holiday entertaining

1. When planning your party, always start with a theme. A theme will shape

the décor, cocktail menu, food, invites, gifts, music and even the scent of

your home. This year, the top themes all have a classic or nostalgic twist.

Think Charles Dickens, Hollywood in the 1950s or even a rustic cabin

from the turn of the century.

2. A fun theme for the holidays is 1950s retro. I love buying vintage copies

of Good Housekeeping and pulling recipes from them, such as individual

turkey casseroles baked in Le Creuset ramekins. Every year I go on eBay

to fi nd vintage pieces including tableware and glasses to add that chic

holiday twist.

FROM DROP-INS TO SIT-DOWN DINNERS, HOSTING EVENTS OVER THE HOLIDAY SEASON CAN BE A LITTLE OVERWHELMING.

To bring ease back into the season Janette Ewen, one of Canada’s leading

décor and lifestyle experts, has some foolproof hosting and decor tips to

ensure that that your party season is a smashing success.

3. Decorate a nostalgia tree. High-design

trees look great but consider having a

fun second Christmas tree and gather all

those ornaments you made or loved as a

child.

4. Break out those old records. Pick up an

old-school record player online and invite

guests to bring their favourite holiday

albums. Some beloved classics include

A Charlie Brown Christmas and Elvis’

Christmas Album.

5. Always send your guest home with a

thank you gift that comes from the heart.

I love giving my guests a box or tin of my

favourite candy. My guests always smile

when they receive them, as the box is

always full of happy holiday memories.

Feature

by Marie Soprovich Owner Aquarian Renovations

AND

Second Storey Addition brings

Improving a great neighbourhood one

renovation at a time is a delightful

project for any renovation company

and when teaming up with a homeowner

who has a vision for the possible, the

results are often spectacular. The draw

of a desirable family neighbourhood, a

promising real estate investment and a

love for the renovation process as often

seen on shows like " Love it or List it" or

"the Property Brothers", were enough

to compel Tara and Ryan Williams to

see promise in the acquisition of a real "

fi xer upper" and make a purchase in the

Glenora community.

After the purchase, the new

homeowners scouted out a reputable

renovator who had plenty of hands-

on experience in the remaking of this

BEFORE

age and style of home in this type of

neighbourhood. "We saw a number of

Aquarian signs in front of some outstanding

residential renovations. We looked at

their website, talked to others who had

worked with Aquarian and read about a

number of their projects in magazines and

newspapers. We recognized that they

had won numerous awards for their work

and decided to approach them with the

opportunity of working together with us

on this renovation," says Ryan.

"Tara and I have owned a number of

properties over the years and were quite

excited to try our hand at renovating this

little gem. After doing our due diligence,

we selected Aquarian Renovations to work

with us on this project. The results are truly

award winning."

Understanding the issues of a 60

year old house and seeing obvious

challenges in the structure, Aquarian

immediately got to work by consulting

with engineers about possibilities for this

renovation. Over the years there were

some settling issues in the basement

and the foundation needed to be tested

to ensure the structure was solid.

"Before any kind of renovation of this

nature is planned, foundation questions

needed to be answered. Ensuring that

the foundation walls are solid is one of

the fi rst things we need to look at when

considering adding more weight to the

house, whether that is in the addition of

a full second story, adding dormers or

by the shifting of load bearing capacity

when removing walls for the open

concept." Concur Tyler McNaughton,

senior architectural technologist at

Aquarian and Jeremy Pasieka Red Seal

Carpenter and Chief Estimator. "Once

the engineers determined that the

foundation was secure and could bare

the load of a full second story addition,

we moved into full design mode. We

also explored ways to deepen the

basement floor. By strategically

removing the concrete and digging the

ground down a few inches we were

able to remedy the cracked and heaving

floor and pour a new basement slab.

Weeping tile was added to the exterior

of the foundation, we replaced all sewer

and water lines coming in and out of the

house and took advantage of providing

new plumbing opportunities for future

basement development.”

The house design and new roof

lines were worked out between the

homeowners and Aquarian and products

were chosen to maximize the area, style

and classy, comforting feel within the

new floor plan. Three very spacious

bedrooms were added upstairs along

with a huge walk in closet and ensuite

in the master bedroom. An additional

four piece bath was added upstairs and

a practical repeat on the main floor.

Existing bedrooms on the main floor were

redesigned to be a spectacular back entry

mud room with main floor laundry and

" Renovations like this one bring new life to structures that still have so much to offer the homeowner and the community. A properly renovated home uniquely has its own character and a story. There is nothing cookie cutter about a renovation.”

⊲ Redesigned and gutted the entire house to create bright open main floor plan with chef’s kitchen, main floor mudroom c/w laundry and plenty of storage, home office, 4 piece bathroom and a classic look

⊲ Designed and moved staircase to improve traffic flow

⊲ Designed and added complete second story with 3 spacious bedrooms including oversized designer master bedroom, ensuite and walk in closet

⊲ Gutted basement including replacement of cracked concrete floor and updated all plumbing, HVAC and water management systems

⊲ Added good neighbour vantage with front veranda and back deck for maximum yard usage and enjoyment of the outdoors

⊲ Solid exterior finished with Hardy Plank siding, stone pillars all in a large fenced lot

⊲ Impeccable modern selection of finishing details

WHAT WAS DONE

BEFORE

copious amounts of storage space.

This is the perfect place to unload

the groceries, hang all the extra

coats and put away all the boots

and shoes. The other main floor

bedroom was converted into a

very spacious and bright den that

can double as a guest room when

homeowners need the space. In the

meantime it is a perfect main floor

office den with spectacular morning

sun and plenty of working space.

The stairwell at the front entry

was reversed and opened up to

create a bigger space and better

flow of traffic both up and down the

stairs. The extra space is welcoming

for guest arriving at the front entry.

Several walls were removed during

the renovation to open the main

floor. New engineered beams were

installed to support the additional

weight of the second story addition

and the transference of the load to

new support walls. “Stripping the

walls down to the bones is a perfect

way to rebuild a home” says Jeremy

Pasieka of Aquarian. “It provides

an opportunity to look closely at

the structure of the building, repair

anything that is not solid and ensure

that the renovated structure is up to

building code. You wouldn’t believe

some of the things we find in the

walls and ceilings. For example in

this house we found a railroad track

used as the main beam supporting

the existing upstairs and roof. I’ve never

seen that before but it probably explains why

there were cracks in the ceiling! We all had

a good chuckle about that find and you can

rest assured that it has been replaced with

a properly engineered and installed beam.

Renovations are also the perfect time to

repurpose the house, install new electrical,

HVAC, insulation and drywall that transforms

a tired old home like this one was into a

modern beauty.

"Second story additions are such a

practical and affordable way to double

the square footage in an existing home.

Homeowners can even add a little extra

with a cantilevered upstairs as was done

with this house.” Continues Pasieka.

“Renovations like this one bring new life to

structures that still have so much to offer

the homeowner and the community. A

properly renovated home uniquely has its

own character and a story. There is nothing

cookie cutter about a renovation.”

The exterior is finished in classical

craftsman style with the extended front roof,

stone clad pillars and welcoming veranda.

A large wooden deck was added to the

back of the house adding to the living space

for those family BBQs and quiet evenings

on the back deck. The cantilevered second

story more than doubles the size of this

house and the presence of a well-designed

craftsman style house is an appropriate

and classy addition to the established

Glenora neighbourhood.

The industrial look continues to be

a hot trend in interior design for

2016, and one of the easiest ways

to achieve an industrial feel in your home

is by using industrial materials. Because

it is relatively inexpensive and highly

durable, concrete is an obvious choice.

While the concept of using concrete in

design is not new, it is definitely popping

up in new and unexpected applications -

from kitchen countertops and bathroom

vanities to lighting, furniture and even

wall art, clocks, tables and fire bowls,

concrete is increasingly taking center

stage in modern urban décor.

If the industrial look appeals to you,

and you enjoy the occasional do-it-

yourself project, this DIY concrete bucket

stool can be used indoors or outdoors

and will immediately add an industrial

look and feel to your home.

Since many people are intimidated

by the idea of using concrete, this

quick and easy DIY concrete bucket

you to the materials, all for $10 in

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Cut the Dowel

Using a circular saw, cut the

48” long dowel into three

equal 16” long pieces.

2 Drill Holes in the Ends

of the Dowels

Drill a hole in one end of

each dowel. The holes

should be 1" from the end

of the dowel.

3 Wire the Dowels

Together

Run wire through the drilled

holes to loosely connect the

3 dowels. The wire will keep

the legs from coming out of

the concrete.

4 Mark 3 Inches From the

Bottom of the Bucket

Use a Sharpie to mark a line 3

inches up from the bottom of the

bucket. You will fill the bucket with

concrete up to this line.

5 Mark the Location for the Legs

Use a Sharpie to make three

equally spaced marks around the

rim of the bucket. These marks

will serve as guides for positioning

the legs.

6 Fill the Bucket with

Concrete Mix

Fill the bucket up to the 3" line

marked on the outside of

the bucket.

7 Add Water + Mix

Add water slowly, mixing

constantly until the concrete

is the consistency of lumpy

oatmeal. Mix THOROUGHLY.

8 Vibrate Out the Bubbles

Use the hammer to gently tap

(and shake) the bucket to vibrate

air bubbles to the top of the wet

concrete.

9 Set the Legs into the Wet

Concrete

Place the legs into the wet

concrete and position them so

that they lined up with the three

equally placed marks around the

bucket rim.

10 Let the Concrete Cure for

48 Hours

After the legs are placed, let the

concrete cure, undisturbed, for

48 hours.

11 Remove the Stool

Flex the rim of the bucket to

separate the walls from the

concrete. Once the concrete is

loosened, pull the stool out of

the bucket.

12 Dip Dye the Legs

Dip the legs in hi-gloss latex

paint (any colour you like!). Use

a water bottle with a cut-off top

filled with paint to dip the legs.

modest and affordable sunrooms. Apollo

Sunrooms works with over five major

sunroom manufacturers, as well as other

suppliers, to provide our clients with a

complete sunroom product line. Value

is a major consideration when working

with clients during the design process.

"Apollo Sunrooms philosophy is simple – provide quality products and services to construct superior outdoor living structures that exceed our client’s expectations."

Everyone can relate stories about getting

a great price for a product only to find

that the quality or features don’t live up to

expectations. At Apollo, we believe that by

providing ALL of the relevant information

(including features, benefits, disadvantages

and the costs of each) a client can make

an informed decision. By providing

accurate and timely information we

empower our clients to make the decision

that is in their best interests.

Corporate stewardship is another

key element of the Apollo Sunrooms

culture. As a member of the Canadian

Home Builders Association (Edmonton

Region) Renovation Committee, we work

with industry partners to strengthen and

improve relationships with the Alberta

Government, the City of Edmonton and

other municipalities. Apollo Sunrooms is

a proud RenoMark member, promoting

and adhering to a code of ethics for

renovation contractors. By promoting

ethical business and construction

practices we hope to educate the public

and increase consumer confidence

throughout the renovation industry.

Community involvement with

organizations such as Habitat for

Humanity Edmonton, Dogs with

Wings Assistance Dog Society and

minor league sports provides another

avenue for Apollo Sunrooms to give

back. Active involvement by the entire

Apollo team provides opportunities for

all employees to participate and grow

together. Winning the first ever Habitat

for Humanity “Frame Game” was a major

highlight. We proved that with excellent

coordination and effort, ten people could

frame a house from basement to roof in

less than seven hours.

The team at Apollo Sunrooms

continues to be encouraged by the

clients we serve. They confirm our belief

that there will always be a market for

Honouring Renovation Month with Community Service Work

ON OCTOBER 22 AND 23 OF THIS YEAR,

a group of renovators and their suppliers

belonging to the Canadian Homebuilders’

Association - Edmonton Region (CHBA-

ER) Renovation Committee, honoured the

annual Renovation Month by organizing

and delivering a community service project

to a very deserving charity in the Edmonton

area. “This is a fi rst of its kind in Edmonton

whereby local home renovation companies

and their suppliers worked together to

make a signifi cant impact in the community

by collectively undertaking a community-

based charity project,” Renovation

Committee Chair Aquilino Naccarato of

Ackard Contractors indicates.

Committee members discussed how

RenoMark could add value to a segment of

the community and thereby meaningfully

honour Renovators’ Month in Canada

with some action right here in Edmonton.

“The conversation in the committee

moved very quickly to fi nding a renovation

project that could completed in a day

or two. The project needed to involve

time, labour, product and leadership.

We all wanted to do something more to

honour this month than just promoting

on our web pages or advertising at the

renovation show. So we struck up a small

sub-committee led by Angela Hassall

representative of EMCO, found a perfect

project with the Pilgrims Hospice and put

the renovation plans together,” reports

committee member Marie Soprovich of

Aquarian Renovations.

“The support from the renovators

involved was phenomenal,” said

subcommittee coordinator Angela Hassall,

“Ackard and Apollo Sunrooms immediately

stepped up to assess the work that needed

to be done and everyone pitched in to

create a work schedule, fi nd suppliers

to donate product, while the renovators

committed to donations and delivery of

the service work.”

“It was easy to recruit help from our

team..., “shares Marsha from Aquarian.

“We all know the needs of charities in our

city and giving back is a big part of our

company philosophy. I believe that giving

back to the community is as important

for the other RenoMark renovators and

suppliers as well. Besides the joy that

comes from giving we had a lot of fun

working with our industry colleagues

from other renovation companies.”

Committee member Renee Majeau

from City MiniMix concrete concurred,

stating simply, “it was wonderful to

work as a team and have fun, all while

making a significant difference to Pilgrims

Hospice!”

Angela Hassall said, “The renovation

GIFT LIST By Jo Alcorn

Holiday mixologist

A blender is a great item to bring to any party. Bring the fi xings, print up your favourite drink recipe and play bartender for the night. Your host will love this! I love the Panasonic Power Blender that has an electrostatic touch control panel. This is certainly a luxury gift for the foodie or bartender-in-training on your list. panasonic.com

Stocking stu er with a purpose

I love it when companies tie in a charity. Bouclair recently launched a campaign with Starlight Foundation where all proceeds from the purchase of their Nutcracker Oscar go to the foundation – a great stocking stu er idea, table place card or centre piece idea at only $2 a piece bouclair.com

For your pooch

So many people have dogs these days. If you’re a dog owner yourself, you know that there is often a stocking plus many presents under the tree for your hound. My new dog bed collection is reversible and fully washable – not just the cover, the entire bed. I’ve also created throw cushion to match your dog bed – now your puppy can rest and relax in style. Available at shop.ca

Baby it’s cold outside

I am in love with the luxuriously soft comfort of the new Sunbeam heated throw. Its deep colour and soft royal mink plush fabric (faux of course) make it the perfect gift for cold winter nights. It also has a great safety feature – it turns o in three hours, so even if you doze o in its comfort it will automatically turn o . Available at walmart.ca

Kitchen party

Most holiday parties start or end in the kitchen, so why not make a statement this year with a kitchen gift? I love the idea of giving a set of two dishes, one wrapped and the other with an edible hostess gift in it that the entire party can enjoy.kitchenaid.ca

The gift of hope

As many people know, I love to give back. During the holidays for that someone on your list who already has everything they want or need, why not give them something that will help someone else? Plan Canada has so many great options from colourful eco-friendly necklaces and clean water for families, to helping to send a girl to school. I am a huge animal advocate, so I love the idea of gifting a goat to help impact a family’s health and income. These are truly meaningful and heart warming gifts to give and receive. Check out the gifts of hope at plancanada.ca

I often get asked what my go-to holiday gift ideas are. Not all my gifts are decor pieces – it’s often function that I look for in holiday gifts. Here are my top gift ideas this year that will fi t nicely into any decor and, of course, be functional.

Tips and tricks

Cozying up to

FIREPLACE SAFETY

THE WARM AND COMFORTING GLOW OF A FIRE is a welcome treat as winter evenings

bring a crisp chill to the air. Whether you curl up in front of a wood-burning or a natural

gas fi replace, it’s important to know how to enjoy your fi replace safely.

Wood-burning fi replaceWhen a wood-burning fi replace is in use, air is continually drawn out of

the home and up the chimney. This air must be replaced to maintain

the air balance fl owing in and out of the home. This is essential for

the safe operation of all fuel burning appliances. This balancing act

ensures adequate air for complete combustion and ventilation of the

fl ue gases.

If the air balance is altered because of poor air supply or a

blocked chimney, carbon monoxide (CO) and soot can be produced

and down drafting can occur. To prevent smoke and fl ue gases (CO)

from entering your home, follow these precautions:

» When a fi replace is in use, an open damper allows the smoke and

gases to exit.

» Ensure an adequate fresh air supply into your home beforelighting

the fi re.

» Some fi replaces come with their own combustion air duct. If yours

is not equipped with this, you must have a fresh air supply

nearby (such as an open window).

» Keep the fresh air supply open, even overnight, until\

the fi re is completely out.

» After the fi re is out and the ashes are cold (or when

the wood-burning fi replace is not in use) close the

damper. This will prevent air and heat loss up the

chimney, and cold air drafts from coming down

the chimney.

The fi rst line of defense against CO is the proper

installation, use, maintenance and inspection of all

your fuel-burning appliances. The second line of

defense is a properly installed CO detector. When you

are about to purchase a new CO detector, make sure it

is approved to the latest standards. Look for CSA 6.19 or

CSA 6.19-01 on the package.

Consider installing glass doors on your wood-

burning fi replace. The doors will prevent heat in your

home from escaping up the chimney, saving you money

on your heating bill.

You may also want to consider

purchasing a draftstopper. They

are designed to prevent drafts from

conventional wood burning fi replaces

when not in use.

Natural gas fi replaceNatural gas fi replaces can operate over

60 percent effi ciency; whereas, a typical

wood-burning fi replace operates at 10

per cent effi ciency. (Effi ciency refers to

the amount of heat that is extracted from

the fl ame and is used to heat the home).

Remember to have regular inspections

performed on natural gas fi replaces,

along with all natural gas appliances.

Types of natural gas fi replaces:» Fireplace Insert: natural gas

fi replace that fi ts inside an existing

masonry fi replace.

» Natural Vent Fireplace: natural gas

fi replace that has a type B vent (a four

inch manufacturer-recommended

venting pipe used to exhaust the

combustion gases of fi replaces, hot

water heaters and other small natural

gas appliances) going up a fi replace

chase (the enclosure on the outside

of the house that the metal chimney

runs through).

» Direct Vent Fireplace: natural gas

fi replace that uses a single outlet, dual

pipe system to draw combustion air

and vent exhaust. The vent is typically

installed directly behind the fi replace

or slightly above and behind.

» Free Standing Fireplace: wood stove

appearance, with the benefi ts of

natural gas. Can be either natural-vent

or direct-vent.

Other Options» Pellet Stoves and Inserts: They are environmentally friendly,

extremely clean burning and cost effective. Pellets are made

from 100 per cent waste sawdust, dried and compressed,

creating an ideal heating fuel.

» Electric Fireplaces: A great option if you live in an apartment

and you want the look and feel of a fireplace when installing

a gas unit is simply not an option. While they are not meant

to heat a large area, they do provide some added comfort to

a room.

ONE: Why do ants always seem to show up in my home

Firstly, I will say that you probably live in a home that is slab on grade ( a concrete main fl oor entering directly from grade level outside) or possibly your garden and/or fl ower beds are up too close to the underside of your exterior siding. In the majority of cases these two items are the cause.

In the spring, snow melt and excess rain fi ll the ground with surface water. The water will eventually fi nd it’s way to the water table running underground on the hard pan on which the footings of your foundation are placed. In some areas this can be the determining factor as to whether a home can have a basement, crawlspace or be built slab on grade.

When the ground water gets to the point where it is no longer being taken away by the perimeter drainage system (weeping tiles around your home that lead to the city storm

sewer) it will drive the ants hibernating in colonies under the concrete slab up into your home because they do not like wet feet.

What to do: Make certain that your perimeter drainage is clear and running away to the storm system. This is done by a professional drainage company with the proper equipment. Ideally your drainage system should be maintained every three to fi ve years once the home is around 10 years of age.

To get rid of the live ants I would suggest using a spray ant killer known as a residual spray.

TWO: The second most common question is why do I have a lot of moss on my duroid, cedar or tile roof, and what should I do about it? Being in this business for over 50 years I can honestly say that up until 10 to 15 years ago, home owners did not seem to worry about moss on roofs but rather considered it a natural thing that happens – and what will be will be. I still agree with this philosophy because what caused it 50 years ago is the same as what causes it today.

My advice on roof moss is that if you are not overly concerned about what it looks like then leave it alone. Mother nature put it there because we send impurities up into the atmosphere and mother nature brings the residual back down in rain spreading the spore contaminates on areas like roofs, patios and under the shelter of trees. This growth always occurs on north exposures or under the shade of a tree canopy where the spores thrive as algae and eventually moss. You will not fi nd it on sunny west and south exposures.

If it is your desire to remove the moss please ensure that you have a qualifi ed, certifi ed roof maintenance company perform the work.

Decoding THE CODE

QI received an email from a loyal reader who asked if there was a statute of limitations on seeking compensation for damages and

repairs due to the 2013 Alberta floods?

A The Alberta government’s Disaster Relief Program

(DRP) received more than 10,500 applications

after the June 2013 floods, making this program

the biggest and most complex in Alberta’s history.

By the end of 2014, more than 8,400 cases had been

closed and nearly $110 million in financial aid provided.

Despite these efforts, there were flood victims who

still found it very difficult to come up with the re-

sources needed to complete repairs and apply to the

DRP for reimbursement. Families whose cases had

not been resolved were facing unique and challenging

circumstances, particularly with the timing and

deadlines from the government to submit claims.

In late January 2015, the Alberta government announced that it was aiming to close out all remaining DRP files by summer 2015 and were therefore increasing the number of caseworkers to assist flood victims, and were also providing nearly $20 million in immediate funding to assist with repairs. At the time there was still approximately 2000 remaining applicants with open files and so

the government committed to advancing 90% of the necessary funds to homeowners to complete their repairs, with the remaining 10% paid out upon submittal of final receipts by applicants.

Although I was not able to quantify with the DRP

how many files are still open and unresolved, I know

the DRP’s toll free phone number of 1.888.671.1111

and email [email protected] are still active, and so

I would encourage anyone with outstanding claims

or questions to contact them there.

Future Decoding the Code columns will continue

to answer readers’ questions about how the provin-

cial safety codes affect their projects. Email your

questions to me at [email protected]. Be

sure to include which city you live in, as well as your

phone number in case I need to follow up with you.
