LEARNING and INNOVATION

• It seems that ’learning’ has lost its meaning in everyday language

• It became synonymous with ”information acquisition”… which is, in fact, very loosely connected to learning

• Learning is not about knowing what other people already know, it is about creating solutions to our problems in our time

• Through learning we develop our capacity to create and be a part of the process of creating the future

• Learning happens through interaction, reflection and practices –with humans ideas, information, and the self

About education

• Is an art, a social activity, the result of our being in the world and our interaction with that world

• Related to interactions among human beings • Especially a reciprocal relation among

students and teachers in real-time • Where not all teaching is done by the

teacher, and • Not all learning is done by the student

About teaching and classrooms

• Basic assumptions: • Nothing can replace the learning and the teaching in the

classroom • The classroom is not a physical space but a social learning

laboratory. • Learning happens through human interaction, practices and

reflection derived from being in the world and the need to cope• Information may be accesible and free, however, the learning

necessary to understand it, to make sense of it and use it demands especial competencies and training

• Nothing can replace the effectiveness of the direct contact/interaction between human beings

The educational transformation

• Social Innovation: SHADE – Face-to-face education, shared and distributed in

real time– c- and d-learning –NOT e-learning

• Technological Innovation: INCA– Holistic platform to share education – Digital classrooms, digital communication and

digital storages

New concepts or new versions of old concepts

• Collaborative education/teaching (c-teaching);• Collaborative learning (c-learning);• Distributed education/teaching (d-teaching);• Distributed learning (d-learning); • Digital Self-education; (e-learning)

SHADE (Social innovation)• Shared and• Distributed• Education

• SHADE is an opportunity to: – Distribute knowledge from areas of high concentration of

knowledge resources to areas o low knowledge density– Use ICT to create nearness and proximity instead of

institutionalizing distance– Transform discrete events (lectures, labs, seminars, etc) in 24/7

education mixing Synchronous and asynchronous communication

• SHADE demands:– Highly interactive education, real-time– New pedagogical and didactical approaches– Organizational and social transformations

What did we do with ICT?

ICT gave us the possibility to create a shared social space to interact, to share and develop both practices, knowledge and skills in a new and richer social context

GAINS

• 3-4 times more graduates per time unit at more or less twice the cost of producing the own graduates in Kista (quantity)

• Development of a more advanced network of competences plus new and richer educational programs and research (quality)

• A new approach to education

• A new educational program/profession/Research

• New didactical and pedagogical methods

• New ways of administrating and organizing higher education• A new environment/classroom prototype

Innovation & the Law of Jante

• “Mediocrity and anonymity are the safest choice. If you opt for them, you’ll never face any major problems in life. But if you try to be different … “’

• “You are nobody, never even dare to think that you know more than we do. You are of no importance, you can do nothing right, your work is of no significance, but as long as you never challenge us, you will live a happy life. Always take what we say seriously and never laugh at our opinions.”

• “You are right. If you’re a nobody, if your work has no impact, then it deserves to be praised. If, however, you climb out of that state of mediocrity and are a success, then you’re defying the law and deserve to be punished’.

Education: without limits… as the brain… as communications… as networks… as the future

“Human beings are more limited by their imagination than by their tools ”
