Your InvitaTion to eXperience a Catholic

Education“Act justly, love tenderly,

walk humbly with your God.”~ Micah 6:8 ~

Our theme for this year, Walking Together in God’s Love, provides us with a beautiful image of the journey that your children experience daily as they learn and grow in Christ. Our guiding scripture passage this year from Micah tells us what God asks of us: to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with Him. In return, we receive the comfort and joy that comes from knowing that He is with us always!

When you choose Catholic education for your children, you are making the conscious decision to have them experience God’s love as a part of each and every day of their learning journey; you are choosing to have them enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus. In his apostolic exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate, Rejoice and Be Glad, Pope Francis shares signs of holiness in the world today. There we can see the holiness of Catholic education which is lived out in our schools daily: “A community that cherishes the little details of love, whose members care for one another and create an

open and evangelizing environment, is a place where the risen Lord is present, sanctifying it in accordance with the Father’s plan” (145). This is the heart of our mission - to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another.

When we approach education from a Catholic worldview and with a faith infused curriculum, our students become discerning believers, effective communicators, critical thinkers, lifelong learners, collaborative contributors, and responsible citizens. At Edmonton Catholic Schools, we thus strive to prepare our students to contribute to the transformation of society and to achieve success.

For more information on the exceptional opportunities available to your children in Edmonton Catholic Schools, please contact any of the schools directly, phone the District office at 780 441-6000, or visit us online at www.ecsd.net.

To find out if your child is eligible for yellow bus service, please contact your school directly, use the School Finder Tool on the District website or contact Transportation Services at 780 441-6078 or email [email protected]. It is not necessary to complete a new transportation application every year unless your child is moving to another school or the address and/or contact information has changed.

Once your child’s application has been processed, families will receive a phone message directing them to view the bussing information online through PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Entering Pre-K/Kindergarten is an exciting time for your child and an important first step in their Catholic education. We want this transition to be as smooth as possible for you and your child. Each school has an orientation process for your child and will provide further information when you visit and/or register.

The following is a list of commonly asked questions:

How old must my child be to register for an Early Learning program?

Kindergarten programming occurs in all of our elementary schools.• To be eligible for Kindergarten your child must be five years old on or before March 1 of the

school year that they would be starting Kindergarten.

100 Voices is a Pre-Kindergarten program.• Many of our schools offer 100 Voices programming for three year old and four year olds.• To be eligible for the year prior to Kindergarten, your child must be four years old on or by

December 31 of the school year. Fees may apply. • To be eligible for two years prior to Kindergarten, your child should be three years of age

and toilet trained by September 30 of the current school year. Special consideration may be provided to children identified with special needs.

• For further information on 100 Voices progams please contact the school offering the Pre-K program or Genesis Centre at 780 638-6810.

Preschool Outreach• Preschool Outreach is educational programming that occurs in YMCA sites located outside of

our schools.• To be eligible for Preschool Outreach your child must be three years of age by September 30

or four years of age by December 31 of the school year and qualify for special needs and/or English Language Learner (ELL) funding. For further information please contact the YMCA site, or Genesis School at 780 638-1884.

09

How can you make the transition to school go smoothly for your child?

• Talk often about Pre-K/Kindergarten and reassure your child that it will be an exciting experience.• Attend the Pre-K/Kindergarten Open House at your child’s school in the spring.• Help your child develop a sense of responsibility. Encourage your child to learn to look after

his/her belongings.• Read with your child daily and have conversations about the books.• Explore the world in which your child lives. Talk about what your child sees by pointing out

signs, numbers and letters.• Provide opportunities for your child to interact with other children in order to promote the

development of social skills.• Encourage your child to know his/her personal information (i.e. first and last name and phone

number).• Together celebrate the little accomplishments that occur each day.• Pray together.

What should I tell the teacher about my child?

The Early Learning teacher and the school will want as much information as possible. For example:• How does your child feel about coming to school?• Has your child been in preschool or daycare or will this be his/her first experience away from home?• What are your child’s special passions or interests?• What are your child’s special needs? (This includes everything: allergies, fears, unique physical

or medical conditions, previous speech and language intervention, emotional or behavioural patterns, or any major change that might be occurring in your child’s life).

What will my child learn in Early Learning?

In addition to having conversations with the teacher, Alberta Education is a great resource and publishes, “My Child’s Learning “Kindergarten Overview.” The resource is available at the Alberta Education website http://bit.do/religiouskindergarten or you can ask the school to see a copy during orientation. Genesis also publishes a Parent Handbook for Early Learning families.

We welcome you to review the Early Learning website at www.ecsd.net. This provides parents with additional Early Learning information, including videos that represent Early Learning programming in Edmonton Catholic Schools.
