about: Develop the skills and confidence to create full figure portraits.

Moving on from purely facial portraits, students will look at the whole

body and will focus on how the human figure can be used through

gesture and expression to create wonderfully rich portraits and

paintings.

In Particular students will look at the artists from the Baroque period,

focussing on the work of artists such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Ribera,

Velasquez and more

The course will link into Edward’s current practice and preparation for

his solo show at next year’s BP Award at the National Portrait Gallery,

where he will be exhibiting a series of portraits based on the members

of LA’s Compton Cricket Club.

Prior to winning this year’s Travel Award Edward has completed a

number of high profile portraits including paintings of the Oscar

winning actress Glenda Jackson and Sir Paul Stephenson the former

Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.

session 1 and 2 – the foundations!

placement and composition

students will be taught about the proportions of the figure. Essentially where the head/torso/arms/legs are placed and spaced together

students will also be taught the principles of how to capture the figure on canvas

tonal painting

students will be shown how to construct a basic tonal painting in black and white acrylic or oil, recreating the human figure on canvas

session 3 and 4 – expression and feeling!

students will complete a detailed tonal portrait, focussing on grouping how to use highlights and shadows to create expression and meaning.

students will be taught about how the use of gesture and composition is used in painting to create expression and meaning.

session 5 and 6 - Final Painting

students will start a final image that will include a whole figure image.

This will be in full colour and students will be taught the basic principles of realistic colour work, including colour matching.

students will work with a limited colour palette

session 7 and 8 – Building up detail and expression

students will use a full colour palette to build up their previous work

students will focus on details and textures with in the face and body – I will bring in some examples of my work to illustrate this.

students will be show how to use glazes in colour painting

session 9 and 10 – getting things finished

using the skills that have been acquired over previous weeks, students will aim to complete their colour portrait

additional information

I am deeply passionate about Art History and feel that it is an essential

fuel in any artistic education. I would try to utilise at 5 minutes of every

session to show and talk about the paintings I love

For this particular course I would ask students to keep a sketch book

for any ideas or images that interest them. These can then be used or

referenced in the final painting.

palette, brushes, support for those wishing to learn canvas stretching,

students will be asked to bring, stretcher bars, canvas cloth, staples

and staple gun, primer, however you may also bring ready prepared or

bought canvas or board, pencils, thinners, turpentine for oils, water for

acrylic, medium, kitchen Roll
