The eagle is a symbol of Alert Bay be-cause you see eagles everywhere, downtown, on the beach, and tourists take pictures of them. They are awe-some looking birds, and there are more eagles than crows and ravens. Eagles always go to the beaches when people dump fish heads and fish guts there. This is the reason I chose an eagle for the symbol of Alert Bay.

This is why I think the thunderbird repre-sents Alert Bay. The thunderbird was one of the first ‘Namgis people. The thunder-bird saw a man struggling to lift the beam of the big house, so he transformed into a man and asked him if he could help. He transformed back into a thunderbird and lifted the heavy beams. That’s why the thunderbird represents the ‘Namgis.

CHESLAKEES ELEMENTARYExploration in Kindergarten
This year Cheslakees has three classes of full-day kindergarten. With 51 students and a small staff of four teachers, a child and youth care worker, a secretary and a principal, Cheslakees boasts a warm and close knit environment. This year the students have participated in community building activities such as making a peace-quilt, riding the Polar Express, frequent visits to Sunset Elementary and ice-skating. Huckleberry House and Strong Start share the Cheslakees building and contribute to the positive atmosphere and focus on early childhood education.

Our Student Chief and Council plays a very important role in our
school. They help share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with the teachers and principal. They
help promote fun healthy activities.
They help the students raise funds for school wide projects. They assist the community when they are in need of aid. Being on Student Council is something that will help our students
become responsible and active members of the community.
