Department Head's Report
Another academic year is winding up in theDepartment ofCommunity Health andEpidemiology with a huge bang; thefollowingresearchers have received awhopping $550,000 in peer-reviewedfunding asprincipal investigators: YukikoAsada, Mark Asbridge, LeslieAnneCampbell (*2!), George Kephart,Jong Kim (*2!), and SusanKirkland.Congratulations, this is a greatindividual achievement, one that reflectsmuchhard work and scientific reflection. Welook forward to seeing the results ofthoseprojects as they appear in the peer-reviewedliterature. Of course, I also want tocongratulate our MSc and PhDcohorts for asuccessful year of learning and progresstowards theirdegrees. I look forward tointeracting with many of you over thesummerand renewing efforts in the fall.
Education UpdateConvocation
Congratulations to CH&E MSc graduates Eileen Burns and Laura Keeler. Plan oncelbrating their convocation with them on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 9:00 a.m.
Admissions
The MSc Admissions Committee reviewed55 applications. To date, 13 students haveconfirmed acceptance to begin the programinSeptember 2017.
Funding
It is a very succesful funding year for CH&E students.Three incoming MSc students, Natalie Parks,Jenna MacDonald and Kaitlin Baur receivedNova Scotia Graduate Scholarships. Natalie Parks and Jenna MacDonald, also receivedKillam Scholarships. Sam Jessula and Alex Legge received CIHRFrederick Banting and Charles Best CanadaGraduate Scholarships. Kyle Johnson, Alysia Robinson and Sally Miller were awarded student funding from theMaritime SPOR Support Unit. Sally Miller was also accepted to theBeatrice Hunter CancerResearch Institute Cancer Research Training Program. Nine current and prospective studentssubmitted applications for the NSHRF ScotiaScholars Award. Hopefully, there are more award announcements to follow.
