Take a Deep Breath…

Like you, I have been very busy at work, and last week was especially busy with

CLCA activities. My week included meeting or talking with several C-27 contractors in the field, and at CLCA meetings such as LA/SGV, Pacific Coast Chapter, and the Channel Islands Chapter.

In my meetings with contractors, when I would ask – “How are you?...What’s going on?...How is business?...or whatever came to my Midwestern mind as a greeting – I noticed

almost 100% of the contractors, and lots of others, would first take a Deep Breath before they answered. This got me to thinking. Could it be that that reaction is from a built-in unconscious response from our bodies wanting more oxygen? Perhaps to help bring clarity to our thinking process before we respond to questions dealing with complicated, emotional or sensitive issues? Hmmmm.

When I asked these questions last year, I immediately got sighs and head shaking before responses. I’ll take all this as a sign that things are much better now than they were last year. This is not to say that good times are without their own pressures (labor shortages, increasing wages, etc.). But pressures related to business manage-ment are definitely easier to deal with than those related to business survival, as had been the case in recent years.

As it turns out Breathing is good and so is Business! Here are some tips on the subject of proper Breathing…

From the:

Proper breathing goes by many names. You may have heard it called diaphragmatic breathing, abdominal breathing, or belly breathing. When you breathe deeply, the air coming in through your nose fully fills your lungs, and you will notice that your lower belly rises. The ability to breathe so deeply and powerfully is not limited to a select few. This skill is inborn but often lies dormant. Reawakening it allows you to tap one of your body’s strongest self-healing mechanisms.

So, deep breathing does not have to be limited to those prac-ticing yoga or meditation. Try a little deep breathing for clarity of thought and some new ideas. And while you’re at it, relax and think about how you are going attend one of our upcoming Chapter events! See you soon.

21st Century Marketing

Website Marketing Strategies By Ron Perry, egniteBIZ

Can your business improve with a few strategic words placed on your website?

What about tapping into tools that really let you know about your audience … without spending money? Is there a way to truly make your company – large or small – stand out online and be seen?

Short answer: You bet. Longer answer: With so many businesses competing for the top spot in search engine results, it’s easy to get lost. But, it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s how you can tap into local traffic and take very necessary steps to grow your web presence, improve search engine rankings, and, ultimately, expand your exposure. These tricks can improve your website visibility in local search results, grabbing the attention of your potential customers.

Your Website – Keywords and Meta TagsWe’re going to get into the down and dirty in your website backend real quick with two concepts: meta tags and keywords.

Keywords are exactly what you think they are: words that are key to describing your business. These are words potential customers are using to find your business and should be related to your business.

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide information about a webpage for search engines and website visitors. Correct use of

these meta tags can have a significant impact on your presence online. The more descriptive, attractive and relevant the description, the more likely someone will click through.

Install Google AnalyticsIf you don’t know what Google Analytics is, haven’t installed it on your website, or have installed it but never look at your data, it’s time to change that. Installing it helps your business by answering questions like:

• How many people visit my website and where do they live?

• Do I need a mobile-friendly website? (Hint: yes, you do!)

• What websites send traffic to me?

• What marketing tactics drive the traffic?

• Which pages on my website are the most popular?

• How can I improve my website’s speed?

• What content do my visitors read?

Call-to-ActionWhat’s the most important action on your website? Filling out a lead generation form? Buying a product? Whatever the action, you need to make it obvious for people and easy for them to execute with a call-to-action in the header. This plays a paramount role in optimally converting your visitors into customers. Make it acces-sible on every page, above the fold.

Other PlatformsSet up your Google Plus Local Page and Optimize it Correctly – Google Plus is a necessity thanks to its Local Page optimization. Focusing your efforts on optimizing it can lead to high rankings, pins on local maps and more.

Create and Optimize Other Business Citations – Google is important, but so are other search engine platforms. Your business name, address, phone and services need to be the same on Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yelp, and beyond. And, you need to be listed on all of them, resulting in higher exposure in your local, organic search results.

Encourage Customer Reviews – Customer reviews on social media can be integral in your success. Aside from delivering exceptional customer service and services, you’ve got to ask people to let others know about their experience. Often, businesses offer incentives for reviews, such as “write a review and save 10% on your next service,” etc. You want to get people talking (so long as it is good) and you also want to thank them for talking with personal messages and sharing reviews/engaging your customers on your social platforms.

Ron Perry is an expert in digital marketing and a managing partner at egniteBIZ, a company dedicated to growing business online presence through the development of high-end custom sites and targeted online marketing strategies. He can be reached at (877) 379-7888 x710 or [email protected]. Ron will be the Keynote Speaker at the CLCA Regional Educational Event and Membership Night September 28 hosted by the SFV Chapter.

Village Nurseries and Star Roses and Plants Expand Agreement• New Varieties Includes World’s First Dwarf Jacaranda

Village Nurseries Wholesale LLC and Star® Roses and Plants, a leading plant genetics company based in West Grove, PA.,

have expanded their current partnership with the introduction of significantly important regional new plants including the world’s first dwarf Jacaranda tree.

According to David House, Village Nurseries CEO, the specialty grower for landscape professionals is placing into production several new varieties as well as trialing and evaluating many more, including the world’s first dwarf Jacaranda, ‘Bonsai Blue’ PP# 26,574. ‘Bonsai Blue’ was bred in Japan then sent to Hochberg Export in Israel for the grafting process to take place. After purchasing the grafted plants from Israel and bringing them to California, they will be available later this year as a bush, and even-tually a tree to about 20 feet tall.

Omer Hochberg, president of Hochberg Export Ornamental Plants Ltd., commented, “Jacaranda ‘Bonsai Blue’ is a spectacular new innovation, a great plant with rich blue flowers, attractive foliage, and compact growth. Hochberg are delighted to be working with Village Nurseries in bringing this beautiful plant to the California landscape.”

“Village Nurseries offers landscape professionals regionally appro-priate plants that are unique, patented and exclusive for both

residential and commercial uses,” explained House. “Bonsai Blue represents a breakthrough in plant breeding and, as such, reflects our commitment to increase our internal investment in new plant varieties while allowing designers and architects to create signature designs.”

Star Roses and Plants and Village Nurseries are also working on introducing varieties of Buddleia and a dwarf Cupressocyparis leylandii called ‘Shorty’ PP# 19,618, in addition to several new varieties of Grevillea, Leucodendron, Lomandra, Photinia, Raphiolepis, and Tecomaria.

House is also excited about Village Nurseries’ new Landscape Architect and Design Group which was formed to help landscape architects and designers become familiar with new plant products during the trialing stage. “We want feedback from the top profes-sionals on how these plants grow and perform,” he said.

Peter Kruger, director of new products and licensing at Star Roses and Plants, commented, “Village Nurseries’ Landscape Architect and Design Group (LADG) brings a unique opportunity for our company to get new plants into the hands of landscape profes-sionals much faster. We are working very hard to ensure that Village Nurseries has first opportunities of all our new plants for their LADG Program.”

Understanding ‘Reduced Risk’ Pesticides From GreenIndustryPros.com

The EPA’s Office of Pesticide Program’s Conventional Reduced Risk Pesticide Program expedites the review and regulatory

decision-making process of conventional pesticides that pose less risk to human health and the environment than existing conven-tional alternatives.

The goal of this program is to quickly register commercially viable alternatives to riskier conventional pesticides such as neurotoxins, carcinogens, reproductive and developmental toxicants, and ground-water contaminants. This ensures that these reduced-risk pesticides get into the marketplace and are available to LCOs as soon as possible.

The EPA says that reduced-risk pesticides offer several advantages, including low impact on human health, lower toxicity to non-target organisms (birds, fish, plants), low potential for groundwater contamination, low use rates, low pest resistance potential, and compatibility with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.

Several pesticides – from suppliers including Dow, DuPont, PBI/Gordon, Valent and Syngenta – have been registered as reduced-risk for use in commercial and/or residential turf settings, with others on the way.

Visit the EPA website for more information on the Conventional Reduced Risk Pesticide Program.

6 Signs You Are Over-Fertilizing Your Plants By Richard Restuccia, Jain Irrigation

“If a little is great, and a lot is better, then way too much is just about right!” – Mae West

When it comes to fertilizing plants Mae West’s advice can be deadly. Plants receiving the proper amount of fertilizer

respond quickly in growth and look great. The result makes it temping to give them more fertilizer (in dose, frequency or both) and often this is a mistake. Below are six signs you can easily recognize to determine if you are giving your plants too much fertilizer:

1. Yellowing and wilting of lower plant leaves2. Browning of leaf margins and tips3. Black brown or rotting roots4. Slow to no growth5. Leaf drop6. Crust of fertilizer on soil surface

The signs for over-fertilizing your plants are very similar to those from overwatering plants. However, the signs of over fertilization will occur quickly after your fertilize. You will also recognize over fertilization because you know you were tempted to push the limits. Always read and follow the label directions.

Why Do Plants Need Fertilizer?Plants need to be fertilized because most soil does not provide the essential nutrients required for optimum growth. Even if you are lucky enough to start with great garden soil, as your plants grow, they absorb nutrients and leave the soil less fertile.

What Happens to the Plant When You Over-Fertilize?When you add too much fertilizer to the soil plants cannot take up water. Plants rely on an osmotic pressure gradient in order to collect water. When the concentration of dissolved solids rises continuously from the soil around the roots to the core of the root, this causes water to flow into the plant. When the pressure around the roots gets too high the flow of water reverses. This is where the term burning your plants comes from. The water is flowing from the leaves out the roots and the leaves burn because they don’t have water to cool them.

Plants adjust to variations in the level of nutrients around their roots but they do best when the level is consistent. This is one of the main benefits of fertigation. Fertigation provides a little bit of fertilizer each time you water so the level around the root stays consistent. This is much better than occasionally shocking your plants with fertilizer. Plants are just like us. We perform better and feel better when we don’t get to full or too hungry. Moderation is the key for our plants and us.

Too much fertilizer can be bad for the environment. If you add too many nutrients excess fertilizers are leached into our ground water, rivers and oceans. This is a concern for people with a few plants because cumulatively in landscapes the amount adds up quickly. Farmers are concerned too because many use large amounts of nitrogen for their crops.

How to Save an Over-Fertilized PlantWhen you do get carried away with fertilizer or just have a buildup of fertilizer in your potted plants there are some steps you can take to save your plants. Leach the fertilizer out of the soil with a long watering taking the fertilizer out of the root zone or out the bottom of the pot. If there is a crust of fertilizer on the surface of the soil remove it carefully. Don’t take more than ¼ of soil with it. Remove the wilted or and burned leaves. Stop fertilizing and rethink the amount you are using. You have a good chance of saving the plant.

You really don’t have to be a chemist to be a good gardener or grower. However, awareness of how fertilizers impact your plants will improve your success rate. If you enjoyed this article please subscribe to the blog or follow me on twitter H2oTrends.
