Integration & Adaptability
Technology Technology integration will assist students to fit different learning styles. Programs and devices will assist in direct lessons, social learning and also for student exploration and presentations. Arts Art will be integrated using a variety of methods. Using the field journals, students will be required to sketch or use photography for observations during field trips. Throughout the study students will create a poster presentation, which will provide an opportunity to showcase learning and demonstrate their artistic and creative abilities. English Language Learners (ELLs) Strategies for assisting ELLs include: 1) providing additional wait time for student responses to questions; 2) teaching appropriate language and terminology of the subject; 3) clearly marking transition times; 4) periodically checking for understanding and 5) using a variety of methods to explain lessons and concepts.

Summary
We have set out to engage in an interdisciplinary inquiry project based on the current real world issue of food security. The interdisciplinary approach is designed to give grade 7 students the opportunity to critically examine the issues surrounding food security from a local, national and global perspective, as they interact with a number of different academic disciplines. As an inquiry project it will involve making changes to the study based on emergent curriculum. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the laws, regulations, agricultural practices, obstacles and actions that govern the ability to obtain healthy food on a regular basis. Additionally they will explore and discover food security and become part of the solutions for this pressing issue. In working towards the goals and the direction of education within the province of Alberta, this interdisciplinary inquiry study on food security will help develop students’ competencies and allow them to become the engaged thinkers and ethical citizens of tomorrow.

Curricular Outcomes Science 7 Unit A: Interactions & Ecosystems • Investigate and describe relationships between
humans and their environments, and identify related issues and scientific questions
• Monitor a local environment, and assess the impact of environmental factors on the growth, health, and reproduction of organisms in that environment
• Describe the relationships among knowledge, decisions and actions in maintaining life supporting environments
Science 7 Unit B: Plants for Food and Fiber • Investigate plant uses; and identify links among
needs, technologies, product & impact • Investigate life processes and structures of
plants, and interpret related characteristics and needs of plants in a local environment
• Analyze plant environments, and identify impacts of specific factors and controls
• Identify and interpret relationships among human needs, technologies and environments, and the culture and use of living things as sources of food and fiber
Mathematics 7 • Number: Develop number sense • Patterns & Relations: Use patterns to
describe the world and to solve problems • Statistics & Probability: Collect, display and
analyze data to solve problems English Language Arts 7 • Students will listen, speak, read, write,
view, and represent to: • Explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and
experiences • Comprehend and respond personally and
critically to oral, print and other media texts • Manage ideas and information • Enhance the clarity and artistry of
communication • Respect, support and collaborate with
others Social Studies 7
• The Land: People and Places • Power, Authority and Decision Making • Global Connections • Culture and Community • Time, Continuity and Change
What is Food Security? Food security is a condition related to the ongoing availability of food (World Health Organization, 2014). In the world today, 805 million people go hungry on a daily basis (United Nations World Food Programme, 2014). The distribution of food and growing populations contribute to the problem. Food security is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention especially as populations continue to grow. The Government of Alberta (2010) is focused on developing engaged thinkers and ethical citizens. By examining food security, students will develop critical‐thinking skills and learn about local and global issues related to food security. As ethical citizens, students will consider multiple perspectives on the issue of food security. Students will become a part of the solution to this global issue by developing carefully planned suggestions and ideas for improvement.
