JCU staff were extremely skilled and helpful, and the course’s internship program allowed me to participate in school life and curriculum development before I’d graduated.Prior to doing my Education degree, I was a science and technology conference coordinator. I was told I was good at explaining things, so I decided to use my science and honours degrees to enthuse others into pursuing science as a worthwhile career option.

I loved studying at JCU and living on campus was a really positive experience. The education classes provided small group discussions to share ideas and develop professional relationships even before I began teaching.

As well as my high school position, I work with a cluster primary school implementing a Transition Science Program for Years 5 and 7, where we do fun things like examining the elasticity of lolly snakes. The high school’s program is linked to the cluster school’s program so students remain engaged with their science education during their transitional period. It means students become critical, analytical thinkers and the flow-on effect makes them become better citizens.

Teaching is a very rewarding profession but it does require

a lot of commitment. Being a people person really helps as you’re always dealing with a variety of personalities, but it’s the everyday challenges that make me want to be a lifelong learner. In 2009, I received a Teaching Excellence Award, which was great recognition for my work. Education really is an inspirational career because it’s your students who will change the world.

Strong foundationsJAMES COOK UNIVERSITY (JCU) is the second oldest university in Queensland and a high-ranking teaching and research institution, with around 19,000 students. CairnsCairns’ idyllic location has seen it evolve from a small seaport, servicing busy industries inland, to a popular tropical destination for visitors from around the world. Cairns lies 350 kilometres north of Townsville, and its population of more than 170,000 people enjoy life in a cosmopolitan coastal city, uniquely positioned between two World Heritage-listed natural icons – the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics Region. So accessible are these regions from Cairns, visitors can enjoy both in one day.

Cairns campus

The Cairns campus is located at the foot of rainforest-covered mountains, 15 kilometres north

of the city centre and adjacent to Cairns’ northern beaches. Officially opened in 1995, this growing campus of some 4,000 students has modern and innovative teaching facilities, and specialist research hubs. New developments include a $30 million, state-of-the-art teaching facility for dentistry and a similar signature facility for the Cairns Institute.

SingaporeSingapore is the commercial, technological, financial and academic global hub of Southeast Asia. It is an island city of five million people, with per capita income nearly the same as Australia’s. Singapore is the perfect setting for JCU’s third tropical campus.

JCU Singapore has two campuses which provide students with access to a full range of facilities and services to support their learning in psychology, business, marketing, tourism, information technology and guidance and counselling. The facilities include lecture and seminar rooms, a fully-equipped library, computer laboratories, an on-site bistro and sporting facilities.

TownsvilleTownsville is Queensland’s second largest city with a population of more than 180,000 people. A thriving industrial city on Queensland’s northern coastline, Townsville is also an administrative and service centre for north-eastern Australia. It is uniquely located

within easy reach of two World Heritage-listed natural wonders – the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics Region. To the west are the savannahs and gulf country of the outback.

Townsville campus

Located on 386 hectares of natural parkland in the suburb of Douglas, the Townsville campus supports approximately 12,000 students. On-campus colleges and halls of residence provide accommodation for around 1,250 students, and there are excellent fitness and sporting facilities.

AccommodationFinding a place to stay while studying at uni is an important decision to make and can strongly influence your university experience. JCU offers access to a wide range of accommodation types to cater for a variety of individual needs and budgets. We can help you find the kind of accommodation that best suits you. Perhaps you would like to live on campus and have all your meals provided, or even on campus with self-catering facilities. cater for approximately 1,250 students. College life provides a great atmosphere for you to meet and make lifetime friendships and connections with fellow students from around the world and outside your academic circles. An added advantage of living on the campus grounds is easy access to uni facilities such as ovals, swimming pools, a gymnasium and tennis and basketball courts.

Most colleges offer full-board accommodation, providing three meals a day while some have self-catering options, where you cook for yourself.

What can accommodation cost?Student halls and colleges on the Townsville campus offer full-board, single room and share options, with a range of prices. An average price per week for a student room in a hall or college with full-board (all meals provided) in 2011 ranged from $270 to $350.

Rental and share accommodation in Cairns and Townsville can cost around $120 to $180 per week for a room in a share apartment or house.

On-campus halls and colleges offer discounts for up-front payments or if you have a brother or sister staying there.

What to expect at universityUniversity is an independent learning environment that will develop your confidence as well as your knowledge and skills.

How is university different from school?Study at university is self-directed. You are responsible for keeping up to date with your study material, weekly reading, practical tasks and submitting assignments on time. You will be immersed in your study area and encouraged to express your thoughts and opinions. If you make the most of your studies, it can be one of the most stimulating and exciting times of your life.

Although it’s an independent learning environment, this doesn’t mean you won’t have help when you need it. For example, student mentors are available to answer your questions and to give advice on what to expect in your classes. Free study skills classes in, for example, time management and essay writing will help you stay on top of your study commitments.

Returning to study?Going to university as a mature-age student can be daunting, but more and more people are discovering that with the stimulation and confidence that university study brings, you gain far more than just a degree. To help you find your feet before you begin studying, JCU offers a five-day orientation course called Uniprep.

Full time or part time – what’s involved?For full-time students taking eight subjects (or 24 credit points) a year, the combination of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions plus reading and preparation time at home, will add up to around 40 hours per week. This is the equivalent of a full-time job. Part-time options are available for most JCU courses, giving flexibility for students with work or family commitments.

How often will I have to go?Each subject has its own amount of contact hours, which are the number of hours you are required to be on campus each week. It depends on your course and your subjects. Usually you can arrange your timetable so that you can have at least one day when you have no scheduled contact hours.

Lectures and tutorials – what’s the difference?Lectures involve a lecturer presenting information to many students in a lecture theatre. In this situation there is limited interaction between the lecturer and the students. Tutorials, however, are small groups of students, led by a

tutor, in which you cover the unit material and interact with the tutor and other students. The tutors are there to help you to understand the material and to expand on it. Some courses also include regular laboratory and practical sessions, field trips or work placements. Some subjects combine lectures and tutorials into lectorials.

Flexible optionsYou can usually design your study timetable to fit around the rest of your life. At JCU the majority of subjects are delivered on campus by face-to-face teaching. A growing number of subjects are also available online (flexible delivery mode), which allows you to fit your study around other commitments. Some subjects will be available in short blocks, known as ‘intensives’ and held during vacations.

In addition, our online services for students mean you can complete many tasks from your home computer.

AssessmentAssessment methods vary between subjects. Generally a subject will have written assignments and examinations. Other assessment could include: tutorial presentations, participation in lectures and

tutorials, contribution to discussions, and the completion of practical, field or laboratory work. Familiarise yourself with the assessment needs early in your subject so you can be well prepared.

Work placementsJCU believes in offering students practical opportunities throughout their studies. That’s why many courses include field trips and work placement components. Placements can occur during study or vacation periods, and could take place throughout northern Queensland, into Asia Pacific or further afield. Many of our graduat es progress to full-time careers with their work placement employers.

Study is completed by interactive communication technology, intensive workshops, and on-site support. The program has already successfully increased the number of qualified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers in Queensland schools.

Bachelor of Education (Professional Development) If you are a teacher who wants to upgrade your qualifications to a 4-year degree, or change teaching areas, this course provides a program of study focusing on professional development.

Graduate Diploma of Education If you already have a relevant degree, the Graduate Diploma of Education is an intensive 1-year course that prepares you for a teaching career. The course is accredited with the Queensland College of Teachers.

Getting involved in extracurricular activities plays an important part in this experience, and JCU’s School of Education is committed to providing you with the best life and learning experience possible.

Professional experience will form a key part of your studies and will give you practical classroom skills from your very first year of study.

As JCU is a regional university, your teaching staff are more accessible than at larger metropolitan universities and are able to offer you more individual assistance. The School is equipped with micro-teaching and computer laboratories, and the JCU library offers excellent resources and research facilities for education students.

Service learning Service learning is designed to broaden your education skills and experience by developing or participating in a project related to your role as a teacher. The School of Education encourages you to focus on a sustainability project during this experience.

You will focus on activities that promote social and environmental responsibility and the skills you learn will prepare you for future roles with students and in the wider community. You may be able to participate in interstate or overseas projects.

Core skills Literacy and numeracy are core skills you need to study education at JCU. During your course you will receive feedback on your skill level in these areas.

On your marks … While assessment methods vary between subjects and courses, generally your assessment will reflect the real work of a teacher preparing a lesson plan, reviewing teacher practice or preparing resources for teaching. In addition, you will be required to provide written assignments such as essays, projects and examinations. Assessment may also be based on giving tutorials or presentations, attending lectures and tutorials, contributing to discussions or completing practical work.

AccreditationAs a graduate, you will be able to apply to register with the Queensland College of Teachers to teach in state, Catholic and independent schools. Teaching opportunities also exist throughout Australia and overseas.

The School of Education at JCU has been training teachers since the 1960s. Graduates will be able to teach across curriculum areas in state, Catholic and independent schools.

A portable qualificationA JCU education degree is a portable qualification that can take you throughout Australia and all over the world. Many JCU graduates have taken the opportunity to travel and teach in Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia and North America.

Other career opportunities exist in government departments, children’s services, family services, education, health, as well as community development and welfare agencies, educational tourist attractions, and support services for families.

Honours

An Honours program is available for those students who demonstrate high academic performance. Honours is available as part of a standard program, but includes additional research-based subjects and projects.

What is Early Childhood Education?

Early Childhood Education focuses on the education of children from birth to eight years of age. The study of Early Childhood Education involves study across a range of disciplines including child development and psychology, theories of learning, curriculum and assessment, and understanding the diversity of learners and learning needs within the early years.

Course overview

Early Childhood Education is a highly-specialised field and this course is the most effective way to enter an early childhood teaching career. The course focuses on children from birth to eight years of age, with a special focus on Kindy, Prep and years 1-3.

The course will prepare graduates for working in education and care services, including teaching in schools and preschools. You will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian or relevant working with children check as per State/Territory) before commencing your professional placements. Online students are required to attend a compulsory 5-day on-campus intensive Professional Orientation Program at

either Townsville or Cairns campus in their final year of study.

Course highlights

Students will enjoy innovative teaching approaches including online delivery of subjects and streaming from one campus to another. Gaining professional experience in schools is integral for education students at James Cook University and commences in the first year of study. This involves practical work in schools in urban and/or regional, rural and remote locations as well as other educational and community sites including some international locations.

Professional recognition

Graduates can apply to register with the Queensland College of Teachers.

Career opportunities

Throughout my schooling I had a habit of helping my friends with their work when they were struggling. I could explain it in a way they would understand and I always enjoyed seeing their excitement when they reached the right answer. I took a year off after high school and during that time I knew I wanted to study education. I applied to various universities, with JCU as my number one preference. JCU has a good reputation for producing great teachers and Townsville was close to my hometown of Charters Towers.

I discovered the Eyles, Hampe, Scholes and Buhôt (EHSB) scholarship, established to attract people who wanted to be good teachers, via the JCU website and applied right away. It was the first year that the scholarship was offered and I was successful.

The scholarship has allowed me to learn and develop my skills in the classroom and put educational theories into practice, while studying. Because of the extra classroom time I have had, I can concentrate on polishing my other skills during my professional work experience. My confidence in the school environment has also improved.

By completing my mentoring experience at different schools, the scholarship has helped me build professional relationships. I have seen different teaching styles and methods and I have developed a support network

of teachers who share ideas, opinions and provide guidance. Working with teachers in diverse classrooms has also helped my skills in getting to know students.

What I enjoy most about my course is working with students in the classroom. It’s a wonderful experience and JCU allows you to complete your professional experience in different states, rural towns or urban cities.

After graduation I plan to go back home to Charters Towers, as it is a welcoming community and I look forward to teaching my own students.

In Year Two at school I was sent home because I couldn’t write my own name and I was asked by my teacher to practice it at home. I am now the first person in my family to go to university. Wanting to give back to Indigenous education was the main reason I chose my particular area of study.Education is a major part of what is needed to close the gap and will increase the positive outcomes in other areas such as housing, economics and general wellbeing. To see your students be part of making that difference would be wonderful. Now there are many initiatives and programs in place where Indigenous people have more opportunities. Programs such as the Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP) have supported me in achieving results, and I was awarded the Academic

Undergraduate Award (NAIDOC) for my efforts.

I started studying at TAFE doing a diploma, which meant I only had three years to complete a full degree with JCU. Because of my family commitments at the time, I did ask myself the question, ‘do I want to do this or not?’ But in the diploma year I had the opportunity to visit an Indigenous community school in Alice Springs and realised that yes, I really did want to do this.

Being able to study externally means being able to balance family and home life while being a full-time student. I also have some amazing ‘study buddies’ – girls from Mossman, Maryborough and the Torres Strait. Their support and networking has been critical for me.

When I finish I hope to be a classroom teacher in the Tablelands/Johnstone region. For me it’s all about passing on opportunities to children and validating their faces and voices.

What is Primary Physical Education?Health and Physical Education teachers are responsible for the coordination and teaching of health and physical education in primary schools. They are also involved in coaching, coordination of sports events, and are qualified primary teachers who are able to teach across all curriculum areas.

Course overviewThis course focuses on teaching Physical Education to Years 1 to 7 in addition to general curriculum areas. The course places strong emphasis on gaining interpersonal communication, planning, organisation and management skills along with gaining expertise in health and fitness areas, including fitness assessment and sport and exercise nutrition.

What is Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP)?

RATEP is a community-based teacher education program offered in partnership with Education Queensland and TAFE. The 4-year Bachelor of Education program is available to Indigenous students who live in locations with access to a RATEP site, and who have achieved entry into the Bachelor of Education (Primary) based on their OP or other direct entry criteria.

Alternatively, Indigenous students who have completed a Diploma of Education (ATSI) from Tropical North Queensland TAFE will receive a full year of credit at JCU and follow a full-time 3-year equivalent program to complete the Bachelor of Education.

Bachelor of Education (Primary) on Thursday Island

James Cook University offers its Bachelor of Education (primary) in partnership with the Queensland Department of Education and Training on its campus on Thursday Island. This enables Indigenous people to remain within the Torres Strait whilst completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Education.

Students can enter the Bachelor of Education (Primary) based on their OP or other direct entry criteria. Alternatively, students can undertake James Cook University’s Tertiary Access Course and commence their Bachelor of Education at the same time. James Cook University staff and Education Queensland Teacher Coordinators ensure students have on-site support for their studies.

I have known since I was in Year 8 that I wanted to be a teacher. I’ve always liked teaching others what I know and chose to specialise in Mathematics and Business because of my strong interest in these areas.

As soon as I graduated from high school, I was lucky enough to be given a job as a teacher’s aide. Therefore, I was able to work at a high school while completing my degree at JCU. This gave me great insight into my prospective career, and I knew what the job was going to be like, which is great.

What I enjoyed most about the course at JCU was the flexibility, as it allowed me to work in a local school while completing my studies.

The highlight of my time at JCU was my professional experience placements. These placements enabled me to travel to places such as Mount Isa and the Atherton Tablelands. Plus, I was able to gain a variety of different experiences and meet other educators in Queensland.

In a typical week studying my course, I attended scheduled lectures, workshops and tutorials, studied in my own time, socialised with friends and worked part time.

Since graduation, I have secured a position with Education Queensland at a local high school in Townsville. I have registered with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) and I am looking forward to a challenging yet rewarding year ahead.

What is Secondary Vocational Education?

Vocational Education teachers are qualified to teach within at least one vocational or trade area in addition to a key learning area such as English, Maths, Science, Arts, Health and Physical Education or Study of Society and Environment.

Course overview

This course is designed for people with a trade qualification who would like to teach in secondary schools. Trades taught in schools include business, construction trades, hospitality, design and technologies, technical drawing and manual arts.

You will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing your professional placements.

Course highlights

Students will enjoy innovative teaching approaches including online delivery of subjects and streaming from one campus to another. Gaining professional experience in schools is integral for education students at James Cook University and commences in the first year of study. This involves practical work in schools in urban and/or regional, rural and remote locations as well as other educational and community sites including some international locations.

Professional recognition

Graduates can apply to register with the Queensland College of Teachers.

Career opportunities

What is the Graduate Diploma of Education?

The Graduate Diploma of Education is a professional preparation program for students who already have an undergraduate degree and want to become a teacher or work in fields related to education.

This course provides graduates with the opportunity to qualify for a teaching profession in one year of full-time study. It is an intensive program meeting the requirements of the Queensland College of Teachers for registration as a teacher. Daniel EganStudying Bachelor of Education (Primary, Physical Education)

My biggest concern was that I hadn’t studied since high school, but JCU have incredible programs to help mature age students bridge the gap and get back into study. They made it very easy.

My previous career spanned 14 years playing in the National Basketball League with the Melbourne Tigers, the Brisbane Bullets and the Townsville Crocs. One of the requirements of professional basketball players is to go into school communities and promote the game. After all those years of teaching kids basketball, I realised I had extensive experience working in schools, plus I really enjoyed it. I wanted a definite career I could still be doing in 20 years

time so I enrolled in a Bachelor of Education at JCU.

I like the facilities at the Townsville campus and enjoy spending time researching in the library and just chilling out in the cafés.

The education degree covers an array of different interests. I’m undertaking the physical education major, so it’s an advantage having played basketball. My course is 75 per cent education based and 25 per cent sports science, so I’m

enjoying learning how the body works and relating it to what I have done before. When I’m on prac, I tell the students you can’t play career sport forever, and I’ve seen a real turn around in their attitudes when I explain the importance of study.

When I graduate I’d like to teach overseas initially, then return to northern Queensland and become a classroom and physical education teacher. If I can develop a basketball program at the school, that will be a real bonus.

What is Professional Development?The Bachelor of Education (Professional Development) is a 1-year program that provides professional upgrading to a 4-year qualification for teachers with 3-year qualifications, or for 4-year trained teachers wishing to change their teaching area of specialisation.

Early Childhood majorChildcare workers holding a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) or Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Studies) who are required to upgrade their qualifications can complete this major to gain accreditation with the Queensland College of Teachers. Registered teachers can also change focus and obtain qualifications to teach Early Childhood students by completing this major.

Primary majorFor those teachers who currently hold a Diploma of Teaching or equivalent 3-year qualification, successful completion of this major will allow you to upgrade your qualifications to a 4-year degree and maintain registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. Existing registered 4-year trained teachers can also change focus and obtain qualifications to teach Primary students by completing this major.

The Diploma of Arts is a 1-year course of introductory arts and social science subjects. Students can choose from a broad range of subjects including archaeology, education, history, media, politics, languages and literature.
