With the aim to transform the academic landscape of education towards increased entrepreneurial competence and engagement, Uppsala University is building a package of educational and hands-on activities. The target groups span from relatively early phase students up to ready-to-fly individuals. The content of the different modules differ from practical work on given challenges to individual mentoring of the development of a viable business idea. The overall goal is to provide tools for problem solving and competence on creative work in interdisciplinary teams.

Activities The course Health Innovation - An interdisciplinary approach, an add-on course with the aim to provide insight about innovative processes and how innovative thinking can be applied in projects in the health sector. Students participating in the international student competition iGEM also joined parts of the course.

Uppsala University hosted an Entrepreneurial-Lab partner workshop in October 2017.

Health Innovation – An interdisciplinary approach (Masters/(PhD), course 5 credits)

Activities The curricula of the course have included three main subjects:

• The innovative society, describing the innovation cycle, needs, identification of sustainable innovations • The innovative group, describing group dynamics, experts in team and solution-based creative thinking • Innovations within organisations, discussing different organisational structures (academy, health care, industries), health economy, innovation support and legal aspects.

Teachers were academic teachers and researchers, business professionals, business coaches, representatives from health care innovation organisations, “business angels” and invited international experts.

Students from different educational backgrounds, ranging from medical students and biomedicine students to engineering and business students worked together in interdisciplinary teams to solve health related challenges. A total of 18 students from all three disciplinary domains attended the course 2017.

EIT Health provides funding for emerging companies and SMEs to develop new products and services for areas of interest to EIT Health and its members. The purpose of the funding is to accelerate market entry and create new economic activity. Uppsala University submitted seven applications, €50.000 was granted to CADESS Medical AB and Inossia AB.

CADESS Medical AB develops a decision support system that helps physicians determine who can live with prostate cancer and who requires aggressive treatment to survive. Thereby reducing needless suffering by avoiding treatment that does not prolong life. It also has the potential to reduce healthcare costs – in the US by about as much as 500 million dollars yearly.

Inossia AB develops a new elastic bone cement that can improve the treatment of elderly patients with fragile bones (osteoporosis) who have suffered a fracture of their spinal vertebrae. Co-founder and Uppsala University researcher Cecilia Persson has, together with colleague Malin Nilsson, also secured funding to help optimise production and gain access to the clinical environment.

If you want to go fast – go alone; If you want to go far – go together! ovanligt väl passande.

Page 23: Educate, Innovate & Accelerate - Uppsala University · SensUs Partner Student competition-based Team Uppsense from Sweden won Campus innovators training on the SensUs 2017 creativity

De utmaningar som studenterna tog sig an 2017 var How can Karl Johans- gården become Uppsala’s most attractive workplace? och How can public service workplaces attract and retain young university graduates?
