Message from the Executive Director and Board Chair2017 was an incredible year for The Burlington Performing Arts Centre, and the process of collecting all of the various data and highlights for this Annual Report was an exciting task, as it allowed us to really see in black and white the many successes we enjoyed in 2017.
Financially, 2017 was a very positive year, which saw us eliminating 2016’s year-end deficit and closing out the year in a solid financial position. An in-depth audit of some of our most extensive areas of expense allowed us to identify opportunities for savings. As a not-for-profit, charitable organization we need to ensure that BPAC remains healthy, sustainable and dynamic.
Artistically speaking, 2017 was a resounding success. Many of Burlington’s favourite entertainers, as well as some new artists, from all artistic genres, graced our stages. Winter and spring saw Just For Laughs and Rick Mercer delight comedy-lovers; Home Free was a surprise sell-out for country music fans and Canadian rock-staple April Wine had the audience out of their seats. Our Fall 2017 line-up resulted in BPAC’s most successful season yet, with icons like Jann Arden, Gordon Lightfoot and The Barenaked Ladies bringing us our most robust audience numbers and ticket sales to date.
Community engagement was front and centre in 2017, as we celebrated our inaugural Festival of Trees. Canadian Tire, Burlington Stores and over 20 local businesses all generously supported the 5-week event, and over 10,000 members of the community enjoyed our festive, sparkling lobby full of Christmas Trees available to be won by raffle. This was a joint community fundraising initiative with the Arts & Culture Council of Burlington (ACCOB), and the funds raised will allow local artists and arts organization to access the Community Studio Theatre and share their talents with the community.
2017 saw BPAC strengthen its organizational capacity, while finding growth and promotional opportunities for a number of its key staff members. Mid-year saw a change in leadership, from Brian McCurdy to new Executive Director, Tammy Fox.
As you are aware, the organization has undergone numerous changes over its first seven years, and we are thrilled to report that it is now more resilient and more assured than ever before. There is an inspiring sense of purpose, an incredible team, a remarkable board, and a brand that is becoming recognized and renowned in the community for its commitment to the performing arts. For Tammy, it is incredibly satisfying to know that she is beginning her tenure here with the organization in the strongest place it has ever been.
