MissionEDITS aims at enabling interoperable and multimodal traveller information services based on harmonized traffic data and information gathered on transnational level. This is to be achieved through the set up or improvement of existing traveller information services and of traffic management solutions. These services will provide EDITS users with support before and during their journey within the region as well as across regions.

CENTRAL EUROPE is a European Union programme that encourages cooperation among the countries of Central Europe to improve innovation, accessibility and the environment and to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of their cities and regions.

The provision of interoperable and multimodal traveller information services is seen as major contribution to ensure mobility in cities and regions, as well as to address the challenges of modal split, increasing congestion and costs in the transportation sector. Based on these pre-consumptions various European cities, regions and transport operators have started to provide journey planners to serve their citizens and travellers. Most of these systems only provide information within the area of the respective cities and regions - therefore there is a need for cross-border information and solutions for different transport modes.

EDITS focuses on accessibility improvement to provide interoperable and multimodal traveller and information services based on a harmonised platform for data as well as information exchange. In this way no centralised system will be developed, rather existing structures will be improved, updated and harmonized. The available data will be exchanged through the developed platform also on cross-border level. This will be done through two main services: web based interoperable and intermodal pre-trip information and on trip services which will provide information to the end-users. Furthermore, traffic management will also be tackled within EDITS platform, applying the exchange principle.

Hence, transnational solutions for transport related information exchange will be obtained by bringing together partners on different governmental levels throughout the Central Europe region. This will permit strengthening of internal cohesion of Central Europe countries by improving accessibility within the different regions, giving the highest consideration to the long-term sustainability of the system and developed solutions after the end of the project.

Through its activities EDITS will provide a unique system of traffic and travel data exchange, including multimodal transport solutions. It is designed to provide travellers with efficient and useful services before and during their trip. The system will be developed through several stages:

• ANALYSIS Existing databases, systems and their management will be analysed and studied to understand the current situation and possible improvements.

• STUDY AND DESIGN On the basis of the analysis results, partners will develop and design common EDITS specifications that will allow the harmonisation of existing structures and the set up of a data exchange network among those structures.

• SYSTEM SET UP Following the defined design, the EDITS system and services will be set up, starting from the managing software and all the necessary components.

• DEMONSTRATION AND TESTING The EDITS system will be put in place and tested on three main demonstration areas.

• EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS The testing results will be evaluated and conclusions will be drawn taking also the outcomes of the surveys conducted among travellers accessing the system into consideration. Finally, recommendations will be provided in relation to the results obtained particularly with regard to system efficiency, travellers satisfaction and the necessary interventions for the development of such a platform.

Duration and fundingThe EDITS project was launched in July 2012 and will last until December 2014. It is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, for almost EUR 2.5 Million.

PartnershipThe EDITS consortium embraces thirteen project partners coming from the Central Europe Countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Slovak Republic). The EDITS partners are mainly public institutions, all working together with the aim of sharing mutual knowledge and improving their national traveller information systems.
