KEYNOTE | Consumer to Creator - The Student as

Both the Learner and the Teacher with Matt Monjan

Not only does today’s student want to be engaged through technology, media, and conversations at the same time, they also want to be able to instantly share their own content, ideas, and creativity with their peers and, in fact, the world. Our students have progressed beyond consumers of content to become producers and publishers. How do we, as educators, teach to someone who is technically proficient, and social media-minded? During this session we’ll explore different avenues in which the traditional model of learning is replaced with a challenge that requires students to draw on prior learning, acquire new knowledge, and tap their creativity to fashion solutions. A little about Matt | Matt Monjan has blended technology and education for more ten years in the worlds of both business and K-12 instruction. Prior to joining the Discovery Education team in 2004, Matt designed, developed, and implemented adult education and certification programs for two of the largest trade associations in the country. At Discovery, Matt has worked with classroom teachers on the nuts and bolts of implementing technology and with administrators on using data from technology management to develop effective strategies for technology integration. He has pioneered innovative uses of often neglected features of technologies such as closed captioning. He is based in Discovery Education's World Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD and is currently the Director of Account Management for the Discover Educator Network. Matt speaks across the country including presentations at local, state, and regional conferences including CUE, eTech, Ohio, FETC, MASSCUE, MSET, PETE&C, and VSTE.

★ Unless otherwise noted, sessions are applicable to all curriculum areas. ★ iLearn with iPads Multipurpose Room A [S1, S3] Kyle Schutt, DEN Manager, Discovery Education Intrigued by this latest touch-based technology? Wondering how these new devices might reshape the learning landscape of our schools? Join us as we explore techniques for building a mobile learning toolkit powered by Discovery Education content. We’ll also highlight the DE mobile site as we shift our focus from consuming content to creating content on the iPad. Checking for Understanding in a Digital World Multipurpose Room A [S2, S4] Kyle Schutt, DEN Manager, Discovery Education Research shows that when teachers understand formative assessment processes and students participate in them, BOTH achievement and motivation increase. Save time and effort, and avoid frustration, by leveraging the power of formative assessment to inform your instruction. Come learn how to use formative assessment tools including Discovery Education's Progress Zone and free web 2.0 resources to find out what your students know so you can teach them what they need. This session highlights Discovery Education Assessment, a subscription based service. Trial requests for the service can be sent to [email protected]. Learning Gone Digital for Administrators Multipurpose Room B [S1] Whitney Mihoulides, DEN Director, Discovery Education We’ll dive into the database that makes DE streaming work during this session. At the end of the session you’ll know how to find and reset usernames and passwords, shuffle users and run usage reports within the Discovery Education site. We’ll also explain technical terminology in easy-to-understand language, examine the difference between streaming and downloading and explore bandwidth management strategies. This session is specifically designed for those users with administrative rights within Discovery Education. Layers of Learning with Google Earth: Multipurpose Room C [S1] A Free Round trip Ticket to Anywhere in the World Lindsay Hopkins, DEN Director, Discovery Education Google Earth has many layers, literally! Come explore the layers within Google Earth and see how you can use them in your instruction. Take students on virtual field trips that provide powerful geographic visualization - ruler tools, embedded videos, overlays of images that make the actual terrain of the earth a part of the learning experience, and more. We'll investigate up-to-date seismic activity, weather data, sea surface temperatures, 3D buildings and learn how to add our own customized content. Powering Up Your Presentations Multipurpose Room C [S2, S3] Lindsay Hopkins, DEN Director, Discovery Education We all know that the computer, project, and PowerPoint software have replaced the old slide project, hundreds of tiny static photos, and the phrase "next slide please." But did you know that PowerPoint can also be combined with a myriad of videos, sounds, effects and interactive boards to create an engaging multimedia presentation? During this session we'll explore the necessary (and not-so-scary) steps for building an engaging multimedia presentation. This session is for all curriculum areas but will use examples from Social Studies and Science. Mashed Media: Old Media, New Web, and Your Own Great Stuff HD Theater [S1, S2] Hall Davidson, Director of Learning Initiatives, Discovery Education For fantastic, connection-free classroom assets, capture or download Web 2.0 creations, mix with both subject-area resources and your original creations: video, voice, and images. Explore how content on the web can be captured for editing on your desktop with both free and low cost tools. Incorporate curriculum-based media in wildly engaging ways. Explore the legality, the benefits, and lots of engaging examples from Web 2.0 sites. Create on the web, capture locally, and build curriculum-rich projects and lessons.

Green Screening: Because You Can! TLC Room [S1, S2] Mark Perlman, PA DEN Leadership Council, DEN STAR, Philadelphia Public Schools Green Screening is a great way to for your students show their creativity. Instead of just talking about the topic, they can now be a part of the topic. Imagine researching an ecosystem then reporting your findings in the middle of that ecosystem? Students will be more excited when they discover that they can do an oral report without actually getting up in front of the class. Join us to find out how easy it is to do: samples, examples, tutorials, and live green screening! STEMulating Student Engagement with Digital Storytelling Discovery Science Room [S1, S2] Tracy Carpenter, MD DEN Leadership Council, DEN STAR, Resurrection-St. Paul School Many teachers think of digital storytelling as only being a good fit in a Language Arts and Social Studies classroom. Not true! Digital Storytelling represents a great learning experience across all curricular areas - including math and science. Learn how to implement digital storytelling in your classroom using teacher and student resources from Discovery Education and Web 2.0 tools. Explore how to blend media-rich, inquiry-based content with creative instructional strategies to engage students in STEM-related content, reinforce writing skills and encourage collaboration.
