One beautiful, sunny day in a colourful garden the sweet smell of roses wafts through the air. The sun beams down to where Edwina the earthworm lounges around in the warm leaf litter.

FACT: Earthworms do not have arms, legs or bones; they have soft bodies, covered in tiny hairs that help them to move. Worms breathe through their skin, which must be kept moist to enable them to absorb oxygen from the air.

FACT: Earthworms can grow up to fourteen inches long and are known to live for eight years. Earthworms eat decaying organic matter, which is made up of dead plants, plant waste and animal manure.

Edwina is still a baby earthworm. She lives with her mum, Elliza and her dad, Elliot. Her parents have been living in this wonderful garden for a very long time.

This little family lived on a beautiful cotton farm.

One disastrous, winter day Edwina’s grandparents were trying to warm up in the sun when a huge tractor suddenly passed by and her grandparents were squashed.

Tractors are an earthworms biggest enemy. Their huge tread pattern compacts the soil. The soil becomes hard and compacted and earthworms cannot survive.

Another enemy of the earthworm is the rotary hoe. It digs up the soil churning it around to loosen the hard clumps. Subsequently, destroying the home of earthworms.

Elliza, Elliot and Edwina had no choice but to move away from the cotton farm.

The little family travelled for days on end. Just as they were about to give up, they finally found an amazing garden on a sheep grazing property. There were no large pieces of machinery used on this peaceful land.

FACT: Most worms live in gardens and in other soiled areas such as fields and farms.
