GLOBAL FOOD SAFETY TESTING SCENARIO

In the past few years, the food safety testing market has grown remarkably across the globe

on the back of regulatory developments, increasing private sector participation and growing food borne illness. Stringent regulatory norms in the global food industry, have boosted the food diagnostics sector. As per the latest estimations, the global food safety testing market is likely to witness an impressive growth in the coming years as almost every country in the world is adopting appropriate measures in this regard. Food safety testing, which examines food products for disease causing organisms, chemical residues and other hazardous material, is also gaining momentum due to supportive regulatory paradigm. Across the globe, food borne diseases

have been a cause of concern for the governments as well as consumers. The impact and cost of food contamination have been enormous in the recent years. Backed by factors such as increasing number of tests being demanded by authorities, strengthening global trade and proliferation in the number of cases of food borne illness, the food safety testing products market may reach USD 11.4 billion by 2015. As consumers are becoming more aware of their food quality, an increasing demand for safe food will further fuel growth in the market. In the global food safety testing market, pathogen testing represents the largest segment, followed by GMO testing. With GMOs being rapidly introduced in the market, the growth in this segment is expected to surpass other testing segment growth.

T he objective of setting up EFRAC is to provide international level testing and R&D services

to food manufacturing, food processing and export units with universally acceptable analysis results. To achieve this objective we have ensured that the world’s best things find their place at EFRAC … right from designing the laboratory to procurement of instruments.

It is because of this passion that we are equipped to compete with any of the internationally renowned laboratories today. We are committed to provide timely services, customer support and reliable and highly precise results. We owe these commitments to the most sophisticated technical setup, highly trained manpower and the extremely robust and advanced IT systems.

FOOD SAFETY CLINICS

Food safety is all about handling, preparation and storage of food in ways that prevent food

borne illness. This includes a few steps to be followed to avoid potentially severe health hazards.Improperly handled food can transmit diseases from person to person as well as serve as a growth medium for bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

Facilities like EFRAC will surely be helpful in fighting against the monstrous food safety issues like nutrition, hygiene, adulteration and quality of the food products.

Food adulteration is of grave concern to all the consumers everywhere.

• Mixing water in milk, synthetic milk• Harmful colours in cooking powder and spices• Animal fat in ghee• Arsenic, lead in water These are all ongoing problems faced by the consumers.

DIOxIN ANALYSIS

Dioxins are a family of toxic chemicals that share a similar chemical structure and a

common mechanism of toxic action. This family includes the polychlorinated dibenzo dioxins (PCDD’s), polychlorinated dibenzo furans (PCDF’s) and Polychlorinated biphenyls. Dioxins have been characterised by EPA as likely to be human carcinogenics and are anticipated to increase the risk of cancer at background levels of exposure.

Human ExposureHumans receive almost all of dioxin exposure from the food we eat, specifically from the animal fats associated with eating beef, pork, poultry, fish, milk and dairy products.

Level of ExposureThe US-EPA has set a limit of 0.00003 micrograms of dioxin per litre of drinking water. The Food & Drug Administration recommends not eating food with more than 50 parts per trillion of dioxins. All the developed countries are very much cautious about testing of dioxin along with other harmful pesticides and microbial parameters. Analysis of dioxin in PPT (parts per trillion) is very difficult as it requires highly skilled manpower and one of the most sophisticated and ultra modern instrument–HRGC-HRMS. EFRAC is one among the very few testing and R&D centres, who have the facility of analysing dioxins and furans in PPT levels.

EFRAC has designed the course module to enable students in such a way that they gather practical experience in handling, operating and maintaining the ultramodern, highly sophisticated and automated instruments, which are used for the high-end analysis in the field of chemical and biological science.

Apart from students, this training module will also be very beneficial for Quality and Food Safety professionals, scholars and faculty members in the above mentioned fields to upgrade and hone their analytical and R&D skills at par with current advancement in science and technology.

EFRAC provides training in the following areas

TRAINING FOR STUDENTS AND INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

Every year huge job opportunities are created in research organisations, commercial

laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, agrochemical industries, biotech companies and other allied industries. All these industries seek candidates having sufficient practical exposure to handle and operate high cost sophisticated instruments, since it is not viable and justified for colleges, institutes, research centres and other allied organisations to house all these high-end instrumentation infrastructure. Students therefore remain deprived of attaining the practical skill while undergoing their academic courses. Due to lack of adequate skills the students passing out from different scientific disciplines and seeking job opportunities in R&D and analytical sector find it difficult to get a berth in these industries.

Banking on capital and technological capability, Edward Food Research & Analysis Centre is

making inroads in the domain of research and development. A competent team of researchers is working towards development of methods, which can be applied for the betterment of society and environment. Our core R&D activities include.

• Development and validation of novel analytical methods for the analysis of organic pollutants in food, water and environmental sample.

• Dissipation study of different pesticides in soil and water in laboratory condition.

• Photo degradation of some selected pesticides and herbicides.

• Heavy metal contamination study in fruits, vegetables and milk.

• Shelf life studies of various packed and processed foods and allied products.

• New Product Development (NPD) like beverages (carbonated and non-carbonated), fruit juices, fruit concentrates/purees, functional foods, natural vegetable juices, dietary supplements etc.

• Crop science projects on the development of improved crop varieties/hybrids and seed production technology.

• Soil fertility studies concerning fertilisers and pesticides abuse.

• Pollutant studies in various types of water bodies.

Apart from the aforesaid R&D activities, we provide a platform to passionate and committed researchers/ scientists from various R&D institutes, universities and colleges to perform the advanced level research by using the sophisticated instruments. We collaborate to undertake joint research programs under PPP (Public Private Partnership) model.
