) surface.
